You know, after thinking it over, all I want for Christmas is this, so I can start borking up Half-Life and any other games I come across.

Well, it's never too late to learn a little C++. I'm planning on upping my programming skills from BASIC to C. It'll be a big jump, but I feel it's worth it since I'm going to need the experience in the career I plan on heading into.

But you aren't supposed to buy things yourself on Christmas, then you look like a selfish peice of crap.
You don't get it. I'm saying that everything I request for Christmas, I can afford (as in cash) to buy myself. I'm not saying I'm just going to buy stuff for myself this Christmas.

This. And in searching for that, I found this. Don't do drugs or you'll get nuked.

But seriously, everything I want for Christmas I can buy myself. Besides, I'm going to have to get a job soon so I'll have no time for fun.

Anyway, yeah, that second splash was worse than the first. Maybe get a behind-the-shoulder shot of gordon blasting aliens/soliders on the Alise, or something.

And you can get Photoshop Elements for only $60. If you don't want to waste money, everyone suggests GIMP, but the interface looks far too cluttered for me.

I'm working on the second version of my origional map, with better architecture and a little more humor. Unfortunatly, I don't have a screenshot now because a screeshot wouldn't do my map justice at this point.

Just so I don't forget, I've got a better idea than my first one:
  • Contest Name: "We're In The Funny" (or something less lame)
In this contest the mapper tries to create the funniest map he can, with inside jokes, sight gags, and whatever he can fit. Tasteful humor only, though.

Heck, I've got so many ideas...maybe I'll host my own contest...

Idea: Dream Sequence (or you could call it "Alternate Dimention" or, heck, even "Acid Trip")

The object is to make a map as strange as you can, like a dream (or nightmare.) Things popping out of walls, floating around in space, scale of rooms all out of proportion, stuff like that. Basically, the goal is to make a map that makes the player go "WTF?"

I personally think this is easy because the mapper can do whatever the heck he wants, although HL's limitations come to mind...

in Ghosts Post #147665
As far as I'm concerned, people hunting for EVP use one of those handheld recorders, then plug it into a computer and use something like Sound Forge to edit it. Also, whether or not you find something, I believe, depends on how hopeful and encouraged you are. Because the more interested you are, the more you're bound to think you've found EVP where there isn't any.

Heh...I remember when I was obsessed about ghosts...must've been in 10th grade. A couple young friends and I went on a "ghost hunt," but of course we found nothing. During that time I was carrying my big radio with me to look for EVP. Lot of good that did.

in Ghosts Post #147658
madcow: That urban legends thing is interesting, but some of that stuff seemed fake to me. Although I recognize some of the EVP from some show about ghosts I watched. The "I'd love to find me stone" one was taken by a group investigating a cemetary at night, which, as far as I'm concerned, is illegal.

Why don't you give it a try, create a map that you think is good fun and ask some others for feedback? Best way to find out.
I'm actually trying to do that with the remake of my first map. No combat, just the funny (although there is some humor in my first map)...for now, anyway. I just wanted to ask so I don't go overboard in my next real map.

I'm not talking about sexual humor, but like crazy humor and site gags. For example, you see a sign on the wall that says "Have a problem with excess saliva? No more with Salivaway!" or a note on a door: "Frank, stop leaving your Philly cheesesteaks on my office chair. I keep sitting on them and soiling my lab coat. People keep asking if I have a bad case of diarrhea! - Paul" Heck, even seeing a sci playing his armpit. Stuff like that.

Yeah. I've already done that with the remake of Mappy, but I believe it's also a good idea to, instead of drawing the basic layout of the map, draw concept art of the inside of the rooms so you know what's going to be in there BEFORE you map it. It'll save you a lot of time.
