Don't take my last comment as ungrateful, heh. I just don't think shutting down a site with such a loyal user base is an option. I'd relegate it off to someone else entirely if I couldn't do it. Hell TWHL has a lineage now. Atom -> Seventh -> Penguinboy. I know this site doesn't take as much time to run though.

It had an ok premise, but it went on for too long.

Hell yeah I can!

It's funny you mention it though. I recently figured out that I've been tying my shoes incorrectly my entire life. I did the normal shoe tie, but it always ended up lop sided and uneven. It has worked fine, but it does have the tendency of coming untied. I've learned that you can fix it in the wrap-around/pull through phase simply by reversing the direction that you wrap around the loop. Now my shoes strings are balanced on both sides, and they don't come undone. :P

Seriously, give it a try if you're doing it wrong.

Edit: See http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/slipping.htm with pictures. :D

Well, I'm pretty sure UFO stuff exists. There can't be that many accounts of it for them to not exist.

In which case you could at least make it to anywhere in the solar system in less than half an hour assuming they go ~speed of light.

The material harvesting would make that pretty worth it methinks.

So you know it's called Sledge now.

I don't think you could get away with that alone though. You would have to make it scale, but also allow subdivisions inside of a zoom scale. Sometimes you need to change small details while looking at the big picture.

There's no such thing as truly dynamic radiosity right now. BF3's radiosity generation works off of a simplified map mesh, which is then mapped onto more complicated geometry. Their level designers are effectively creating two versions of their maps. Even so it takes a few seconds to compute, which is still too slow to be interactive. It's great for the level designers though.

Even if truly dynamic radiosity could work it would still be a bad choice. Most dynamic light sources are small lights. Their lighting contributions to a larger scene would be negligible, and so the extra computation is there for no real purpose. The largest contributing dynamic light source I can think of is vehicle lights, or maybe even explosions (but they're short lived).

Another downside is that realtime dynamic radiosity would look terrible unless the light-map resolutions were cranked up really high. If you used dynamic radiosity on a flashlight the light would be fuzzy around where it hit. Also the filtering of the light map texture would cause some weird artifacts if you moved the flashlight around. You would clearly see the individual lightmap texels as the light moved unless the light map resolution was non-computationally high.

Really though most light sources are static. Even if you made an effort to use dynamic lights, most of the lights would still be static. It will happen eventually but it isn't worth it now. I think it will jump straight to ray-tracing though. Re-computing radiosity again and again per frame is more wasteful than pure ray tracing because it lights a ton of unseen geometry, while ray tracing only lights what you can see and what affects it. :P

You would still have to pre-compute visibility. Even then it's a pretty slim chance it could work on a modern game, because radiosity generation time scales up with geometric complexity.

Even so I dont see the advantage to dynamic radiosity. Most of a scene stays static and unchanging anyway, so it is a ton of extra GPU work for barely any graphical difference.

Deferred rendering provides more bang for the buck.

I wonder if it would be possible to crowd-source a game.

It would be hilarious to see a game studio release general concept art, a story (in clear sections), and all of the tools required before making a competition out of it.

They would section out chapters, take entries, pick the best ones, and bridge each of them together. The winning teams would then get royalties for every game sold.

That would be pretty awesome. :P
