in Random Mapping Questions Post #163263
The opaque flag doesn't block VIS I'm afraid. About your walls- how do you want to improve them? I find that layering brushes on top of one another, but avoiding them touching as much as possible, can make good-looking rock walls, and judicious use of the clip tool helps.

RE your r_speed question, you'll have to strike a balance between e- and w-polys. What are they on average in your map at the moment?

in Crazy clip brush Post #152534
Thanks Kasperg. I think I will just make them only partially sloped near the top, to stop the crates riding up them. And thanks for the ideas hazardous, unfortunately the crates are clipping into the walls already and it looks pretty bad, so I won't use the first one! And it's not vital enough to make me want to go messing with hull files... I'll just moderate my walls slightly. I should be posting the map I'm working on soon- look out for it. Thanks again.

in Crazy clip brush Post #152529
Is it possible to make a clip brush that will affect func_pushables, but not the player? The situation is that I have a func_water bordered with sloping walls. If I push the pushable against the walls and shoot them they sail up into the sky..., so I want a clip brush to give the walls a straight edge for the crates, but not for the player. To be honest I'm not sure if this one's fixable, but if anyone's got any ideas I'd be grateful. I like my sloping walls and don't want to get rid of them. I will supply the RMF if desired.

There isn't an 'on end touch' flag on the trigger_once, is there? And does anyone know the difference between the scripted_sequence flags? Also- Seventh, when would one want to trigger a trigger_once from another entity? Oh, and you said you'd remove the 3 from my name. :)

in A couple of easy Source q's. Post #128850
1) With a trigger_once or other brush trigger what is the difference between 'on start touch' and 'on trigger'?

2) With scripted_sequences, what exactly is the difference between 'no interruptions' and 'override ai'? I know that the latter has a stronger effect but what exactly is the difference?

BTW, I have a problem map in the vault if you fancy taking a look (other problems to these).

Can I use the steam/source hammer to map for HL1? I've installed HL1 and then put it into steam, but it doesn't show up in the games box when I start the SDK. Also, can I safely delete my standard HL installation now it's on steam?

OK, so you have a map layout for HL1 but can't be arsed/don't have time/are too noob to map it? Well, I never finish maps because I get bored of them or run out of ideas, so I'm offering my hammering services to anyone with a level plan! HL1 only please, I find Source editing difficult and the textures annoying. I also don't want years of messing about with Worldcraft/Hammer to be wasted! I eagerly await your plans. in Spawn npc_combine_s and make him rappel Post #125254
Make an npc_metropolice with 'waiting to rappel' and 'template NPC' checked. The latter flag also means that cop won't actually spawn. Give them a name too so you can trigger the rappel of the spawned grunt. Then use an npc_template_maker to spawn your grunt, with the 'template npc' field having the name of the template cop.

in Regenerating monsters? Post #120751
Make a block the size of the area the monsters will cover, and make it a trigger_hurt. Enter a negative damage value and on flags, check 'No clients' so it doesn't affect the player. Voila! A more elegant method would require coding, but that'll do the job.

Okay, I've got a trigger once targeting four metropolice to begin their rappel (and yes, the 'waiting to rappel' flag is checked) They are above a func_breakable_surf with the BreakOnTouch flag on, so it smashes when they hit it. But when I walk through my trigger_once, nothing happens. Any ideas? PS the func_breakable_surf's are at an angle, if that might have anything to do with it.

From the article: "You've done critical damage to the Citadel. The whole place is going to go up, taking out City 17 and what's in its immediate radius."

So what was the point of killing millions of people just to stop Breen escaping? It's not like Breen is cleverer than the Combine, he wouldn't be much of an asset. Seems a strange plan from the gman. And while Breen is going up towards the teleport he actually says: "Think of the people down below". (Okay, he probably would have said that anyway!) Gordon Freeman should have known better, what with his degree in theoretical physics.

in The Pope's Passing Post #102556
Jahzel, if you're saying that you were using his homosexuality as a point which contradicts his claims as a conservative christian, then I'm sorry for accusing you. :)

And Kasperg, it's not such a simple dichotomy of people either not doing anything the church says or doing everything the church says. The church's policy in Africa and other places will have caused deaths, because some people who don't take the church's advice on monogamous living (i.e. they sleep around) will take it's advice on the efficacy of condoms and not use them. People won't follow the church's ideals if they're not a part of that church, but by telling people condoms are ineffective in preventing the spread of HIV the church is making a scientific claim which will be accepted when there is no other information available, even if people are not christians themselves.

in The Pope's Passing Post #102351
I know full well the church didn't force people to abandon condoms, but they still spread misinformation which people have believed and contracted HIV as a result. The people who this affects the most do not have access to such a range of knowledge as ourselves. If you were in an African village and the only information available to about contraception was from the Roman Catholic church, and you suffered as a consequence, how would you feel? And as for your parachuting analogy, if we all practised abstinence in order to defeat HIV the human race would soon be extinct. Simple, huh?

in The Pope's Passing Post #102325
I'm not a Christian, and I don't know much about the pope. I was still slightly saddened to hear of his death, but no more than when I hear of people being blown up in Iraq or wherever else. He did some good things, no doubt. He was the first pope to appoint black archbishops, for example. But some of his ideas were just plain stupid, and someone in a position of power should be expected to research issues properly instead of being judgemental. To quote the director of Christian Aid:

"We were disappointed that he did not realise the Roman Catholic policy on condoms actually contributed to many deaths in the fight to control HIV/AIDS." Daleep Mukarji, 4th April

And Jahzel, why are you against one form of prejudice ("Arnold is a racist scumbag") but not another ("Arnold is a homosexual"). Perhaps it was just a flippant comment, but even so it doesn't help.

A few seconds after I joined a server it crashed back to the desktop with an error message (doubt it would help) and then steam started updating my steam client. It now thinks I don't have cstrike installed and offers to download it when I try to play. The game files are all there still. At a guess the problem is that it updated cstrike before the steam client instead of after. I'm not downloading it so can anyone help?

Well unless you installed HL2 to the directory C:hl then that is wrong. It should be $SteamUserDirhalf-life 2 where SteamuserDir is your steam username. I think you can only have water at one level, but I may be wrong! You could try compiling a map with water at two levels.

To fix the texture, you'll have to open the texture application tool from the left menu, select the offending texture and change it's rotation. This tool also has very useful commands such as centre the texture on the brush 'C' and fit the texture 'F'. Have a play around.
