Last night when i posted that, i was on my 6th car bomb(and my second double "rocket ship", (whatever that is)), and had just hard-booted into werewolf mode. I think it might be a good idea to leave my phone at home so i can't update from the bar...

Please consider all conspiracy-related posts retracted and sincerely apologized for. I hope i didn't post anywhere else last night...

Meanwhile, a teaser:

I guess this will be my FINAL entry, since i don't think i'll have the time to tweak it any more before the deadline. I have LOADS of other ideas for this compo, but i'll save them for 30-brushes: part II.

)

I was inspired to by White Devil's Mapcore entry to employ these type of beveled cubes for my entry, though i expanded on it by "extruding" the beveled sides that amazingly, compiled in hammer 3.x.

I would like to tweak the lighting more, but it takes my computer 7 hours for RAD compile due to the the crazy solids i used in this(every brush besides the orgin and the 4 comprising the small arch contain 42 faces). I originally had everything scaled down to .25, but hammer REALLY didn't like that, and compiled pretty much to infinity. =)

The white dev texture is by Rimrook.

You could add spawns and weapons to make a playable DM, but i didn't do that.

Note: I tried to port this to source, but hammer 4 doesn't like these strange solids and refuses to render them in most cases(It will render the roof brush but not the pillars or other fence pieces fsr). I suspect it has something to do with HLFix that hammer 3.x can tolerate these strange solids.

Wow captain I really like it! Good job brotha. Sorry I haven't posted mine yet, i've been at school eleven hours a day... Geez those are some intense brushes lol! I didn't go extreme with the ammount of faces.

@ door. People that have been around here for some time know better to call me... eizenhazenshagonwaggon.

Nice quailcreek, reminds me of black mesa. And the map "comboman" by mammus I think.

Playable version:
47 Solids

trigger_push: 6 brushes "one big trigger"
sky_box: 6 brushes
trigger_teleport: 2 brushes "two teleports"
trigger_multiple: 1 brush "targets elevator"
origin: 1 brush "for elevator"
trigger_hurt: 1 brush "fall kill"

17 functional/invisible brushes. 47-17=30 solid visible brushes.

Competition entry version:
36 Solids
sky_box: 6 brushes

36-6=30 solid visible brushes.

Funny, I used rim's grass and edited vine texture. Thanks!

Don't let the wind push you to your fall as you gauss around this skyscraper summit. Take the elevator to the gauss and conveniently teleport to helpful destinations. Scared of heights? Hold the lower level secure by blasting your enemy with the shotgun and rpg. Are you skillful enough to aquire the legendary bow "awp of halflife"?

These entries are superb. :D

@captain terror: Gorgeous lighting, the only thing I'd remotely think about changing is the floor brush to extend it to extend it as far as possible into the horizon; just for a semi-infinite look. But otherwise, this is my favourite use of a tron-like theme I've seen with limited brushes so far.

@quailcreek: Interesting generator, I like the use of brushes. :D

@zeeba: I like the architecture, I sense you've taken some inspiration from an entry to the mapcore compo, since the brushwork looks a little similar.
Posted 12 years ago2011-04-07 14:47:21 UTC Post #293181
Yes i'm pretty sure the three column/beams were subconsciously inspired by one but it is a basic good way to make space more playable so not sure if it was.
Posted 12 years ago2011-04-07 16:01:43 UTC Post #293184
@captain terror: Even though it's impressive how much you can get from one brush, I would advise you to work on the atmosphere a bit more. The grey dev-like texture doesn't do it for me and so I don't find the screenshots very appealing. However, that's just my opinion and I'm sure a lot of people will vote for the complexity you managed to work into the brushwork. Still, hopefully you'll get time free to tune it a bit more! ;)

eizenhazenshagonwaggon: Thanks for your comments zeeba and very nice entry yourself! (maybe don't let photobucket resize your images so i can zoom in and see the goodness better ;))

door: Thank-you and a very interesting entry by you! Also i agree about the floor brush; i actually rounded and enlarged the floor brush in my last edit, but i never compiled it yet.

We keep getting entries like this we may have one of our most popular compos to date? who else is joining?!

quailcreek: Thank-you that means a lot sir. =)

Freshed: Thanks and i agree with you 1000%. I always skimp on sky and textures because of laziness. (i assume when you say atmosphere you mean sky) I also tend to focus on objects and individual structures rather than the environment as a whole. Hey if you can think of any more tips/suggestions, please hit me up on steam(captain0terror@gmail.com) and/or pm!

quailcreek: i'm still studying your entry do see how you built those structures. It would be nice if you showed more hammer views to see how you did that.

the textures look a bit stretched in places, though i love how you seamlessly blended them with the rest of the brushes; it's hard to tell where the the brushwork ends and the flat texture detail begins.

Nice work! =)

Zeeba: i love the vertical structure of your map, which kinda reminds me of your dream compo end map, though i questions some of your texture choices, namely that black glass texture.

commieman: That's AWESOME.. so minimalistic..

As for the seemless texturing, I flattened the brushes protruding from the floor and ceiling before applying textures, then used the "World" (a.k.a orthographic projection) option, and extended the brushes back out.

By my count, there are 16 entries. With 1 day, 21 hours left, do you think we can make it 20?

Who else plans to submit entries? Soup Miner? Rimrook? Strider? Daubster? Anyone else?

GET THOSE ENTRIES IN! (ok i'll shut up now)

Haha awesome dude wowsers! ! ! ! ! Yes there is some wonderful competition going on here. We should play our maps!

I really like the clean look to your map. And the vertical and lateral gameplay. Mine was mainly vertical gameplay.

The cool toned lights with directional sprites add a lot to your map's "modern" feel.

You guys should all post the maps in the vault to get a real idea of them.

Edit: No weapons? :aggrieved: Playable version coming up asap!!! :glad:

Kraken: your map had my vote on lock-down until tetsu0's map came out. Choosing a favourite is going to be EXTREMELY hard.. ='(

Tetsu0: I like everything about your map. It's original, it looks beautiful, and it also looks highly playable for a map that only has 30 brushes. Those sprites and pointlights are also an excellent accent the environment. Just gorgeous stuff man!

It looks very Unreal Tournament-ish, Tetsu0. Amazing quality for goldsource, but then I saw it was actually made for source. That was dissapointing, but it's still a great entry.

I'm wanting to enter, but unfortunately I'm having some lightning issues that I can't seem to track back to the compile logs or anything.

@ Capt. T: With atmosphere I just mean the whole 'feel' or look of the map. So far i'm impressed with the actual structures you made, but the picture as a whole misses a 'soul'. Try to incorporate the structure in the rest of the environment, so it seems part of the environment. The sky is certainly key in this one. Perhaps i'm being a bit too abstract now, but I hope my point comes across. The entry looks good, don't get me wrong, but it can be better with just a few touches of love! ;)

Thanks Stoje. And fresheD, there's only about 4-5 hours into that map, and most of the detail work and lighting I did as I was Laying in bed. that's what I get for procrastinating.

because it is getting annoying! It will be better as a model with smooth shading anyway.

Imo, the gray dev texture gives the impression that the structure is rising from the blueprint, right off the paper and into reality. I can understand it being seen as unpolished, but I have to contest.
