I have "fixed" part of my problem, I can make my mod run with cars enabled again. I had to make a desktop shortcut like this:

E:\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe -applaunch 215 -game "e:\valve\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\supercars"

I remembered gmod9 needing a similar fix, so I gave it a go and success!

Hammer is still useless so I can't update my mod, but at least people can play it. I might run my spare PC in offline mode and do it from there :(

Hello.

I ran steam and was shocked and horrified to see HL2MP updating. "noooo, what are they doing?!" I don't know. They don't know either.

I gather there was some sort of update from ep1 to orange box, anyways, vehicles have been completely removed from my (MY) racing mod, and hammer is useless with 4 black screens. I didn't find anything relevent or recent with google, can anyone offer some help on what happened or what I can do to try and fix it.

It's hard to advise on how to optimise that when I can't imagine how it would look...

I've had a few fights with the entity limit and I usually get my way but there sometimes has to be a sacrafice.

maybe you could make a transparent scrolling texture that looks like a glowing light beam (or a set of them) and you may be able to achieve reasonable visual effects with fewer entities.

Do you want a message to pop up on-screen or somewhere in the map? env_message is supposed to make text come up in the map like a sprite, but it will only do it for 1 player so I stopped using it. game_text will bring up a message on screen, in any position and colour.

If you want a message to pop up somewhere in your map, I would create an image of the message with transparency and texture that to a brush.

It always says "not responding", don't worry about it. If you really want to know if it's responding, open the Task Manager and check that vvis or vrad are using most or all of your CPU power. if they are, it's good.

Browse for a skybox in Hammers texture editor that you like the look of and make a note of one of the faces, eg "skybox/sky_day01_01ft"

Go to the Map tab, click on Map Properties and where it says "SkyBox Texture Name" enter "sky_day01_01"

This was done with HL2 in mind, so a CS skybox texture will be different, but the same principle.

I've had an ATi 4870 for about 2 years now. It's very good, pretty much maxes GTA4, and Crysis at 1680x1050. I would reccommend you also download MSI afterburner so you can set up a custom fan-speed profile, so the hotter it gets the faster the fan spins, so you can keep it cool. Anything better seems really expensive.

Hammer absolutely loves quad cores. 100% CPU usage on all cores, plus you have the option to disable one core so you can continue using windows. Not many apps make full use of quadcores. Games generally don't care much for CPUs, they benefit most from graphics cards, so a good dual core would be great for games and cost less, but won't compile HL maps as fast.

in Supercars II Mod (Atari HL2 remake) Post #284404
'lo

** This is a much better version than the last Supercars post! **

Last year I started remaking an old classic, "Supercars II" using the source engine. I had it on the Atari and really liked the gameplay and mechanics and felt it was worthy of a remake. I think the target audience is mostly people who played the original, but I think the game has enough substance to be enjoyed by all, with or without the nostalgia.

This is the 9th beta, I still have a list of things on my "to do" list but it's coming together nicely :). What I really need is the feedback of people who did and didn't play the original, to answer a million questions... Is it easy to figure out? Is the difficulty to high or too low? Is it a good move to mix old and new graphics and should I hang onto original textures to keep the happy theme?

HL2 is required to install this.

in angled walls and windows Post #284365
If you can, you could adjust the wall angle so it goes across 2 squares and up 1 square on the grid, so you can easily align the start of your window on a grid line. If it's the wrong angle, then try across 3 and up 1, or across 5 and up 3... that way it will cross a gridline frequently and you can get nice clean brushwork.

Car? Shooting?

Well, the Supercars Mod for HL2 might be what you're looking for. It has racing, rockets, opponents and upgrades (no collision damage though)

http://www.moddb.com/mods/supercars-ii-mod

Otherwise I can agree with some other folks, Vigilante 8 was awesome, Carmageddon 1 and 2 were good, but different. C2 was my favourite but C1 was very stylish in a sick, twisted sort of way.

Here's a video of Carmageddon 2 for anyone who fancies a flashback:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_MUEGQ94_k

Flatout 2 is a fun racing game with lots of destruction, but no weapons (unless you count insanity behind the wheel as a weapon)

I'm sure there's a few out there, but I can't think of any more.

in A Message for WMG Post #282865
If you want the audio re-activated on your youtube vids that have been sabotaged by WMG commies, claim that it is allowed under law for fair use, and quote

"Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

This may not apply to a review because it is promoting / advertising something, but I'm sure we've all had random fun videos muted, so this can be of use to some people at least.

Works for me

Doh, I wrote a bunch of stuff and closed the tab.

As I was saying earlier, the last video I rendered was 5:27 long at was 200MB. It was 1280x720, 30fps and the total bitrate was 9491kbps (90% quality wmv)

Instead of describing how it looks, I'll show you one of my older videos. there's a balance of dark scenes and light scenes, plus a lot of fast-moving objects. The source video is 8:38 long and 407MB (1280x720, 30fps) but was only 8517kbps, maybe I chose 80/85% quality, I don't remember. Anyway, be sure to click HD 720p and expand/pop-out the vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RevGOjyxRLQ

The original video on my PC is marginally clearer than the youtube version. Hope this helps!

I think you're missing the point, this is a replica of a game from 1991. I plan to remain fairly faithful to the original theme, allowing for a few changes here and there. To change the theme entirely to some generic half-life driving mod may appeal to younger folk who grew up with HL but I believe the original game (from the Atari, not necessarily my mod) has what it takes to stand on it's own 2 feet and can be enjoyed by people who never played the original nearly 20 years ago.

I admit that my target audience are 23+ yr old Atari fans, but when I get round to adding some more 3D goodness maybe a wider audience will appreciate the game mechanics. I've left out a bunch of special weaponry whilst I battle with entity limits and optimisation.

Moar tracks by popular demand!

I have uploaded a patch for your racing/shooting pleasure, an alpha version of the 'hard' series. 7 new tracks for y'all to try out. By 'alpha' I mean they should be fully working, but I haven't added any fences or much detail yet, so it should be all fun!

I will be working on efficiency tweaks and aesthetics next, but I need your input to improve this further and appeal to wider audiences!

Just checking - did you guys know there are 14 tracks on the current beta? 7 tracks in easy mode, another 7 different tracks for medium. I am working on the Hard tracks, they will be a challenge! I will be pretty busy for the next month but hopefully I can get those done during May.

I'd also like to know more about how you found the game, for example what sort of race positions were you getting, and how did you find the difficulty of car handling, AI skills, track difficulty and whether anything was confusing or unclear.

Thanks for your support so far
