a note on carving: it's a useful tool, but do NOT EVER carve with a cylinder! Every time I do that, I get leaks that are actually less than 1 unit wide!

I found a .bsp decompiler on the internet, but it does a shitty job. don't use them. (and then there's the legal issue)

But the beginning part, after you exit the train, wouldn't that make an awesome hldm map?

hl1 does get boring after a while, when you know where all of the monsters are. But, if you could get the original .rmf or .map files from valve, and make the entire hl1 into multiplayer...

remember the part in hl1 where you're crawling in a vent and suddenly there's a headcrab humping your face and you jump out of the chair screaming? that's what makes halflife great. And the puzzles.

in half-life 1 probs Post #134399
Just was wondering if anyone else has had issues with hl 1.0.0.9 or 1.1.1.0? Here's my problems:

-keyboard errors: the keyboard will "stick", and you'll be stuck running in some direction, and the mouse doesn't work
-random crashes when loading custom maps: even if zoner's tools don't report an error, sometimes hl will refuse to load my map and just exit (v1.1.1.0 only)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

in Water ain't Making Waves Post #134292
your water is a func_water, right? make sure the wave height is set to something, I think the default is 3.2? And if your grfx card isn't good enough, maybe the engine won't render "expensive" water at all.

in NEC flatscreen monitor help Post #134290
well, to fix it yourself, if the light tube is burned out, you'd need another identical one. If its a loose wire... you could do it yourself with a screwdriver (probably). I've only been inside a laptop lcd, but from that experience, if you crack it open, be VERY careful with any boards that are attached directly to the screen itself.

The light tube itself should be easy to find, probably on the side of the screen. In the laptop I trashed, there were two wires going to it that were plugged into a circuitboard. if those are loose, that could be your problem. Hope that I helped somehow.

edit: if you have the money, take it to a repair shop, because if they screw up, they're liable. if you screw up, you're out $100.

sounds like a backlight problem. You may have a bad tube, or a loose wire, or maybe i'm totally wrong. but a lcd for $100?!?

in Video Card or Gfx card? Post #132973
ive got a radeon igp 345m, very good grfx card, but its in a laptop so i don't know if there is a similar model for desktops. Anyway, if you're having trouble with hl2, could be
--processor speed
--front-side bus speed
--lack of memory
--slow hard drive (that's my problem)

After I beat halflife a few times (with cheats, I suck) I dl'd hammer 3.4, but had no idea how to use it. So I let it sit for about a year, and came back, and figured out how to use it, found twhl, and improved my mapping skills immensely.

Hey, when I got hl, i was running it on a 233 mhz p1 with about 48mb of ram and a 2mb video card. (I still have that computer!) but I bought a laptop, so I don't have to upgrade for a very long time. (I can't afford to anyway.) :(

in Half-Life vs. Half-Life 2 Post #132153
Good point. HL2 is pretty much linear rather than area-oriented.
I love hl2 for the graphics, physics, and new weapons. However, as BJ said, it is very linear, you never have a choice of where to go. And there are too many headcrabs. hl2dm is better, being quite intense if you get onto a server with lots of people. HL1 had way better puzzles, though.

right now, gas/electric hybrids (the slightly older ones ) are the "car of the future". They get like up to 80mpg, and are Way more efficient than the electric cars, because the technology is still so new, and batteries suck! drains laptop battery in 1.2 hours :(
