hm since only textures will be judged I don't see a point anymore in creating custom sounds and a small story around still I'm pretty sure that this will affect the judges.. It's just human like to be disappointed when nothing except a landscape is present.

Anyway I have a new idea then... Good luck everyone.

but all of us are going to play against the rules and add a spirit of gameplay!!!

ANY custom models, sounds, textures, sprites, or skies will get you disqualified. Default skies, sounds, models and sprites are fine, but remember they're not what we're judging. Default textures are not okay, as that would go against the point of the competition. Just the compo texture pack and any necessary tool textures.

Please don't ask us to make it any clearer. :<

Judged together, but porting HL2 content over to HL1 would mean it's custom, as it's not part of the default stuff for that engine.

Man this is tough, You gave us no proper detail textures, I can't really make nice pipes or vents or anything of that sort and I only have 1 light texture :S

Be creative with them, that's the whole point. Railings for instance can just be made with the metal texture, which is what I've done :)

I have to say though, the water texture is ugly. I always loved the blueish or more transparent ones. This one's dirty and I have no alternative :D. It doesn't really matter, I won't centre my map around a pool of water anyway.

Uh, pretty sure if you do that you will be eliminated. Like render mode "color" That would give you like a million new colors/ textures to use. You "clearly" cannot do this. Just only use the textures given. Don't try to figure a way around it.

Also, i've noticed that dark water textures actually tend to look better than light ones when rendered with fx ammount set pretty low.

What are you talking about? It's EXACTLY the type of inventiveness we want from this competition! You are free to use any and all entities that you want, in any possible way!

The ONLY limitation of this competition is that you cannot apply textures to brushes that are not from the texture pack provided (with the exception of tool textures, of course).

Anyone wanna share what there map's setting is shaping out to be so far? Mine turned out to be outdoor/indoor lab type place, and many textures are coming in handy in strange ways. func_detail decals are a bit of a pain though! =]

The 'no decals' rule only applies to textures not in the texture pack - you can use decal/overlay entities as long as the decal texture is one of the allowed textures.

Fun fact: Over the few days this compo has been running, Hammer 4 has crashed more often, and in more diverse ways, than it ever has before. Including errors messages I've never even heard of.

I'm really busy in school right now and want to build a tree deck for the fall weather so I may not have time for this one. It's hard to grasp this fact.

Maybe I can just use the textures to render my current architecture project at school and submit it as my entry...

How so?

Source comes with a massive library of models which you can use. Goldsource not so much. Guess us 'We Love 1998' mappers have to get really creative with our brushwork :P

I know that you shouldn't have an issue with complex geometry Dragos.

Hippos have nothing to do with marmalade. As such, allowing a hippo into a marmalade competition would be a bit silly, wouldn't it?
They might, for example, distract people from the marmalade.

This competition is about using marmalade creatively, and that's all.

Ambience is a strong dimension to a map. Look at endless rain from scientist hunt. It wouldn't be the same without it. This comp is unfair all around. This competition favors source mappers strongly. It's common sense, they have more to use at their dissposal along with better graphics. We can get gold to compare to source by using tons of custom content but without it, gold is a joke unless you stick to limited themes. For example, the skies all suck majorly unless you use a xen or morning one.

Oh well, atleast ther'es a competition at all. Good job getting it going so quickly. Just thought i'd mention the truth though. :)

I started writing a fairly long paragraph about why you're wrong, but you know what? I Can't be arsed explaining it anymore. How the fuck can this be made clearer?

This competition is about using a limited selection of TEXTURES creatively. Source having more models, skies and sounds than Goldsource is a non-issue because that is not what is being judged.

Um I was going to make a sort of modern complex building, but not having used hammer for some time i made the rooms two times bigger than I expected them to be, making the player look like some midget in game, So I turned the rooms I created into a kind of "car entrance" with some elevators from it and so on... Other things I can say, well It's based in the desert since I was given sand, and I like making deserts :D

Zeeba: i hear wut you're laying down, but i'm sure the mods will take into account engine limitations/advantages, and weigh entries as appropriate.

Like archie said, try and think of the compo as a fun/creative exercise, not the restrictions of the challenge! Personally, the more restrictions of an assignment, the better i tend to do, because i find being resourceful fun. =)

BTW, i liked your idea about rendering your current architecture project. DO WANT. =))

Exactly what Archie and Captain Terror said. This is the way we've always judged the two engines together. If you don't trust us to be fair about it, I'm sorry.

Source will always have an upper-hand over Goldsource, it's just a superior engine, but we account for this. There's been plenty of times when Goldsource entries have won out over Source entries, because they were just damn good entries.

This competition is purely about the texture pack. How cleverly you use it, and how far you can take it. Sounds and models don't really matter, we're not stopping you from using them. We aren't allowing new ones because that would take the focus away from the textures, which is what everyone should be concentrating on.

Future texture pack competitions will be the same, but maybe with a few more textures than this, and less generic themes.

How about instead of trying to poke as many holes as you possibly can in the rules and constantly pissing everybody off, you all [Who are complaining, not everybody] could have made three fucking maps in the time it's taken you to ask questions that have been answered thirty times already.

Also laughed at doggy, congratulations at putting a comedic twist on the situation, something makes me think that he is going to be the first valid contributor to the competition.
