i have a problem like that too.. im making a cave section of a map and it goes smooth until .vvis. then it takes about 1/12 hours to compile the vis on a section that is only about 20ft. long. wth?? then i try to compile with fast vis. then i get this.

yeah i want just a regular non shiney wood floor and wall. but there is no other non-shiney textures like the one i have. :( oh!
since faces with shader properties will always look shiny unless you disable the feature in the display options.

i have a problem. i have my map and its sapose to be dark. right... i put a cubemap in to see what it would look like, and the floor/wall are shiney. i removed the cubemaps yet they are still shiney. how can i make it so i can have the cubemaps for models and some materials, but not others? or make the texture not shiney? or just plain old regular like it was before i put the env_cubemap in.?

ok just save your .vmf map files and textures etc. the uninstall steam."this is the only way" once you have finished. reinstall steam downloader from steampowered.com and reinstall your games/ tools. ps: never backup steam files when reformatting for virus reasons, steam doesnt like the different path names. just save the files you want then start again. believe me, ive had to do this many times. ;)

you are looking for env_message. if you really dont know what an entitie does. scroll down 1 by 1 in entitie properties, and click the help button. it will come up with a description of what it does, and what flags and inputs it can have.. hope this helps ;)
