Mini# 10 will officially close 11am, EST, February 15th

Entries In:

Ford Exporer by Kasperg
Lexus LS430 by rowleybob
Camaro by Tetsu0

I noticed we all submitted to different categories in the Map vault!

Maybe we should all agree where they should be submitted, so it's easier for people to see them all at once? (I'll move mine to wherever the majority thinks they should go.)

WCD: Shouldn't be too hard to rescale, but if you don't want to f*** with it, no biggie imo. YOU BEST BE SUBMITTING OR I'M GOING TO EGG YOUR HOUSE!!1 :P

Kurosaki: Skim the thread and/or check out the new Minicompo Homepage for info. There should be a new compo starting shortly... :)

OK fixed the tiny render errors, made mirrors
should be 100% done. unless someone finds something else.

For scaling purposes, i stuck an info_player start in a room, and then built myself the front bumper. After that it was just using reference photos to get the shape of the car.

Iroc-z's are SO sexy.

d'you remember the tick tock clock in Mario 64? We should do a compo like that. Shrink the player and put them in the inner workings of something.

LOL you mentioned inner workings at the very beginning of the minicompos! :) I never really played mario 64, but do you mean sort-of like a rats map?
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-15 07:16:33 UTC Post #212539
Yeah except in Mario 64 you would enter the clock face portal and you would be inside the clock and you had to get to the top with all these pendulums swinging and platforms moving...Hard as hell but fun.

Or u can wait until 6:00 or 12:00, jump in, and everything would stop.
MUCH easier.
BTW

If anyone wants to know, the Camaro has 604 solids in it.

Congrats to all for the top-notch entries recieved for this one! The winner will get first dibs on the option to facilitate the next compo. If he defers, we'll talk about doing something else... so let the minicompo ideas fly! :P

@a: Post the results in here after you've completed the judging, and I'll code them up on the Minicompo Homepage as soon as you get them in.

I didn't know there was anything wrong with the map... Just in case, extract the files to your desktop and then put them in their respective folders.
Alternatively, you can watch the youtube video I put in the map description! :D

Bahh, I love high poly stuff.
I'm just making a really highpoly room. It already has 1113 brushes and 7205 faces. It'll be aproximetly 3000 wpolies in hammer. I predict my computer wont be able to run it, it's so annoying because I like this map, and I'll keep it as a secret untill I'll publish it, no screenies. ;)
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-21 19:37:24 UTC Post #213264
Reguardless of who wins the build-a-car compo, I want to throw this out there because I really like the idea. I thought about this after watching CSI:
Build a room, make it as detailed as possible, then build a detailed miniature replica of your room inside your room(it would have to be at least 1/8th scale, or even smaller to fit on a tabletop or something). Copying the room, pasting it, and rescaling wouldn't work for this, as most of you should know that scaling the kind of detail that we put into these maps would go far beyond sub-unit brushes, so it would be impossible to cheat :)

Great News :D

Finally got the Results in - 1st place is Worldcrafter with his Viper
2nd place is Kasberg with his Ford Explorer,
and 3rd Place is Tetsu with his Camaro

Im not sure what Rowleybob wants to do with the reports I wrote on them, or with the presentation of the results - so Ill leave him do that if you dont mind :P

Yay they're finally in! I hope you sent Rowley an email instead of a PM. He's boycotting TWHL.
PS: My name is 2 words, people get that wrong all the time.
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-23 21:05:41 UTC Post #213519
Well I think it's because many are just used to your old name, Worldcraft Dude.
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-23 21:09:10 UTC Post #213520
Actually, it was always two words. Worldcraft and Dude. WCD sounds better than WC, though. And you can always be a dude, right? I mean, as long as you aren't about to get a sex change or something...
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-23 21:19:05 UTC Post #213521
Anyway you got my point, he split the word worldcraft into two and thats why it might be confusing. I myself think both of his names were fine, and they will be fine as long as it wont be "hammer dude".

I think I should change my name too, it's silly to use my real name on the internet, and since we are talking of dudes how about- "Caco Dude"? It fits my cacodeamon avatar.

