Thanks Archie, that seems to have done the trick. Using Sledge to export it directly as a RMF file, it's loading in Hammer just fine.

With that said, I'll look at using Sledge since it was really new around when I left mapping and it seems to have come a long way.

It's new for me, perhaps because of Windows 10? Who knows.

I've added the MAP extension and Hammer doesn't complain, but still loads an empty map.

I've loaded the map in CRAFTY and it works fine, all the brushes are there. So it's just Hammer being an asshat.

A post where I need to ask for help, I never thought it would happen this late in the game.

So I'm having a problem where Hammer is not saving my map file with an RMF extension unless I specifically add it when saving for the first time. The problem is that I was working on a map for 5 hours and forgot to do this. It's been saving it, just as the file with no extension.

So now when I load the map, it's completely blank. I changed the file to the RMF extension and Hammer throws this error: SerializeRMF()v2.2 tried to load a file v0.0 Aborting

Can someone save my map, or am I gonna be starting again?

EDIT: I can open the file in Wordpad and all the data is there. So the File HAS map data, just Hammer is having a hissy fit.

I don't think you've looked at the examples of 'fair use' correctly or the court cases to date, nor do you seem to understand how a business or how courts works.

First up:
Bungie gave them all the contents of Halo Reach before the game was even out so they could use it in their machinimation.
I still don't understand why you keep saying this since Halo Reach came out three years after the first Red vs Blue episode, and Bungie wished them well after the second episode and supported them with bug fixes and features since Halo 2, which is much earlier than Reach.
I would be interested in how the secretary who knows nothing about what is in production would respond.
This was a dumb comment on your part. If you know anything about business, then you'd know that secretaries filter emails and then forward emails to the relevant persons. The only emails that a secretary would respond to are emails regarding the positions they are fulfilling, for example, a secretary to the CEO would respond to emails about organising meetings for said CEO, ect.
If Riot tried to sue Machinima it’s not as simple as “bam, lawsuit.” That would be passing the entire courtcase...
I have no idea what you were thinking here. To clarify, the definition of a Lawsuit is a case in a court of law involving a claim, complaint, etc., by one party against another; suit at law. How you can say that it's passing an entire courtcase, when it is one.

I am fully aware of the 'four factors' and how the US interprets 'Fair Use', in fact Australia's equivalent of 'Fair Dealing' is even more relaxed than the US. I have more freedom here in regards to 'fair use' than you do in the US. I've learnt a great deal of this myself in the past few years, but even Wikipedia covers this very well.

For example, "[US] Courts have been more willing to grant fair use protections to parodies than to satires" - Wikipedia. Red vs Blue has been considered a parody, but not of the original work which is Halo, but of other topics such as games, military life, and science fiction films. Therefore, had Red vs Blue gone to court, the copyright laws were leaning against them in regards to 'Fair Use'. They may have possibly won the court case, but it never got that far, so we don't know.

Basing your argument on Fair use, while plausible, is also very risky, as a court's interpretation can vary wildly from judge to judge.

In Australia however, fair use also includes satires, so I could easily create a LoL Machinima in the League of Legends game without too much worry.

Now we get into the nitty gritty of the problem. If you were doing all this in the LoL game, then there wouldn't be a problem, nor would we be having this discussion. But you want someone to export models from LoL and transform them into Source models, with payment.

You've admitted that this is Freelance work and therefore this is effectively making money off someone else's work, without alteration. Because the work involved is almost a complete copy, and I am making money off it, Fair Use is not an adequate excuse. This is because I am not using them in any production, rather I am just porting them to another format for money and distributing them. It may not be public distribution, but it's distribution nonetheless. Unless I was an employee of the company that is using the works, then any admittance of me performing the job would highly likely see me end up in court with the real possibility of facing prison time.

As Zeeba said, if you were to hire someone to build models from scratch that were not "substantially similar", then you'd be much better off.

I really don't like arguing this point, and I would like to see you get on with your work, but I also don't want to see someone facing fines or prison time for a job that could be done the right way.

