Keep in mind you can't use the decal tool with normal texts. Thats when you get the Can't find decal "xxxxx" console error.

If you have a model, for example the scientist model, you need to extract them all to the same directory (as in, sci, sci01, sci02, etc.) and only load the scientist.mdl. Same goes for models with modelname.mdl and modelnamet.mdl.

But we just had a HL2 compo, if you do that, then every compo should be HL1 and HL2. Not just every once and a while. Because us HL1 mappers have to wait it out when theres a hl2 compo, but when theres an HL1 compo, then Source maps are allowed. Doesn't make any sense. It's not fair.
Agreed. Let those damn Source mappers wait this one out, anything submitted for HL2 is going to automatically look 10x better than HL1, and will most likely affect the judging in some way or another, no matter how funny the entries are.

Never use sprites for trees. Have you played They Hunger?

To make the boundaries, I suggest using tree models in addition to a masked tree texture for the actual wall. Just don't copy + paste all the trees without at least rotating them or something, it looks like shit when you have a forest full of identical trees.

Animated texts can only be 10 frames...I usually animate it in PS as a gif and then save the individual frames as bmp's.

Its quite easy.

New>Wad (WAD3 format)>Drag texts into the sidebar, and save. Add to Hammer.

Done. Make sure the dimensions of ALL texts are multiples of 16 (and BMPs).

Also, yes, that is all of them, but you don't need to include them in your map since everyone with the game has them.

You can use trigger_cameras. It'll look good, but won't be player controlled. Tutorial

Or, you could use a brush Osprey (find it at the Gamedesign.net prefabs collection) and have it hover in one place, with a rope on the outside that is a func_ladder that the player could climb down. You could also make it a func_train and trigger it to fly away when you get to the bottom. Wouldn't actually be that hard.
