Currently playing Dishonored. Despite everyone who advised me to play this game insisting on how good it is and the critical metacritics reviews, I find the game boring when not bad.
Its graphical aspect is distinct but I hate it, especially the fact objects we can use are highlighted, making the world anything but convincing.
Musics are rare and otherwise are boring as hell, it looks like they are only here to make an ambient sound.
Furthermore, among the small flaws, I hate the fact that my character do things on his own while I'm still looking through his eyes, like when he takes the little girl of the beginning (which I can't stand for) in his arms or listen to the empress' last words. Talking of which I don't see the point in forcing the player to defeat enemies in order to defend the empress if it's to get, once all enemies are defeated, a cinematic where the player's character is recklessly watching the empress talking, gets knocked down and sees the empress being killed.

Edit: Damn it's impressive how I sound blasé in this post! :P

Star Wars Battlefront
Even though I recognize it's not the greatest nor together game, I still find I'm getting my SW fanboy fix playing it. While I'm not really too jazzed about the whole DLC situation--I don't see myself ever paying for it on principle alone--, you can still play all the gamemodes with people that have, minus playing the new maps of course.

I'll continue to play as long as the PC player base stays strong, and they don't go overboard pushing exclusionary DLC and additional weapon behavior changes..

Nah, you're pretty on point here. Probably one of my biggest peeves in current game trends is control being stolen away from you while you watch your protagonist do something you wouldn't do yourself in that situation.

I like Dishonored, but it's absolutely weakened by modern conventions that don't sit well with it's freedom of approach ideals. A few too many times where your watching instead of doing.

Stick with it, there's a lot more genuine choice in the gameplay then it's opening chapters indicate. Can't do much about the item glow, but disable every marker you can in the options and just explore the maps at your own pace. It's a shame the DLC isn't bundled in with it because it's stronger than the main game.

I am waiting for No Many's Sky to come out.

I have pre-ordered it on Steam already.

My son seems to be even more excited about this game, but I am not sure whether it's possible to surpass my enthusiasm.

I have enough on my plate for now, though, now that a friend sent me Kerbal Space Program as a belated birthday gift on Steam. This will be bad for my education :P

And so I remain marketless because I still haven't spent money myself on Steam in quite a while :P

I wanted to replay the games the "Lytha way" but I quickly abandoned due to the difficulty xD

The "Lytha way" has 3 rules :
1) Play on Expert.
2) Grab all loot.
3) No damage should be dealt (by you, traps or whatever), exceptions are made if it's part of the mission (Cutty in the Cragsleft Prison of Thief Gold and the archers in the rooftops mission of Thief 2 for example).

Optional but add more fun :
  • Don't purchase anything in the Loadout screen.
  • Reduce Garrett's health to 1 HP (in other word, a single damage and you die)
  • No blackjacking
I've never seen someone finishing the games that way, you have to be very good to do that ^^
Posted 8 years ago2016-04-24 13:30:54 UTC Post #329976
Not sure what the rules were exactly, but I once watched an extreme ghost run where the player had to place back every single item exactly where he found them, leaving absolutely no traces. I just stick to expert, but I love the extremes the Thief community go to just because the games let them.

Bump so DiscoStu can post.

I've been playing The Witcher 3. It's a massive game, it will surely take me a long time to finish. I played the previous two games before it as well, 1 was a bit of a slog but 2 was quite good. 3 is on a whole other level, though. There's a huge world, varied quests, some nifty detective stuff, satisfying combat, and they've even paid attention to little inconsequential things such as getting NPCs to match your pace when you're following them. And the graphics are pretty great too.

I've also just finished Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright. Took 70 hours, and that's just the first campaign of three. They've done a great job, but I think I like FE Awakening a little better so far.

Anyone playing KSP?

After countless failed attempts for a round trip to the Mun I'm starting to get frustrated. So far I've mostly managed to get to low Mun orbit and back in one piece with a nicely oversized single stage, carrying a smallish lander that can mostly get down to the surface but doesn't have enough fuel to get back up for the return trip. All my crew is getting stranded up there because the rescue missions are one-way too.

Then I see people go and do this shit.
Posted 8 years ago2016-08-11 04:32:12 UTC Post #331162
On my last computer I had set up a fairly effective Mun ferry system that used very little funds to bring kerbals to the Mun and back.
A kerbal would launch on a small rocket and dock with a station in low Kerbin orbit. They'd then take a munar transfer ferry which would bring them to a station in orbit around the Mun, where they could get into a lander and be brought to the Mun base. They could then go back to the Kerbin station, deorbit and land with parachutes. Since I had ore extraction and refining going on at the Mun base, everything apart from the initial rocket from KSP was free to operate as the Mun station was effectively a fuel station.
The original plan was to bring Kerbals to the Kerbin station with a single stage to orbit spaceplane; if I refuelled that at the station, and landed unpowered on the runway at KSP, then I would even get the funds back for the initial launch. Unfortunately I've never quite been able to get the hang of spaceplanes.

