in Graphics or Performance, Your thoughts! Post #163215
I think that if I had to decide which is better, I would choose Performance. Take the XBOX 360 for instance: It has obscenely good graphics, but not one of the games released has made me want to get a 360 :. If you take a game like Counter Strike 1.6 Versus Counter Strike: Source. The major fan-base is for 1.6 simply because it is more fun. I got Source, and played it for about a week, and then went back to 1.6, becasue source doesn't have the same good feeling.
I agree with D_man HL2 would be nothing without its great graphics, but the performace is truly what counts.
I take if from a mapping perspective: I first think about my layout, and whether the map will be fun to play before I add the bells and whistles. Not everyone maps this way of course, that is why most custom Source maps have crappy gameplay, people get too caught up in making them look pretty or realistic.
I think I've said enough. Hope this helps your paper rimmy.

Edit: Just thought I would add that Games like PacMan, Donkey Kong, Mega Man and Super Mario Bros. are still fun even though they run on an 8-bit system. That shows that graphics aren't the sole decider in the quality of games.

The purpose of the thread wasn't "Do you like Myspace or not." It was Mustang making a suggestion that there be a Myspace group for TWHL. I answered, and that should have been it. We already had a tread discussing what we like and dislike about myspace Here, no need to repeat history.

I don't get it, why bother posting if the content you post has no positive purpose? The thread will be closed soon enough, don't waste you time, you aren't proving anything telling us that you dislike myspace. Find something better to do.

Im going to try and get my Megaman map finished up in time, I think it would be a nice addition to your server Muzz. Im about 25% done now, I've made the base for 3/8 of the megaman bosses. I'm worried about the gameplay though, it is hard to translate a 2-D side-scroller into a 3-D FPS
All I can do is hope for the best that it comes out all right.

I know there was no longjump module, but in almost every Speed run I've seen they Bunny hop and strafe to gain speed. I saw you moving the African American Scientist, and I just thought I would mention that it could have been done faster - As I have seen in other speed runs, but good job none-the-less.

yeah, Microsoft would update. That company is full of Money-grubbing theives! Also, they would need to adjust for current technology changes, AKA Windows XP 64 bit edition, and Windows Vista with 64 processing supported. but I understand and support your stance entirely. What is hacking other than de-bugging?

in Virus making, why? Post #161342
Heh, my theory is that Norton, and Symantec, and McCaffe ((sp) I know), and the other Anti-Virus producers are the ones creating the viruses. Ihink about it, they come up with a solution reletively quickly to most new threats, at the cost of a $30 upgrade on your virus protection package =S. I think finding and exploiting flaws is fun, not to be malicious, but fun. Also creating something like a virus or a hack is thrilling, because you have the knowlege that you have outsmarted the programmer of a specific application, or defied which was previously thought of impossible. thats what I think.

I Play CS more than I map now-a-days. If I have no inspiration, i dont force myself to map. I rarely have inspiration as you can see from my map vault. Also, playing CS takes no thinking, mapping does. Sometimes after a long day of work, I dont want to think, I want mindless fun.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I agree - 1.6 is way more fun than source. Source just doesn't have the same fun feel 1.6 did, and also, tons of servers use bots now, so you are never sure when you are going to be playing against real people

in Free Alienware pc? - say it ain't so Post #160566
Woo, Go Seventh!! IMO, Make your own computer. In the end, the result is much more satisfying, and you do save money. In IRC, I picked out parts that totalled a little under $800 for a computer Alienware would charge well over $2000 for. (With m0p's and Seventh's help of course). As for everyone here who hates m0p's computer "knowability," you don't know sh*t, this man is very knowlegable when it comes to computers. Final point - Alienware charges for assembly and the case, everything else is another company's part. There is no reason for it to cost double!

in Abandoning a map, have you done it? Post #159244
I have about 20-30 crappy maps in my maps folder that are unfinished, or horribly made. I have released 3 maps.. that is 1 out of 10 maps released.. ick. Use older maps for inspiration. Most of the unfinished maps are just illustrating some neat effet or structure, but have no real gameplay or variation. I never force myself to finish something, because odds are if I dont want to work on it, people wont want to play it..

in Compile log freeze and LONG compile. Post #158302
Don't remove Brushes touching the void, remove entities touching the void. Brushes can touch the void, otherwise it is a skybox
Also, players can touch the skywall, but it doesn't look very realistic when the player can just walk up to the invisible wall and look out and see sky.

The tutorial is called "The Displacement Method" It is half way down the 4th or 5th journal entry.

in Compile log freeze and LONG compile. Post #158298
Well, one thing I should mention is that it isnt a great idea to just have a wall of sky near the ground right where the player can just walk up to. Also, no entities can touch the void, so if any of your buildings are a func_wall then they will appear to be a leak. If you actually do just have a leak, look at my profile, I made a tutorial on seeking out leaks.

Oh, lol you skyboxed! that is why VIS and RAD are taking a long time! yeah, just get rid of the skybox, and close off any areas that can see the void with the sky texture. If you want to take it a step further, apple the "Null" texture to any unseen faces, which will give the game less faces to render. :) hope it works.

Its prolly not frozen, It is prolly on the VIS stage of compile, which takes a while depending on how you made the map. CSG and BSP run very quickly, then VIS and RAD take 30x longer. How long do you wait after it "Freezes" to scroll around. I usually dont touch my computer while compiling, because it will give the illusion of freezing. All I can say about long compile times is stick to simple mapping, and dont get too messy. you will always have a long time compiling RAD if you have a lot of lighting, there is no avoiding that.

I honestly don't fear too much. I feel like, if it is going to happen to me, and there is nothing I can do about it, why worry. I do sometimes fear failure, or inadequacy. I don't like getting bad grades in school, or making customers wait too long. But as I said before; If I can help it, I will try, if not, there is no point getting upset.

Err tips.. hmm stick to a larger grid-size when you first start using VM, it makes things less messy. If you aren't familiar to VM, maybe spheres aren't the best choice. Pepper has a nice example map concerning spheres if you wanna check that out to get some pointers. Other than that, the only advice I can give is practice practice practice. At first VM is confusing, but once you get used to it, it is very powerful.
