Yep, didn't have enough time to finish the xen enviorment, plus I'm hooked on a new game... and not all my life is computer. Bye bye, I'm going to do something that hasn't got to do with the computer.

what I meant was, no train, just a track, and platform, walls, and a ceiling.

Still 2 hours left!

'Submitting soon... just finishing up, and Hopefully Garg is just finishing up too ;)

Unby: lol I thought you said "transition" error!

edit:VOX if you don't enter this one, you are banned from here forward on all mini compos!! (just kidding, but c'mon seriously :P)

In.

I didn't/couldn't spend much time on this, and the little time I did was "eaten up" by my problem of getting the elevator doors to move with the elevator--I wanted to do one without paths and a train, but rather func_doors and some render/mm trickery.

I wanted to incorporate this music for the elevator ride, but alas, I never go to it. ^_^

The map is in the "Problems" section, so if you can help me figure the problem, I'd be greatly appreciative!

Mini#7 brief will be up shortly.

Mini#7 - Build-A-Refrigerator Brief Page

Looking for a judge for this one, and as always, ideas for the next one!

VOX/Elon/M_Garg/Muzz: You all are now banned from participating in the minicompos. You always say you'll join, but never do!!1

If you're banned, then It'll be impossible to get my hopes up any more :P! (of course I'm kidding, but c'mon WTF guys!)

It really is ok... I understand not finising stuff--I'm the master of procrastination--, but it would be so much more fun with more people!

LOL ROWLY, I WANT that song. We played it as part of the Jazz Band's performance at the Spring Concert for my school this year. PERFECT for an elevator!
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-04 21:51:48 UTC Post #192510
I've said I'd enter 2!

and ran out of time on both. 3 days boils down to a few hours at most for those of us working folk. and I always think far to grand to do anything in a matter of hours.

but, I do have this nice, grand, half finished elevator that I will release as a short mini mod after I expand on some parts.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-04 23:50:36 UTC Post #192512
Rowley, your compotitions are too short, I have a half finished elevator and a xen cave. I wont expend it though.

I agree rowleybob, even though it was a joke, I ban myself from your compotitions. I hate being stressed because of some stupid deadline. I like mapping in the speed I choose and when I like. Having such a short time demands that the mapper will spend all his day on the map and map as quickly as possible.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-05 00:17:26 UTC Post #192515
Fine ban me I can't do one until I take a few days off from work anyway! I'll just come up with ideas and approve them :D

minicompos: Don't be remiss in entering just becuase you entry isn't perfect, or even finished! You guys are all very talented mappers, and I'm guessing your unfinished work would beat out many people's complete stuff :P

Anyway, after the dismal turnouts of just about every compo since the first one, #7 will probably be the last one that I'm going to have anything to do with.

It was a lot of fun and notice we've absolutely dwarfed--almost doubled--the size of the Source compo!--though maybe we're just good spammers :P!

Perhaps somebody should start a new "mini" thread that foucuses on modelling, texturing, or lighting only. I think many of us could use an exuse for practice in these areas :)

Sombody suggested an idea for a minicompo to reproduce Source effects in HL, which in itself would be good for tons of minis focusing only on doing that.

Elon: I could give you 100 days to compete, and you'd still come up with an excuse to not finish ;) (And so would I--And I often do :))

Hopefully someone will initiate new minicompos, focusing on some other aspect of mapping, and pimp them better--so more people will join.

I'd like to take this time to thank everyone who contributed, and even those who feigned interest in participating :P

No wonder it died away! It started out nicely, with the mini city, that it's deadline was a week long. Afterward it just turned into redicules compos that has a very short deadline. So short that you can't do anything bigger then one room.

I did work hard on the elevator compo, unbreakable can tell you that, but I couldn't finish it in time. I wouldn't find any excuse not to finish it in time if the deadline was a week long. I loved that map and worked hard on it.

lol, it was dead before the refrigerator compo :P

Maybe 3 days is too short, but I'm betting it wouldn't have made much of a difference if it was bumped to 5 or 7 days.

