Yeah sure ... :D
@Urby: thats where the ticket system comes in, id say we do it the same way as last year, its just more games and other people are better at some games so they could catch up in kills if say potatis owns everyone in half-life.
Anyway, so what do you people think: motm or make a level in a month for x-mas ?

I did some searching around and it appears the case that the sff thinkcenter has can only accept low profile cards, so any used last gen high-end cards ( > gtx220) wont fit. I looked at the specs of 6450 (both manufacturers are about the same) and a gt620, judging by spec it should beat nvidia by a hair.
Unless you are willing to cut your case open for used high-er end cards you're stuck with these.
Could you also give the exact model of your thinkcenter ?

I can't imagine the pain you must be going through using integrated graphics. Basically any dedicated card will improve your experience alot.

The cheaper price could be due to lower clock, cheaper components, more units produced etc... The clock is not a big problem, you can always oc it a bit, I oc all my cards by at least 100mhz, though the manufacturer oc editions aren't any better than the standard clock. Custom coolers are a plus, even if you are not overclocking they provide less noise and better temperatures than the reference cards. The bigger issue could be your psu, 280w is quite low (my servers Pentium 4 has a 400w one, the old chips like their power :) ), when playing a game which im sure you will do at some point, if at any point the gpu can't get enough power the system might restart, the increased wear on the psu could cause it to fail after some time.

As for the specs, you should line both cards up and see which one is better, read some reviews.
Also would you be kind to provide links to the exact cards you are looking at?

From what I understand you are running integrated graphics ?
If so I would be running to get a GPU, makes a world of difference.

As for XFX vs Sapphire. I had an XFX GTX260, ran great, never had any problems, now my cousin is using it. All i know is that Sapphire is a AMD exclusive board partner, but it doesn't have a big market share. If i were you id look into "The big 3" that is MSI ASUS and GIGABYTE? who actually own the factories that assemble the boards, so there is more support if anything goes wrong.
BFG had a good no questions asked return policy, basically if your card breaks down they give you a new one, not sure if they are still in business though :D

Best option - just save up for a new system.
If you really want to throw money away then take a look at this
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt640/specifications
the psu might cause problems cause the card does require a bit more power, but the new cards don't suck so much these days so you could get away.
I'm a nvidia fan boy so don't expect me to recommend anything else.
But once again you are just better off saving up for a new rig.

So i had a look at the available maps:
CS 1.6: 6 maps
HLDM: more than enough
CSS & TF2: 1 map each

We can move css, tf2 and flat-life into the same day thus having a 3 day tourney with cs and hldm with their own days.
Who would be interested in hosting a US based server for any of these games?
How about the date, does the weekend before x-mas work ?

Im thinking CS:GO, HL2:DM or something, i know there arent a load of community maps for them, but we could just have a good time blasting each other on some standard ones as well.

Any other ideas ? :)

Triggers are not advanced mapping.
Use trigger_multiple or trigger_once, cycler_sprite to display your model in the world, use a multi_manager if you need to trigger more than one entity, there are tutorials on that here at twhl.
I'm not however sure how you change animations in gs maybe someone else can provide some input on that.

Just copy the files into a folder, and change vhe or your front end's paths to the vhlt exe's, there is an extra .txt file there that the tools take settings from so don't forget to edit that, you have to set the location of your .wad's.

-maxlight "-1" should work , the sign specifies a parameter so it thinks -1 is a new parameter not the option for the -maxlight.

Now that i think about it, i believe that there was a tool that gave you something similar to a hammer grid just to draw lines, but in a sense that defeats the purpose of just using hammer.
I'm not custom with pain.net and gimp, but there should be addons for a grid.

Overviews are done within the game there is a tutorial about that.
As far as sketching, anything that has a drawing capability: photoshop, ms paint, paper and pen.
Unless you have problems remembering ideas for the map you got, plain paper is sufficient for sketches, i used to do it.
For software, personally i dont like the mouse interface to draw, so unless i had a "wacom" tablet (dont know the general term :( ) im using paper, it just feels right.

in In-game map editor Post #310631
I see you don't understand how source/gs works.
Since they are not realtime engines everything has to be precomputed for them (lightmaps, geometry etc...) hence why we compile.
It would be impractical to have an ingame editor, if your pc is slow running the game at the same time would not be the best mapping experience, having to alt+tab every time you need to edit a model, sound, texture would be a pain and would kill productivity.
Doom3 and Quake4 had a built in editor, even though they used dmap(not sure exactly) some elements still had to be compiled.

There is an ingame editor for Portal 2, but is very primitive though interactive :)
I agree hammer is a bit "out of date" compared to other editors, but we got used to it, and so will you.

Btw you can't link images from you pc, upload them to the web first (imgur, imageshack ...)

in Source Limits Post #310584
If the map loads fine and you have no lags then keep building.
Btw the 4096 ent limit is split up into 2 halves: networked and non-networked
both 2048, so if you go over 2k of entities and start having problems that might be an issue.
Also keep in mind that even if the map runs good on your pc, i assume you're running a high end one it might not run as good for other people with slower pc's.
