I may have something of a bad new about my level. I tried to include fog in it, but it wouldn't work for me, so I left it there in the belief no-one else would have fog either. Now I recently played the demo levels for Spirit of Half-Life, and it seems like my computer is in-capable of rendering the fog. I hope this works as an excuse if the fog is bad, but I really thought the fog was broken in the game, and wouldn't work at all.

Fog has never worked for me either.

In other news, I am working on this as often as possible but babies are a major time sink.

I'm thinking a beta release on TWHL first, then fixes and a full release to moddb and RTSL.

I would highly recommend NOT releasing an early beta (sorry guys), because ppl like phillip, moddb, and others might redistribute the beta, and players will play that and may eventually overlook the finished product. I'm sure all of us are eager to take the TWHL Tower Tour, but don't you allrather play the finished version?
Posted 9 years ago2015-04-19 05:55:53 UTC Post #325304
If people redistribute stuff, isn't that copyright infrigment then?
Dr. Orange Dr. OrangeSource good.
Posted 9 years ago2015-04-19 12:46:10 UTC Post #325309
For starters, we never filed for copyright.
Also we're using Valve's engine, content, and IP, so filing for copyright would be in a legal grey-area at best.

The beta would be released here only.

@Jeff: You don't need to "file" for copyright. It's automatic and would indeed apply to a mod (doesn't matter that the engine that runs it is somebody else's). There's no grey area, it's 100% clear that a mod is a copyrighted work.

See Wikipedia:
In all countries where the Berne Convention standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office. Once an idea has been reduced to tangible form, for example by securing it in a fixed medium (such as a drawing, sheet music, photograph, a videotape, or a computer file), the copyright holder is entitled to enforce his or her exclusive rights.
Whether or not it's an actual copyright infringement depends on whether fair use (fair dealing) can be applied to re-hosting a free download. It varies per country and each case needs to be investigated by lawyers, which makes it difficult to find any information on the subject.

However, the best you could realistically do in this case is request that the other website takes your content down. If they decide not to, you can't do much about it.

In my opinion the room size is too restrictive for some one who wanted to make an atmospheric map. For example I pretty much never played half life more than multi player maps when I was younger, and some fine mods.

Height of the celling really has an influence on maximum creativity of individuals.

Maybe the better idea would have been TWHL mini universe (MiniVerse):

I already had an idea for a follow up mod. Only limits would be that the map must focus on ascending from bottom to top. Or even descending.

Started linking the floors last night as well. While feeling ill. Fun stuff...

I hope that follow-up mod will be for Source engine. GoldSource have it's well known restrictions, and a lot of more challenging and complex gameplay can easier be made. It's just my personal opinion though, so don't feel forced to do that.

I'm sure he would have felt overwhelmingly forced if you hadn't assured him otherwise.

Highlight on vertical gameplay, eh? That'd turn out some interesting entries. And, if this one was anything to go by, about 10 retractions. :pwned:

In the idea of TWHL MiniVerse, we could make something interesting like an Crash Bandicoot level select portal room where you jump into a sphere with an overlapping image of the world you're about to enter.

I know that making something like this would indeed be awesome, but I also know that with out some rules and limits the results would be the same as in an completely limited competition.

Maybe next time the rules could be -> Moderate world size + It needs to have something funny
I wonder how would a competition focused on making maps similar to Duke Nukem style turn out.

Right, house move is almost done. Intending to set up the study this week at some point. The roof is basically done other than some scripting work and the actual ending credits, but I might wait for your guys feedback before going ahead with end credits.

I'll upload it to unfinished stuff ASAP for testing and feedback.

ALPHA RELEASE!
Grab the alpha version here (38.8MB ZIP archive download) for testing and feedback!

Things to check for:
  • Issues running the mod at all
  • Map errors (ability to break map. etc)
  • Gameplay suckiness (Any area that isn't fun / isn't clear / has no place in the final release)
  • Any other complaints, praise or feedback
Things I'm aware of
  • No official intro yet. Urby is in the lobby but does nothing, kinda like in real life.
  • The final map doesn't end yet. Figured I'd get feedback before scripting the outro.
Where possible, I will ask the mapper to come back to me with an updated version, otherwise I will make the changes myself.

Hot damn! Looking forward to seeing everyone's floors :D

EDIT: So far the only real stumbling block I've had is that the latter half of Malle's is kind of confusing and painful (unless I'm missing something obvious that makes it easier here).

On 2much's floor, I find it kind of odd that you have to murder the security guard to access the security override. Not doing so means you're likely to lose a lot of health.
I submitted my status report the the administrator today about this sign being upside down (not sure if intentional)
The jumping tile puzzle in the riddlers room is too sensitive, especially considering there's a low doorway leading into it, and the room after it has no indications whatsoever as to what to do - even using the tip button, which just relays the previous room's tip.
This guy needs some clip, I was able to climb inside.

Jesse's thing was awesome - took me a while to figure out how it was done, and even longer to figure out what I needed to do to progress. Guess I don't play enough HLDM.
Atom's search was awesomely unexpected. Though so was this bullsquid spawning literally on top of me.
Strider's room was great, and I would love to see more maps like that.

Overall, great release, and I liked the outtro battle - though I was expecting the apache to be less of a fight!

Jeff: It's possible to press the override button without killing the guard, but it's pretty hard to figure out. Though I kinda meant it as a player's choice, kill the guard to get thru the security easier or dont kill the guard and get thru the ending easier.

So far it's looking great! However, as an alpha release bugs were and anticipated and has indeed appeared.

On Jeff's floor, the guy came out but was acting strange and freezing up (assuming spirit, he was trying to run hgrunt code and may have missing animations or something)

On 99's floor, one of the the first scientist (glasses)'s scripted sequence seems to be using a non-existent animation (may want to check the name of the sequence being used here)

The floor after 99's my game crashed with a error about volume being set to 2250

No autosaves beyond dr. orange's floor. I'd highly recommend putting an autosave on every map's stairs.

Just finished playing through it. One or two sections of some floors slow things down (possibly including mine, it's hard to judge when I made it), but overall, quite fun to see everyone's contributions! :D

My only two real problems I had are some parts of Malle's floor being unclear/annoying, and the fact I couldn't find Atom's last card (though that's probably my shortcoming ><), so I had to call on my friend noclip to progress those parts.

I'll go through it again and give a micro-review of each floor soon =)

For the record, this has actually been edited already, as Malle's original submission had the first tile even further away from the door...

Jotted down some notes while playing
Sorry, I didn't keep count of each floor, I hope you'll get what floor I mean in my notes

General:
Great idea, some maps need more player guidance, had to cheat some times

Hard to read names in the list of maps and each maker texture

First floor designed weird, I have to kill the Barney? Had to noclip

4th Floor very laggy with it's (very well done) detail textures

Going thru the big electricity field didn't kill you, seems like it should of

Did you submit your status report to the administrator today?
Pushing e twice would close the door, which I accidentally did

Why did you put a headcrab in a vent just to clip it so you can't go any further?

Didn't know what to do after getting the gluon gun, cheated

Couldn't find last of 4 key cards

Is the game supposted to be over after blowing up the helicopter?