People are bascially lazy and unmotivated--myself included. I mean, Look at the regular compos...people have over a month to complete those, and what is the average showing?...5-7 entries?...maybe a few more.

Anyway Can someone with mod powers please unsticky and close this thread?... 'Tis over ;)

We still have to wait for the Compo results to come in and a new HL Compo to begin; why not entertain ourself during that period?

On the note of time limit, I think we really can't get worked up over that. This is the 1st MiniCompo Thread that, to my knowlege, TWHL has ever had, and as such, there are going to be mistakes and failures. Lets not let it ruin the thread?

Apparently, time limits are too short; simply lengthen them; and we really need to put our heads together and think of some really awesome ideas. We could map a short cutscene or somthing like that with lots of explosions and such. Dont let thinking in only terms of bare-bone 'brushes' hinder your creative ideas! :P

Perhaps we will start a new thread that utilizes the use of terrain or astounding lighting. It's all up to you guys, so lets keep this awesome idea going.

I agree with rotatorsplint, e little action movie or something would be cool, or lighting/terrain achievements
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-14 13:04:41 UTC Post #193408
So are we going to do somthing then? I have a good idea: Build, out of brushes, an airplane. It doesnt have to fly, make it explorable - By plane, I mean a passenger plane, or somthing of the sort, and give lots of detail. Custom content allowed, 1 week time limit.

Because I can't judge, if this idea is selected, we will have a vote on the judge; same protocol: make it clear that you want to be a judge, make it clear who you're voting for, you CAN'T vote for your self. If you're entering the compo, you can't judge (duh :) ).

This thread was an ingenious idea on RB's part, and I dont want to see it go down the drain like this. LETS MAKE SOME BRUSHES! YEAH.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-14 20:34:09 UTC Post #193443
I have less time to devote than I had when we first started this, and I'm actually working on a new, full-scale project atm, so I'm pulling myself out of the process for the most part.

Also--whilst trying hard not to sound too cynical--, after so many poor showings/total failures in terms of turnout, one can't help but feel a tad apathetic about the whole thing :(

If you want to keep it going, great!...nothing would make me happier than to see people participating in these ;)

@Rotor: You really need to get HL1 :P
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-14 22:30:22 UTC Post #193479
Yes... yes I do :| .

These failures, from what I have seen, were in large part due to the time limit. More time means better turn-out. Because there would be a week for this one, you, Rowly, may have a bit more time to work; and, judging from what I have seen you produce, you have a good chance of placing 1st :) . C'mon people, lets build stuff! Don't chicken out ;) !!

I think I just may use the elevator for HostageSituation.. :)

Oh and Elon.. you so should have entered that, even if it was just the rmf, it would have placed first.. definately

Thanks. :) I'll finish it soon as I'm finished with the tracktrain tutorial. I nearly finished it all now, only two more sections, the example map and I'm done.

My only problem with my elevator is that I'm not quite sure how it will look like, I thought on making it invisible but I'm not sure.

'BRUSHWORK MINI-COMPOS ARE BACK!!1

It's been a while, and I think this might be a good time to revive them. Too, since it will be two or three years 'till the next official compo, we may as well do something... OMG KIDDING, PLZ DUN SPITE ME!!!

Some refinements to the structure, which I think will help the turnout:

? No set time limits. When a predetermined number of compo entries are recieved, the compo will be judged, period.

As for the what the limit will be, I'll start it small--say 5 entries. On the day that I judge, if there are more than 5 entries submitted, the "extra" ones will make it into the judging.

?Sumission. Link to your entry in the thread, period.

? Awards. Besides the first, second, and third trophies, everyone who submits an entry gets a "mini-mark"--haven't decided on a real name yet--, a participatory commendation.