My advice would be to try and go for Minmus first. You'll spend a bit more fuel getting there, but the landing and return are much more forgiving. You can actually get into orbit using only a kerbal's jetpack.

So you had:
A- station in LKO
B- station in LMO
C- A-to-B-only rocket
D- Mun lander with enough fuel to go back up AND extra fuel for the C rocket.
E- fuel-producing Mun base to fill up D

It's brilliant.

@Stu:
Yep. For that save I actually had a few systems in place for that Mun base. One example, probably the most efficient, non skill dependant way to land at a specific location is to drop the periapsis to just above the landing site, then when you get there you cancel any horizontal velocity and drop straight down. The problem is you have to do that first burn from the opposite side of the Mun, so when you get to the periapsis the Mun has rotated and it's now no longer over the landing site. I had a line of marker flags out east of the base for that. If the initial orbit is at 20km, then drop the periapsis over the 20km flag, something like this.
Working for that level of efficiency really wasn't necessary with the setup I had, but I had fun coming up with it.

Just discovered Tomb Raider a few weeks ago, it's a really good game! One of the few, if not the only one, I enjoyed playing almost immediately, whereas for other games such as Deus Ex (HR but especially GOTY), it took me a while to learn to appreciate them. I discovered along with this game how much more pleasant it is to play with a gamepad than with a keyboard and a mouse.
Also, I finished Dishonored (quite a while ago actually), and I was really disappointed by it. For me, it's an average game. It's like a good mod, it's enjoyable, but I wouldn't pay for it. There's no compelling atmosphere. While the graphics and the gameplay are often even very good, the story and the atmosphere are really poor, the music is almost non-existent, and the choices' consequences depend more often on a subjective moral than an objective logic. The ending cinematic (until the singer starts singing) is really well realized and makes me regret that I did not enjoy playing it.
But really, I can't help it being upset about all the flaws this game has: you can almost let the Night Vision always on, and it's so useful you're almost obliged to do so. Yet it really ruins the visual aspect of the game. The game is centered on Emily, a character I really can't stand. The story. The music. Lastly, I don't like the visual style of the characters, and I've heard the art director of this game was the one of HL2. It would make sense since i don't like the visual aspect of Half-Life 2. :P

Just finished AM2R, the Metroid 2 fan remake that Nintendo recently shut down. You can't really fault them for protecting their IP, but considering it wasn't for profit, and what they've done with the Metroid IP lately, it seems pretty mean spirited.

Anyway the game is damn good. Except for maybe a couple of WIP elements, it could so easily be a game from somewhere in the Super Metroid/Fusion era. Some top notch design here.

I played AM2R a few days ago as well. Either I'm rusty, or the game has a more severe difficulty curve compared to the other 2D Metroids, but either way it's still balanced - I got frustrated plenty of times in my first playthrough, but never enough to actually ragequit.

Atmosphere, lore, and gameplay are all well-tuned and exactly what I'd expect from a 2D Metroid game (Except the ice beam. Being used to the ice beam in SM I was not expecting it to be that hilariously and satisfyingly overpowered)

I hope that someone at Nintendo other than their legal department noticed this remake and realized that there's still a massive market for Metroid games, so long as it doesn't center around Samus waiting for Adam to decide she's in sufficient danger to be allowed to use a damn missile.

It is a bit difficult compared to Super Metroid & Fusion, yeah, but it tosses you quite a lot of upgrades in the first few hours. Some of the shinespark secrets are insane. Because it currently doesn't really teach you the intricacies of the speed boost/shinespark I only knew what to do because of Fusion. They could easily add that info into the upgrades screen, however.

Really wish I knew what Nintendo were doing with Metroid, it's quite sad how they're neglecting it. I don't think they even did anything for it's 30th anniversary?

It was a nearly perfect mission. The Mun lander landed and got back to orbit with about 30% fuel to spare. Docked it perfectly to the orbit module, which had just enough fuel to orbit back to Kerbin... and I almost ragequit before I realised I could transfer the spare fuel from the lander into the main rocket. I deorbited successfully and completed the round trip with just 30 units of fuel to spare.

Been playing The Sims 2 again after probably a 10 year gap. I forgot how amazing this game was. It's a gigantic step upwards for the game and it seems that the games only went downhill from it. Don't get me wrong, I still love The Sims 3 for the cool stuff they added, but it was stripped down compared to 2, and 4 is the absolute worst in that regard.

Sims 2 was awesome, but I loved Sims 3 more (nothing like open neighborhood!). But Sims 2 had a certain feel to it that when you played it, it just felt right.

Sims 1 was the bomb though, I still play that on occasion!

I loved me some Sims 2 back in the day. Having loving the original, the leap from isometric faux 3D into full blown actual 3D was awesome. It was nice to have a little more customisation when actually making your sim as well, rather than the handful of prefab heads / bodies.

But yeah, downhill after that. Sims 3 had awesome customisation but bare minimum content (before all the paid expansion packs of course!) and Sims 4 managed to have even less content while backtracking with the gameplay aspects.