Prison is not a fun place.

From your response, I have determined that you, in fact, have NOT made contact with Riot Games, they have NOT given you explicit permission to use their assets which in turn is the exception to the EULA that would make your request legal.

I have sent an email to Riot Games, hopefully they will respond and that will clear this mess up. Took me 5 minutes to send an email, yet you've spent days to write replies on forums.

Also, with your reference to Red vs Blue, I've watched their 'Behind the Scenes' videos. They did not have permission to use Halo assets, then, when they saw that their video was receiving traffic from Microsoft and Bungie, they were shitting themselves because they could have taken legal action.

They got lucky, and Microsoft and Bungie liked it.

What you are asking is not a case of 'Can they sue us?', because they can. It is a case of 'If they sue us?'. Ultimately, yes, they may like your series and let it slide, but if they don't, they can and will sue you or issue you with a 'Cease and Desist'.

I live in Australia. In accordance with Australia's Copyright Act 1968 which was required to be amended when Australia signed the Free Trade Agreement in 2006, if I took and completed this job for you and Riot undertook legal proceedings against you. I would be vulnerable as a freelancer and I would be subject to hefty fines of up to $20,000 and possible prison time.

You make a few promises there in regards to this. You claim to keep me anonymous, but if a court orders you to tell them who did it, you'll have to either say you did (and you'll face the fines and imprisonment) or I did, hence dobbing me in anyway. If you don't, you'll be held in contempt and face additional charges. You've promised that Machinima will protect me, but unless I sign a binding contract with Machinima, I only have your word for this. I'm not saying they'll break their promise, but you're asking me to trust a complete stranger who is not a representative for their company.

I am well versed in Australian Law, it is a huge part of my job that I must always operate with the legal boundaries set by my Government. We have more red tape than most other industries and I am even required to undertake many training sessions regarding said legal boundaries every year.

In any case, I have sent an email to Riot Games. I have also sent an email to Machinima to confirm that they have actually authorized this, since it is them who have a 'positive relationship' with Riot and not you.

I'll be back in a few days, I'll update when I can.

As Penguinboy said by quoting the 'EULA' from LoL, you may not do this without permission, period. If you have permission, prove it and then you might get someone.

If I were to send an email to Riot simply asking:

"Machinima are searching for a freelancer to port models from League of Legends into the Source engine for use in a Machinima series. Have you given them express permission to do so?"

Will they say Yes or No? It is a simple question that requires a one word answer and nothing more.

If you're worrying about Steam using resources, then you need a better computer.

@2muchvideogames
So it's broken at the moment, which nobody has given them much time to fix I might add. It's a huge jump to work on a completely different operating system, especially one as alternative as Linux, you probably didn't notice the problems they had with Macs for the first few weeks? Did you?

What's more, that doesn't really answer my question as to why WON is better than Steam? I'm still unconvinced that they are any different.

EDIT: Just updated everything and all my mods seemed to work fine, except for Sven-Coop, which has been broken for me since last year.

Actually, Urby, I believe the transparency will still work on WON HL, seeming as how the only thing that was updated was the hw.dll and sw.dll, so quite literally, you could just drop those in and they would work just fine as far as I know.
Actually, model transparancy was one of the last updates they did for WON, then the last patch came only with Steam and was never made for WON. From my experience, having just installed WON Half-Life for my brother who doesn't have internet at my parents house, WON has problems. Most of the mods I've made just crash WON Half-Life to desktop when you try and play them, but not on Steam Half-Life.

I honestly see no difference in either version of Half-Life and nobody here has really explained why WON Half-Life is better than Steam Half-Life. So feel free to explain why you think this.

Thanks

in Complete bullshit new law passed in US Post #311776
I'm just infuriated that this worthless and ultimately useless discussion came up again for about the third or so time this year.

1. Gun Lobbyists have and will continue to call for more guns so that everyone can protect themselves. Sure, this might help, but are you sure?

