I'm comparing aspects of Uncharted to GTA IV, not the entire game. GTA IV attempts to make use of cover-based shooting and it fails miserably. As for not taking itself seriously, it seems to be divided in both camps. If you want a sandbox game that truly doesn't take itself seriously, play Just Cause 2, which is far more enjoyable. That game allows you to hookshot an enemy onto a passing airplane just for the hell of it. Want to stand on top of a airliner while it's flying? Go ahead!

You hold Shift to run, which makes no sense.
Doesn't half-life 2 and every single game that isn't a decade old do this?

You're being far too harsh. Fail miserably? Not at all. It's perfectly playable. Don't like the controls? Re-bind them.

Just Cause 2, I don't really want to comment on. I own the game, but I haven't been able to play past saving the dude from the hotel right at the very start because they voice acting is so unimaginably fucking bad. Like, painfully bad, and for you to have commented on GTAIV's voice acting earlier and then recommend Just Cause 2 is pretty backwards.

edit:
Yes, Crollo, they do. I'm also pretty certain there's an 'always run' option in GTAIV as well. .

Blocking edits, blocking edits everywhere!

Again, while out of context it may seem that way, he was only comparing the sandbox aspect, not necessarily anything else. Just like the miscommunication with the cover system, which even I didn't realize at first.

EDIT: Funny that you mention that option Archie, because IIRC, every game that isn't a decade old also has that function anyways.

Also, don't get me started on far cry 2...

Crollo: Gordon doesn't move infuriatingly slow if you aren't holding shift.

Huntey: This has nothing to do with rebinding controls: are you even reading my points?

I also mentioned that Just Cause 2 is a game that doesn't take itself seriously, unlike aspects of GTA IV. That's a game where the sandbox actually makes sense. I never said Just Cause 2 was a blindingly brilliant, all around package.

Now I thought we were discussing the mechanics of having a 'walk unless run' feature, not the speed of either walking or running.

To be honest, the movement in HL2 is a little annoying. He moves a lot slower than in the original, and the sprint function is stupidly short.

I like games that don't take themselves seriously, but it doesn't mean it shouldn't be a good game too. GTA and Fallout 3 are both awful games in my eyes, silly writing and dumb situations aren't going to save them.

Now Playing: Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm in favour of Fallout 3 / New Vegas and GTAIV personally. Just Cause 2 is unavailable to me for now because it's stuck up it's own arse with DX10 (I'm running WinXP still). I only ever played the demo of Just Cause 1 and I hated it.

GTAIV is appealing to me for its physics system, Euphoria. It is the only game that fully utilises it at the moment which is a huge shame because so many games could benefit from it and enhance it. It makes online dicking around sessions all the more hilarious.

Fallout 3 is astounding if RPG's are your thing. I think too many people expect it to play like an FPS, which it really isn't. If it were then it would be STALKER (the less said about that tripe the better :P ).

New Vegas was slandered to high heaven by the console tard market and at the end of the day, I'm not surprised. It is not a console friendly game. It is a hell of a lot better than Fallout 3 mechanics wise. The factions system and weapon upgrades and hours of unmarked quests and locations make it so addictive.

As for consoles, adventure games such as Uncharted 2 are prefect. I think I'm nearly finished with it but it's been a blast so far. The camera work and effects mean that the missus can watch it like an action movie while I play. :D

I tried to play Fallout New Vegas, but it was exactly like Fallout 3, so I just couldn't keep playing. It was so goddamn boring. It got a good three hours from me and it wasn't getting any better. The general bugginess, crashiness, and bad performance didn't help either.

I got more than enough of Fallout 3 while I was playing Fallout 3. I guess that means I don't need to play any Bethesda game ever again :)

As for Just Cause, I played the start of the first game and really didn't like it. The music was pretty good though.

My favourite sandbox game, and the only one I've really liked, is Infamous.

I don't know if this can apply here, or if anyone cared to know for that matter, however, Diablo 3 seems to have released details on the new 'forging system' and information on a character class called 'demon hunter'.

http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/

On a related note, can anyone offer confirmation for me as to the release date of Diablo 3 being set at 2015 ?!?>? Because that really upset me. :(

Those updates aren't really new, but they are cool.

