You may like it or it may be a sucky idea but I'll just put it out there.
It's sucky, I don't like it.

Nah, it's not a bad idea, but it's basically already covered with the new projects system. ;)

Here's what Penguinboy had to say about them:
A project is a mod, a program, a map if you want, a drawing, anything you want! But, projects are generally limited to mods and programs such as my Twister or muzz's Compilator.

Each Project gets its own private forum for team members, their own news reel, and maybe even their own shoutbox (replaces current one), or a public forum. But I want to keep public forums out if I possibly can. Projects will get limited (if any) storage space to upload screenshots (probably will just link to imageshack).

There will be a 'Project quick news' news update on the right of the main page, and a bigger version on the main project page. This is much like the news feed thingie on sites such as Facebook ("Twister has uploaded 3 screenshots","Half-Life: Hostage Situation has posted 1 news update","6D has provided 2 new downloads", etc).
EDIT: Argh, too slow. :(

Just out of curiousity but will you keep the stats page and reset it? Would be more fair since I always seem to have 2nd most viewed profile hits and I wonder when that happened...

There should be a new suggestions thread.

Anywho - I really like how the MotM page looks now, a MV-like layout for the main page works just fine. However, the page with the winning map itself could use a change or two.

The way each review gets its own page is very nice, though I think each review page should still contain the Winner Info section at the top (you could just merge it with each review and scrap it as a separate scetion). Also, a Next/Prev. review button would work right.

The way scores are coloured depending on the percentage is mighty nice aswell. ;>

i wish the font was bigger in the last post column. I tried to increase it but it stays small while the rest of the page increses. Its kind of hard for me to pickout the name of the author.

Why? You can just scroll click the links to open them in new tabs.

I think there are too many stickies in general, and I think permanent stuff like forum guidelines should be a different font or otherwise seperated so it stands out and people read it.

It might be cool if all the stickies were segregated from the regular posts with a line or shading or something. Imo it's sort of cluttered/confusing the way it is now.

Speed up the site by removing unnesecary white spaces (tabs, spaces and new lines) in output.
This:
<fieldset style="display: inline;">
 Search for: <input type="text" size="16" name="sstr" /> in
 <select name="sloc">
 <option value="tuts">Tutorials</option>
<strong>TWHL</strong
takes a lot longer time to process and send, and more bandwith than this:
<fieldset style="display: inline;">Search for: <input type="text" size="16" name="sstr" /> in <select name="sloc"><option value="tuts">Tutorials</option><b>TWHL</b>
It's a pain in the ass to make changes in a code without white space, but save the original code somewhere, and make copies of it and parse it with an html optimizer.

If youre not already using one, I recommend that you use a php optimizer as well.
It can make the site many times faster.
Processed in a lousy 1624 milliseconds
Processed in a pretty quick 166 milliseconds

i don't need external programs screwing my code up. it's more efficient than any "optimiser" could make it anyway. you'd have to be a really sloppy coder to have to rely on an "optimiser" to get your code working as it should.

also, the whitespace makes such a minuscule difference that it doesn't matter, and well-formed code is much more important than the 0.2ms difference that unreadable markup would make. a newline is only two characters, in the end.

it's not my code that is slow, it's the server itself.
Penguinboy PenguinboyHaha, I died again!
Posted 16 years ago2008-03-13 17:34:01 UTC Post #247634
As long as it doesn't change the wrong things, and only removes whitespaces and comments, it dosn't make anything work differently at all.
The only downside is that it makes development harder.
http://google.com/
Look at the source code. That's one of the main reasons Google loads that fast (and, of course, they can afford some great hardware).
Wait, bad example. They don't have a doctype, there are missing quotes and cryptic element ids.

EDIT6: Edited almost everything. Reread.
EDIT7: msn.com (ough Micro$oft) is a better example. Compare with yahoo.com.

I found myself installing from scratch on a new computer, and the links
section looks pretty good, save possibly these two additions:

Nem's tools
and
HLFix

I'm sure there are indirect links to these in the links somewhere (though I couldn't find them easily), but I think they're important enough to have their own. (Nem's surely)

edit: You might also include seventh-monkey's Mapping with steam tutorial at the top of the page (as long as you have the WON setup instructions there), as I'd guess many goldsource mappers use steam.

Sorry if any of this is redundant.

Nem's tools should definately go in there. From what I hear HLfix is kind of useless, so I don't know about that.

I think the vote buttons for MOTM should be a different shape/color because they blend/look-like the game tags. I've looked at the MOTM page 20 times, but just realized that's how you vote! = >

On an unrelated, i think there should be a link on the main page for caek. (if it's already there and I just don't see it, I apologize)

Just a little thing: usernames aren't links to profiles in some places. There's pretty much never a time when they shouldn't be links.

Also, this box seems to be in monospace? Might want to CSS it to make it look more like it will appear when posted.

That vote button on the map page next to what game its for should be removed. I accidently clicked it and it sayed I voted the map for motm. Plus If I vere to rate a map I would click on the vote button thinking it vould allow me to rate it.

Possibly stickies should have the green color when their active (like normal threads).

The User Last Login date/time are disappeared. It's very useful for stalking people. = ) If somehow i'm not seeing it, stamp my passport for failure towne.

TWHL should have an elaborate flash intro with a loading bar, and a cool link to skip the flash intro if you decided you didn't want to see it.

Lastly, i was wondering about a TWHL editorial, from the mods or a really good/experienced mapper, that would come out each day or ever other or something. (journals sort of serve this purpose, but something more formal)

They could talk about development news, new games, engines whatever, but it would be nice to have something like that. (perhaps the same thing for the map vault, like a featured review everyday might be cool)

With the shoutbox, could you make it re-direct links to the main page window as opposed to the small shoutbox window. Unless it's another opera thing, that is.

IMO, the "X comments" link should be at the bottom of the journals content, not the top. It's the way it is in most blog-type things, and I keep clicking on the wrong comments link (a small nuisance, but meh).
