BFE is fun, but it suffers from some dumb 'modernizations' that make kind of go against it's nature as an old-school shooter. Things like an instant take-down button, iron-sights, a 3-4 hour tutorial phase, low enemy count, horribly small FOV and really bad melee weapon that has nothing on the chainsaw.

Played it co-op with Ant and enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but it's just nowhere as good as the originals I think. :<

Yeah, but you get the original version.
Played two matches of Command and Conquer: Generals with a friend yesterday.
First match was one on one, he kicked the crap out of me as GLA. Second match we played USA against a map full of two teams of hard AI. They were somehow psychic, and kept bombing his dozers as soon as he made them. After about an hour, we somehow managed to beat them back and win.

Starting to get pretty consistantly good scores in BF3. It helps having Urby at my side - he's a ridicu-good medic (but an awful support, AMMO PLS FFS) :D

Such a good game. Why they even bothered adding a Single Player portion is beyond me.

Diablo 3, or I was for 15 mins until the servers went down for the 3rd time.

Someone start working on an offline hack for this fucked game.

So you have to log in just to play? I thought that was only to test the servers during the beta. In that case, I might give D3 a miss. That set up was beyond horrible. I don't want random fuckers jumping into my game! :|

I have also been playing a whole ton of BF3 recently. See Archie's post for full details.

I also tried out the DiRT Showdown demo on steam. It was, not great

I think the people complaining about having to be online to play singleplayer Diablo are forgetting something- THERE IS NO FRIGGIN SINGLEPLAYER.

You bought a multiplayer game. You can run a live instance of the game and just not let anyone else in if you want, if that's your thing. It's still a multiplayer game. With a real money auction house, all items and toon information needs to be stored server-side. It's not DRM, and it's not a single player game.
Someone start working on an offline hack for this fucked game.
Hack the client all you want, your toon, the mobs, events, and all the items are still being generated by the server. Nothing you can do about it.

And Urby, random fuckers can't join until you select the "Open game to public" option from the in-game menu.

That being said I'm just about 4-5 hours into it myself, and I can't wait to get home from work and keep playing. Anyone else on the NA servers?

Oh and Urby- a little BF3 support trick. See a medkit on the ground? It needs an ammokit-hug. It's a lonely, and cold medkit. They are all lonely and cold. Make all of them warm and hugged by an ammokit, and you're instantly a half-good support. Spraying bullets around wildly is the other half.
Posted 11 years ago2012-05-16 11:38:00 UTC Post #306167
Oh, ok. I wasn't really following D3, I just tried the beta but couldn't connect half the time and when I could there were other people running around in my shit. So there is no official SP at all and you HAVE to be online to play? Fine. D3 can fuck off.

In BF3 I rarely play support. I only picked it up recently for SQDM and TDM games so there are few opportunities to actually drop ammo or health. I'm slowly moving back to recon and playing more engineer now that I've unlocked everything for assault.

I think at this point in time I'm willing to say that BF3 is the second best multiplayer game of all time.

This is behind TF2 for me with a close second. If TF2 was the original version without all of the retarded weapons it'd be farther, but alas.

Although I'm going to be playing D3 for quite a bit at first. Prior to launch I play or practice BF3 at least once a day, pretty much as a rule. I'll be back to it in no time, I'm sure. It's a pitiful try. Conviction was already cracked and released on the pirate market before it was even officially released.
To say that punishing loyal fans and legitimate purchasers is okay, that pirates should have a better experience then legitimate buyers is just ludacris.

Use the TWHL platoon to find other community members on BF3. Also PM me with your id if you're playing and haven't been invited yet. ;)

Also, TWHL Steam group admins, feel free to post up an event if you're having a few frags and need backup! Or message an admin on Steam to do it for you if you're not a mod. That's a sure way to get people in community gathers, and it's definitely being underused.

Stop arguing about DRM over Diablo! It's not DRM! It's to stop fuckwits who kinda-sorta like Diablo from ruining Diablo like they ruined every other fucking version of Diablo! That's why Diablo die-hards play on private servers about 1/1000 the size of Bnet. It's a multiplayer game, it's 100% about end-game, and it allows item/money trades in game. Always on connection. Needed. Done deal.

Is WoW's connection considered DRM? No!

Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen
Posted 11 years ago2012-05-17 04:30:59 UTC Post #306186
Well, my point is, if it's not an only-multiplayer game like WoW [MMO], that comparison doesn't apply.
Requiring the user to log in and have an active internet connection for playing multiplayer can be done without DRM. It's done in pretty much any game I could even think of. [Except for Conviction and Steam games, which are already DRM'd in a sense.]

From what I can tell it has a campaign, and in my opinion you should not have to even have an account to just play that, let alone be logged in with a 24\7 internet connection.

I guess I'm not a die-hard Diablo fan. I loved Diablo 2, played it for hours on end. I just don't like the idea of needing to log in to a server (that could very well go down) to play a game on my own.

Collapse: No, but Guild Wars is. And it works the same way- every time you leave town you create your own instance. Replace the social town with the chat channel and you have exactly how D3 works. D3 is obviously not technically an MMO, even if that point meant anything to begin with.
if it's not an only-multiplayer game like WoW
BUT IT IS, FFS. You can run around alone like a dickweed in WoW, too.
Posted 11 years ago2012-05-17 10:36:50 UTC Post #306189
Sorry Blitz, but as much as you seem to like Diablo, I have to say that the always online thing is definitely a form of DRM, and a very effective one at that. Unfortunately it's also very restrictive for the users, as error 37 has made all too apparent. When Blizzard shuts down their servers (whenever that will be), Diablo 3 will never be playable again unless they patch out the DRM or they release the server code so people can host their own private servers.

The auction site is a disgusting way to implement microtransactions on procedurally-generated in-game items and generally rip people off, and is a pretty weak excuse for always-online. In the past you could just load up a modding tool and add the weapon stats you wanted, and didn't have to pay a cent. Now with this always-online nonsense, absolutely all modding capabilities featured in the previous games are essentially flushed down the gurgle pipe.

And Diablo is a single player game if you classify it as one, just like the first two games were. In contrast, TF2 is considered to be a multiplayer only game but you can still play that offline with bots if you really wanted to, or alternatively over a LAN.

Not trying to start an argument with you because you've obviously already made up your mind, but you give Activision too much credit. They're certainly pleased that Diablo 3 has such effective DRM, the millions of upset players are of little concern for them.

Got mappers block recently. Been playing a ton of OpenTTD instead. I love it.

Huntey City won't let me build there anymore. Apparently I pissed them off at some point in the past. As such, I ripped out the airstrip I built and moved my interests one city over. Huntey City was the 2nd largest city in the world at one point. Now it's the tenth because they wouldn't let me build a passenger railway.

Fuck you Huntey City. I hope you're happy.

"Completed" Just Cause 2, although doing the main missions don't really count as finishing a sandbox fuckaround type game. Awesome for some late-night mindless grappling hook fun.

Playing Rage at the same time. Lovig the responsive and fun gameplay, but the id guys seriously need a good writer. That tiny spark of a storyline in Doom 3 disappeared once again.