And no, the release date is most certainly definitely not 2015.

I'm replaying Fallout 3, now heavily modded with things such as Fellout, (which makes things that shouldn't be green less green) Enhanced Weather, (which adds rain and snow) And Arwen's Realism Tweaks (which has a ton of gameplay changes such as a slower timescale, knockouts, more knockdowns, and increased damage on almost every weapon. The few enclave soldiers that spawn before they arrive in the story, whether or not it was intentional, are now deadly at lower levels.) It's still Fallout 3, but it's so much more enjoyable than replaying vanilla again for the 23rd(ish) time.

Bad Company 2 (Online Multiplayer)

Went back to it this evening after getting pissed off with the Vietnam expansion. There is no skill to Vietnam at all. With the spotting system, all you have to do is aim for the blip on your HUD and your bound to get a kill since all the buildings are made of paper or some shit like that. Utterly pointless.

The original BC2 hasn't lost it's charm. At they keep adding new stuff to it. Played 3 new maps today and each one is a drastic improvement over the ones in the initial release.

Played with Archie on TeamSpeak, while both of us were drinking. If there is anything more funny to listen to than a pissed of Scotsman, it's a pissed of Scotsman, slightly under the influence, chasing an enemy tank down the street with nothing but a C4 charge in his hand.

I haven't brought myself to go back to Uncharted 2 yet. I'm fairly sure I'm near the end but the combat in the game is so flat that it can get sooo boring after a few minutes. The cinematic sections are fantastic though, and fortunately, there are more of them than there are combat sections.

Ripping on source.. perfectly fine and natural (hell, expected of you)

however, ripping on 1.6, now that's just uncalled for. (nor is it going to sit right. see, I had been tossing these around, seeing what sounded better, apparently, I went with the latter.) (I hate texting, on the ps3.. "/ )

Oh New Vegas, why can't I resist your charms? After 95 hours of clocked Steam game time, after defeating you 3 times, why do I keep coming back?

Oh yeah, because I'm still finding new things that make me laugh out loud and present new challenges. The massive modding community also helps keep the game fresh. Other developers should learn from this. 95 hours I've played New Vegas, and it cost me ?25.
The latest Medal of Honor? Almost ?50 and has 4 hours of gameplay.

Oh, and every so often I take screenies in 1920 x 1080 for wallpapers. Full selection here.

Has anybody tried to mod Fallout 3? (or any other game in that engine, for that matter)

I find it interesting that there's no such thing as world brushes, as even the game world is formed by modular prefab models. While it allows to easily make large maps conforming to a standard set of measures independently of the mapper (and easily making custom content that's exactly like default content) I find it rather constrictive that you're stuck with making your world out of a predefined set of model blocks. It takes away all the flexibility that allows creative mappers to generate impressive architecture and details with generic building blocks - such as in HL. Plus having to make your whole map only looking at one (3D) view totally sucks. Hammer a 12 year old tool wins <3

Hell yeah, Mass Effect was awesome. I have an old save file I could make use of to start Mass Effect 2, but I wanted to play through 1 again cos it was so excellent.

I understand they got rid of overheating and added ammunition, which is sort of a weird decision. It could go either way in terms of gameplay benefit..
Posted 13 years ago2011-01-29 03:12:34 UTC Post #289748
It works well, Rotator. The overheating thing really annoyed me at times in the first game. And you're never really short of ammunition for your main weapons.

Playing Dead Space 2 now, it's like the first game on crack or something. Just nuts. They should fire their scriptwriter though, the dialogue mostly just consists of "fuck!" and "shit!" with a few words thrown in either side of it. :P

Not sure about achievements. I like them, but I reckon that when you're playing a game for the first time, they shouldn't pop up. Nothing takes you out of the story than some obnoxious pop-up reminding you that you're playing a game. Multiplayer wouldn't be as big an issue though.

Sure am! To be honest, it's a lot of games that have some kind of pedigree behind them (i.e. highly-rated in their time) that I never got a chance to play. Since Steam seems to love offering stuff at ridiculous prices, I'm stocking up.