Think of it like hash marks on the side of a plane for getting kills or something... something small--say a tenth or so size of the normal award--to recognize effort, nothing more.
(Rimrook if your reading, I'd greatly appreciate a design for this)

? Judging. I haven't really worked out if we'll have revolving judges or If I will judge them all... we'll see.

? I'll have the final say for all compo ideas initially. Afterwhile, maybe we'll change it that the latest compo winner chooses the next compo.

First compo will be posted very soon. In the meantime, your thoughts?

It's okey, I'll facilitate the first few myself, and after that--hopefully--, they'll be more self-sustaining, as in I won't really have to do anything except watch and enjoy :)

In a perfect world, the winning dude will pick/judge and otherwise facilitate the subsequent compo, and so on, ad infinitum.

Once everyone is familiar with the process, we get all the kinks out, and of course if it's popular enough, it just may become reality :)

Gyah!!! We should include Source in this! Or I should come up with $15 and buy HL... Either will work.

I just had a killer idea and I can't make it because it's HL1 only :zonked:

Rotator, get HL1, and stop ruining our minicompos by trying to force your Source crap into it. It's impossible to have a fair compo when you include both engines, because one has a clear technological advantage over the other.

Sorry if that came off as a little harsh, but I'll blame it on our neighbors' screaming kids annoying me. :P

Habboi: Yeah, from a HL2 mod, here.

Rotor: Just get HL1 for great christ!!1 :) (Or facilitate a similar HL2 compo)

I'm not gonna start a Source thread because I was bitched at the last time I did it.

Srry, they can be judged sepparately you know. I mean, Source compos come almost never, and when they do, it's on a subject that I suck at. I just want to have a little fun. :tired:

I'll just come up with $15. There have gotta be some lawns around here that are in need of mowing in the dead of winter. :

I'll abstain from posting anything in this thread that is Source-related from now on, too.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 00:32:51 UTC Post #205440
It seems kinda foolish to revert to the old HL just to participate in a compo...

Why not let's try this:

If you want, Make it in Source and record a video or screenshots. Just keep in mind HL sumissions will recieve quite a handicap, since I can't view your source files, can't actually play the map, and of course it's a much newer engine.

I just ask that you stick to brushwork since this is a brushwork compo--no models-- to make it more fair.

Good luck Rotor! :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 00:35:25 UTC Post #205441
Rotator:

You're right, they can be judged seperately, but then you'll have to find enough people who want to do it. The only problem is that most people have moved away from detail brushwork in Source, because models have taken its place.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 00:49:45 UTC Post #205442
@Rowley:
Mmm... perhaps that'd work. If I were to do so, would you want me to host via Google Video (Lots of video compression :( ) or iHud (Downloads :( )?

Also, reverting to HL1 wouldn't be purely for the compos. I'd still be fun to map for both, regardless of the reason :)

@srry:
I do suppose you're right about the fact that we have so few Source mappers here.

I guess the argument I'm making is that regardless of the model factor, you can still experiment with advanced brush-work in Source.

@You both:
I'll start making this thing in Source for the time being, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for HL1.

Good luck to any one else who'se partisapating. :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 00:59:32 UTC Post #205443
I think fraps is pretty good video game recording softwate; pm muzzle or hunter, or google for more info.

srry: I've also heard that there is no hlfix for source... so maybe that's a small advantage for us hl1 guys :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 01:21:57 UTC Post #205445
I like the way this is turning out.

Just a simple brushwork compo to keep us occupied until the next compo. Sounds like it'll be a lot of fun :)

Any more rules you want to add to the door compo or are we all square? For instance, does it HAVE to be able to open, as well as close? etc.

EDIT: I have full fraps, and a nifty little avi -> mpg converting program. Piece-o-cake. :)
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 01:36:44 UTC Post #205446
Yup it has to open.
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 01:39:49 UTC Post #205447
And close?
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-08 01:42:40 UTC Post #205448
Um I dunno... well, closing is almost the same as opening, so I can't think of a reason why it has to close... just remember that the more functional it is, the better.

So, I guess it just has to open :)
