in :Map idea: Quadrilateral Post #166832
Straght down to business; I dont have my main comp up and running at the moment but I am considering downloading World Craft onto this comp to do this map.

The idea is very simple; I make four large hollow blocks and connect them at the top and bottom of them. Then I cut the map into four and send 1 peice to each person who wants to sign up (I need 3 people to sign, 4 maps parts and I am making one).

The simple idea is that you have to map what ever you like to connect the two ways in and out of your quater, then when they are all done I connect all the maps and bingo, we have a very quick and simple community single player map.

I have a few thoughts to put to you; Should we make this for Opposing Force (My preference because it has more things we could use) or HL1.

Each quater of the map will have a theme, be it fire, water or whatever, you choose (if you sign up and get accepted as one of the lucky 3). The enemies in your map must fit your theme, I dont want this to turn into one big grunt fest. EG if you use water your monsters should be water orientated (Itch, barnicle, bullsquid etc.) Fire and fire monsters (Controllers, gargs etc.) Of course you can use other monsters, but you should try and stick to the theme.

So; what I need to know.
  • What do you guys think?
  • Is this worth doing IYO?
  • Would you sign up?
  • And finally if I do do this, should it be HL1 or Opposing Force?
Personally I think we should do it in Opposing Force, because there are more monsters and entities to put to use.

However, what happened to Skyline City? Dont start this until you have finished that.

The story sounds original and if you pull it off correctly, it could be awesome.

I have completed HL2 4 times to date, first on medium, then hard twice, and then on easy (for the lol factor). I have played through singlular chapters a few times aswell.

looks good, too many walls though IMO, usuallyt if somone has a pretty garden they want to show it off not wall it off. If you removed the walls that are in line with the front of that house, perhaps replace them with some decent cover. Because you have somones front door their, and then bam a big wall blocking the view. At least get rid of the one wall closest to the front door of thse house, so they can look straight out onto the circle of flowers.

Have you considered making a tube with a respawning explosive barrle in it, when you press a button a very fast piston moves foward and projects it, the impact on the target should detonate it.

Looks good, dont be too put off by what people say about your map, if you envisioned it that way, then make it that way. Personally I think that texture job is good, and if you added a door frame like construct (perhaps like a wooden ivy growing thing?) around those holes in the walls it might look good. I think it looks great as it is though.

Are you going to put more greenery and dirt in the areas that have a trim around them? The ones that are backed onto the walls.

Great job, cant wait to see it.

I won! AWESOME!

Unfortunatly I cant come on for a few days (weeks? D:) Because my computer's CPU is fried. I can however supply you all with a new theme;

Now, I cant supply a picture but, you have to come up with a funny dipiction of the recent massive robbery that happened here in the UK. they estimate 40 million pounds in cash, was stolen. To put this into perspective, if it were all in ?50 notes it would be the size of the bottom half of a two story house.

The job is to create a funny caption or dipiction of how the robbers got away with all that cash, or just anything funny about it. For more details (and possible photo shopable pictures) check out the news article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/4743638.stm

Pay attention to the "Millitary prescision" part, some comical CSS pictures may come out of this (just a suggestion). Ready? GO!

No I wasnt doing anything wrong. These hand held radios come with 9 "channels" and I bought them in a local Computer Shop. They only have a 3 km radious (apx 1.8 miles), lots of people use them, its just that the coast gaurd monitor all frequencies and of course if somone starts saying stuff like that on them, they are bound to respond.

Luke: Its not big and its not clever.

Yeah true, or triangulate my position. But they wont be able to "pin point" where I am. They could probably figure the area I live in but then, I didnt do anything wrong so I doubt they will bother.

I am using a 17" normal monitor, why would you want an LCD? They have less detail and if you look at them from the sides the colours look all screwy. It like buying an electric tooth brush, what was so wrong with a normal one?

in YOU GUYS WILL NEVER BELIVE THIS! Post #163683
Funny story, but how could you possibly think that they would send a rescue party when you were in your house? On the ground...
Because I live near the coast? They cant pin point the signal without it being on for a long time and without the proper equiptment setup. Think about it your sat in a control room and then on the radio you hear "All hands abandon ship, abandon ship!" What would you think?

They didnt have time to track the location of the signal, that would require at the very least triangulation and the radio only has a 3 km range. Not much chance of their being 3 recivers within 3km of each other.

J.C: When a womans TV Cable box screwed up they lauched boats all over the shop to try and find the source of the signal, they searched for hours before realising it was land based.

Crazy.

There've been a couple of instances of Freeview (UK non-subscription digital TV) decoder boxes broadcasting naval distress signals recently.

I'm sure they heard the second transmission, anyway. Are you sure it was the coastguard, and not just somebody else using the same CB frequency?
Yeah, and that happened in MY TOWN aswell, I doubt they will be to impressed with my stunt after that.

EDIT: heres the sound file I recorded, this is what my computer recorded from the transmission. http://www.websamba.com/tycell/Sinking.zip

I was in my house recording sound FX over my small hand held radios for a game concept I am working on. I put one radio by the microphone of my computer and take the other into another room to record the sound.

One of the sounds I was recording was "All hands abandon ship, abandon ship." so I said this over my radio and THE FUCKING COAST GARUD ANSWERED!!!1

I am shitting myself, what if they launch a rescue party or somthing!! I didnt make out anything they said but I send a message a few moments later saying "Err, this is the person who sent the last transmission on this frequency, just to say there is no emergancy I am recording sound FX onto my computer, again there is no emergancy, sorry for the inconvienance."

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCK!!! I am shitting myself now! What if they do lauch search parties!?

Performance above all else. Look at FFVII, its graphics are old but the performance is perfect and people still play it. Now look at Doom3... uh-huh.

Perfomace, as is stated, is a must have. Graphics can vary, so long as its still playable and easy enough to see what everything is or is ment to be, graphics dont matter. Performance on the other hand does. Ever tried to play a RTS with lag? Or a CSS with lag? Makes you quit.
