Because the Competition 27 thread already exists, I present to you the "official" competition 27 thread!

You've all got a bit over a month to get an entry together, so map away.

We really, really cant extend this one due to judging limitations, so have them in on time.

Discuss.

I am in no way important to this months competition and cannot possibly sway the results, but I want you all to know I'll be taking bribes anyway. Cash prefered.

I will be selling ideas, accompanied by crude MSPaint drawings for $300 USD a map. They might get you a trophy.
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-08 02:08:43 UTC Post #268052
The map can look like anything, but the walk-able floor space must reflect the layout. The bumpy natural line at the top of the layout can be a beach-front into an expansive ocean, you'll just have to kill the player before he can get too far into the water and away from the layout.
That doesn't mean it has to be a "beach-front into an expansive ocean", does it?

And a friggin brilliant idea at that. Whoever came up with it should be sent money.

It will be judged in an extremely liberal manner.
Can you define liberal?

Wooooooooooooooooooooo compo, I've started blocking it out, that rock/sand/nature bit looks interesting. Maybe ep2 this time
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-08 02:20:34 UTC Post #268057
Liberal means you can legally use a very large variety of interpretations and not be disqualified. Just keep the map reasonably close to the layout.

In the layout, when parts cross each other, does it matter which part is above and which is under?
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-08 05:34:13 UTC Post #268065
No, it doesn't matter.

Guys, I'm not actually going to enter this compo, but can I please win anyway? You know if I did enter I would win for sure. I just think given the circumstances it should be defaulted to me. Thanks.

Hi guys,

I haven't mapped for half-life for quite a while. If I would be joining this competition, can I use Blender to map? 'Coz I found out that it can export .blend files to .map files.

(I'm still not sure if i'm joining)

Thanks in Advance :D

Is it ok if I make any extra ways that cut through the map. I want to add some vents "not more hallways" to get through the map. For example the blue represents some ways I want to add.

I've got an impressive start already. Its just dev textures and the geometry, soon to be textured.

I just realised something. I'm sorry to say but competitions here on twhl are for nothing. You have to win something not just a virtual image representing an award.
Money is the most usual way, but it's not the best. A TWHL T-Shirt or a piece of hardware. Something like that. The most simple would be a Steam Gift.
Oh no ! "We poor admins from TWHL don't have money to support such things !".
Then don't organize competitions...

Of course it would bee nice if we had cash awards for every competition, but i think that's a very shitty attitude striker.

Personally, the best thing i get out of a compo is pushing myself harder than i normally would to create produce something better than i ordinarily would, like challenging yourself, ya know? who cares about a $40 steam gift when it comes right down to it... the "virtual image" as you call is important because it represents distinction above the other people that entered the compo, recognizing u did a good job, and are deserve winnar.

Recognition for "being the best" is the implied reward. That's enough for me. I won't enter a mapping contest for money, there's plenty of other, easier ways to earn pocket change.

I think I'll say what's on everyone's mind:

Then get the fuck out of TWHL. No body asked you to use your time in this competition, therefore no one gives a fuck about what you have to say. Want there to be a prize? Go buy a hand gun and shoot yourself in the face. You wont have to suffer from your own stupidity anymore, that's pretty rewarding.

That wouldn't so much reward yourself as it would everyone else.

Seriously, shut the fuck up.

the rough section kinda makes it difficult to plan the map hey?? Those two square things in that area with the little connecting tunnel...can they be underground, level with, or over the large rough area???

You could technically make those two squares block movement on one of those elevations, or both of them, but there has to be some obstical to player movement in that general location. Might I reccomend boxes or something?

The fact that they're filled in with colour gives the impression that they would be pillars or something which stops you walking there.

okay...so like lets say they are a building...are you allowed inside if there was a door or only on the roof as its marked with a white area
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-09 22:48:15 UTC Post #268146
You cant go inside them, but I dont guess I mind if you can climb on top of them so long as they're not easily accessible.

okay...i was just a bit confused because they were coloured white so i assumed it was walkable space but the shapes confused...thankyou
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-09 23:41:48 UTC Post #268148
I've changed my mind. You can go inside of them, just make sure the changes dont affect the layout ultra-significantly. Just make sure that the final layout maps back to the original.

If I'm understanding this, hotdog is referring to the two larger blocks, near the top, with the random-assed scribbles on them?

But Grim thinks he's referring to the two smaller, side-by-side ones, filled in yellow, near the middle?

That's just how I'm reading it...
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-09 23:47:10 UTC Post #268150
Oh, I was talking about the white boxes at the top when I told Grim to change his mind. Anything filled with colour shouldn't be walkable.