Back to topic- How about making a compo on creating animal statues. I recently made a dog head statue and I found it quite fun although it turned out revolting. I think this can be an intresting chalange-

Posted 17 years ago2007-02-23 21:44:37 UTC Post #213528
Well I think it's because many are just used to your old name, Worldcraft Dude.
not so much. People get it wrong all over FPSB and CDG too ;) And you guys have always been calling me WCD because both parts of my name were too generic for a nickname and the whole thing was too long. If I had always been World Crafter I'd probably be "Crafter" or something now :P But I've been using this name for a long time now and I really like it and I intend to stick with it.
And you can always be a dude, right? I mean, as long as you aren't about to get a sex change or something...
I'll always be a dude at heart :aggrieved:
Whatever, too much talk about names. Moving on...

So, I judge the next one because I won the car compo, right?
Objection! Kinda... we've already had a statue compo, and one of the entries was an animal. It seems rather redundant. How about mapping a gun? Needless to say they would have to be scaled up, but that could be a good feature. Judging would be based on accuracy, and of course, detail. Eh? Eh? Ehhhhhh?
PS: References galore
I've given this one a lot of though :( So yeah, my suggestion:

what kinda gun?

I plan on designing an orbital cannon for use in my mod - I could do with some practive beforehand - or do you a small thing, like a turret, rifle or something like that?

Here are the reports for the Competition BTW

Im sure you'll be interested :P

Viper - World Crafter
Wonderfully detailed car ? loved the vents on the bonnet (hood) and at the roots of the doors

++ Tremendous level of brushwork
++ High level of detail
+ Great Texture application/use of custom textures

No interactivity ? doesn?t matter though

Meets all specifications listed in rules section

  • No pedals
-- Car was too short!!! (or possibly too fat ? either way, scaling wasn?t fully correct) ? the car seemed far too square-ish ? cant make my mind up whether or not it was too short, or too fat?

?Superbly superb stuff!? if I may quote - The admirable aspects of your entry are astonishing and deserve more credit than mere words can provide: a well deserved 1st place ? very well done.
A tremendous level of detail has been utilised in this map, I?m surprised the compile didn?t take a year with all those faces ? the various vents, the front bumper, the bonnet-vents, even the multi-faceted windshield and rim had more brushes than you can shake a stick at: P (and indeed quite a few more brushes than the stick as well!!!)
Seating was amazing, especially the headrests ? steering wheel, gear-stick, - no pedals, but that doesn?t matter ? front and read headlights ? bumpers ? boot (trunk) everything was just magnificent
The only real concern was the scaling it was out of scale; it was either too fat, or too short (one or the other ? prolly too fat actually ? length looked all right) ? asides from this, perfect
A very well deserved First Place ? Well done World Crafter

Ford Explorer - Kasberg
++ Tremendous level of brushwork
++ High level of detail
+ Car was well scaled
+ Lovely made glass roof
+ Great Texture application/use of custom textures

No interactivity ? doesn?t matter though

Meets all specifications listed in rules section

  • No pedals
- The rear headlights were rather bland looking

Wonderful job done by Kasberg - another well deserved 2nd place ? very well done.
Great level of detail, loved the torch (albeit 2-dimensional) and the Case in the boot ? steering wheel was great too ? nice radio, Gear-stick, chairs etc etc
Loved the metal guards on the headlights and also the roof rack.
No real major concerns ? the only reason it wasn?t first place was because it lacked the supreme level of brushwork that World Crafter?s Viper had ? very well done
A very well deserved Second Place ? Great Work Kasberg

Camaro ? Tetsu
++ Tremendous level of brushwork
++ High level of detail
+ Car was well scaled
+ Excellent Rims
+ Pedals
+ Wonderfully detailed seats, gear-stick, steering wheel and handbrake
+ Great Texture application/use of custom textures
+ Ambience sounds (even if it was a tank_idle ? euch, shoulda made a custom one ? minor though ? but if I had a sports car sounding like that I would have its engine checked and its carburettor replaced)