2. Anti-gun Lobbyists still asking for tighter gun laws or the banning of guns altogether. Won't fix the problem, because it just pushes the market underground and then there is no control at all.

3. America fucked themselves up royally, by putting in 'laws' to band-aid the problem because of a Constitutional right that people have taken out of context for their own gain. When they wrote that 2nd amendment they still had some belief in the decency of humanity, bless their souls, the arrogance of people however continue to spit on their graves.

As far as I'm concerned, its America's problem and they should buck up and fix it 'cause I don't give a fuck. Maybe if they all got together they might have a brain between them and realise the rest of the world isn't so 'backwards'.

True freedom does not equal liberty, it is called anarchy.

Now, for the love of all things fucking sane, can we return to what this post is actually about. I'm sick of hearing about America's bullshit, and I'm definatley sick of hearing about the same bullshit over and over. It's a country of fucking lunatics that's gonna get us all killed.

Like that crazy cousin who likes messing with fire. We've all got one...

I will admit, it is a bit skewed towards religeon than science. If you're really interested in this sort of thing, go for the slightly more scientificically approached area of Quantum Mechanics. I will admit that even though Quantum mechanics has lots of holes, it also makes a few interesting points.

Emotions do not alter our reality. Emotions alter our perception of reality which in turn alters how we react to reality and our actions alter our reality and the reality of others. Reality only exists when we perceive it, if we aren't perceiving it then, to us, there are infinite possibilities to that reality and when we return to perceiving it, our mind fills in the gap with the best approximation we can acheive.

It a frustrating topic and definately not solid science, but I think it's an interesting theory.

Watch a movie called "What the Bleep Do We Know". It's a very good (and somewhat enteraining for a doco) crash course in Quantum Mechanics, but like they say at the beginning of the movie: Your interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, or any similar theory, is determined by how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.

in Steam: Big Picture Post #311332
I've been using it since the Beta came out about 5 months ago. Bought myself an ASUS WAVI to transmit HDMI to my big tv in the lounge room so I never have to move the computer to play, I just plug in the HDMI cable and I've got my computer setting everything automatically.

I really like Big Picture as some games are just meant for the couch and controller. I played Tomb Raider Anniversary, Sideway, Super Meat Boy, Super Crate Box, Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD and Shank with great funness. I even played a bit of CS:GO but I still prefer my FPS with keyboard/mouse.

The interface is quite sleek when you get used to it but I keep a Keyboard and Mouse handy just in case the game crashes because otherwise you're stuck when the controller can't do anything.

The web browsing interface I found is difficult to use and while the text input method is interesting (not sure if it's unique though) it takes practice to get the hang of but could make quick typing once you get the knack of it.

You also need the graphics to actually play on an HDTV at full resolution. For most people this won't be an issue or you can just play on a smaller TV, but for the big screen enthusiasts you need a card that can handle 1080i (lucky for me my card was designed for that. Yay!)

Overall, while I don't use it a lot as my girlfriend disapproves of me using both the computer and tv at the same time, it is a really good idea and I like that Valve is trying to break into the console market without costing us anything.

Awesome :D

Sat down last night and played Spec Ops: The Line in one sitting. It took 5 hours or so and I was up late, but it was the perfect way to play. By the end of the game, I was tired, stressed and feeling just a bit numb and mindfucked.

Despite the sub-par gameplay mechanics, the story really hit hard in places and some less-than-appealing images are uncomfortably burned into my brain. By the end of it, I felt just as shit as the main character, but still couldn't bring myself to put it down.

I would have enjoyed it more if it had a solid shooting system. Guns felt light with no kick and AI was passable without making me rage too often. It was nice to not have loading screen between chapters, except when you die, then you feel like you're waiting forever (30-60 second loading screens on the PS3).

Spec Ops: The Line. If I never play this game again, it will be too soon. But I'm glad I did.

Also, WarZ on the 15th October! Yay! I love DayZ but I can't stand the engine. I'm looking forward to next week.