No interactivity ? doesn?t matter though

Meets all specifications listed in rules section

- Bland looking Dashboard
- No metal grating over air intake
- Small glitches where vertices don?t sit on grid properly, resulting in odd cracks when they are aligned to the nearest grid point
  • Lines appear at sides of front where lots of vertex manipulation has occurred
Minor problem though, and easily fixed
Wonderful job done by Tetsu ? 3rd place, and wouldn?t have taken much to put it in 2nd ? few minor, almost unavoidable
Very well done ? but could have been better in some places ? few minor problems caused by vertex manipulation, mainly cracks and lines appearing ? but fairly minor ? could have been, should have been rectified though ? not too difficult if you know what you?re doing, which I?m sure you do considering the complexity of the build.
Very well designed seats, pedals, Steering Wheel, Handbrake and Gear-stick.
Dashboard was a little bland though, not too minor though.
No real major concerns ? wouldn?t have taken much to put in second place in place of the Ford Explorer
Wonderful Job Tetsu ? wouldn?t have taken much to put it on top either, just a tad of bad luck I guess.
PS - sorry its not as detailed as what Rowleybob has produced in prior compos

I sent you a PM with a few of the details for the next minicompo, A. As for your question about the guns, it would have to be a "carryable" weapons like a rifle or a pistol or an RPG or something. No turrets, artillary, or any large weapons that have to be grounded.
We need trophies.
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-25 03:03:56 UTC Post #213791
Well i like the map a gun idea a lot. It's very unique and i already have a few ideas of what i would do. But until rowleybob makes it official i'm not going to really get in-depth with any brushwork.

ideas spectacular tho.

And thanks for the in-depth description a. It really cleared up why WCD took first (and after another d/l and view of his amazing viper)

Rowleybob said that he has no intentions on returning to the forums anytime soon - Ive set up a webpage that we can host the competitions on, in similar fashion to what rowleybob done: but im afraid the original webpage is out of my grasps: i could copy the layout if I really wanted, but the basic layour will suffice until I can find a free weekend to update it - might take a lot of work changing all the links and that though: but oh well

Query - see this gun, can it be a func_tank - like the snipers found in the original half-life?

and failing that - does it have to be to correct scale, eg, I cant have a pistol the size of Gordon Freeman?
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-25 11:07:38 UTC Post #213848
No, there made of standard vertexes and faces. Nothing more.

Let alone that such modeling actualy excists....
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-25 16:55:43 UTC Post #213896
The scaling of the gun doesn't matter. Correct propportions would be nice(says the man with the side Viper), but the size in comparison to the player/world doesn't matter at all. Like I told you in the PM, bigger = more room for detail. You could make it the size of a castle if you wanted.
A func_tank would probbaly be a bad idea, as it would limit how big your gun could be in comparison to the player. If you were to go with it though, like I said before, it would have to be some kind of rifle with bipods or a machine gun or something, not a weapon that could not be easily picked up and carried away in real life(like a mounted cannon).
When I said that functionality would be a good thing to have, I meant functioning parts of the weapon. A func_tank is nothing, anybody can do that. I'm talking things like working slides, releasable magazines, and even a full blown firing system(complete with all the necessary parts working and a bullet coming out of the barrel).

Auch Aye the noo Laddy (speaking of which, I dont think I have ever heard a scotsman say that :|)

Anyhoo - its starts today aye?
Posted 17 years ago2007-02-26 17:56:35 UTC Post #214036
Aye Aye Cap'n it starts today.

Advanced Brushwork Minicompo #11 - Map a Gun
Map a single-man firearm(pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc) or propelled explosive(RPG, grenade launcher, etc).
Rules and notes:
-The gun can be real or made up. Just remember to be extremely creative if you are going with a concept weapon because you will have to compete with real life replicas.
-Weapons must be "portable", meaning they can be carried by one man or used by one man, not necessarily handheld. No turrets or artillary or any of those massive guns that have to be grounded. Weapons with bipods are acceptable, but no large mounted weapons are allowed. If you are afraid that your weapon is unacceptable, post a question about it in the minicompo thread and I'll let you know if it's ok.
-Judging will be based on accuracy, functionality(largely optional), and most of all, detail.
-"Functionality" means more than just a func_tank that fires bullet sprites form the barrel.
-Custom content is allowed.
-Weapons do not have to be realistically scaled. Preferably, they will be realistically proportioned, but the actual size of the gun in comparison to the world doesn't matter. Remember: bigger = more room for detail
The competition will last two weeks, ending on the morning of the March 13th(roughly around 7:30 AM US eastern time). As usual, it will also end after 5 entries are submitted, and all entries beyond 5 on the last day are accepted as well.

Good reference website: http://world.guns.ru/main-e.htm
Let the games begin.
