in Episode 3 Speculation Post #289421
I stumbled across an interesting article and I have some questions.

Since I didn't find any of those names in the current info_hint from the Source SDK, then they must be included only in the alien swarm dev kit. How come is that possible... I am a bit confused.

And now about speculation.
Given the names
"Ep3 Brain Cover Position", "Ep3 Brain Regenerate Position"
I think Valve is going to redefine what combat means by introducing something new. It's somewhat obvious that some advisors will try to fuck up Gordon's brain, or those entities refer to actual advisor entities. Then Gordon will use some kind of weapon to fuck with their minds.

I've gotta tell you guys, I stumbled on this page while reading the ep2 plot again and I am more curious than ever about where the hl story is going.

I really sense Valve is going to make a big announcement this year.

I remember for halflife1 if you had some vertices that weren't snapping to the grid and they were defining the inside world from the void, you'd almost always get a leak. There was a special compile tool that worked with float variables instead of integers.

Remember the dome I posted in the WIP thread? A lot of vertices are off the grid and source doesn't report any error. I think source compile tools work with float grid points by default.

I'd actually prefer a given map to be transformed. Remember the "texture it" compo? Source let's us be more creative with all the shaders and texture effects.

Well, I am waiting for some suggestions. The area, as you see it, is just at the beginning. How should I improve the area? I must specify that the bottom floor will probably have more connections to other areas. Need ideas for "ceiling"(well, the top part) details. Do some truss supports work in this case? I am also willing to add some env_dustmotes in the ballspawner for a more defined effect.

I am also very sorry to disappoint you, but the basic dome structure is not done by me(I could do it with penguinboy's twister anyway, I is lazy it seems! ). I've taken it from an old halflife free rmf pack. The author is unknown(on my hdd at least).

[edit] Yeah I know those light glows are ugly as crap, I should change them to point_spotlight instead of env_sprites...

Right now I am at school and I can't get a grasp of everything that is discussed here. Since I am a very active member of this community(for 4 years now) and always will be, I am a bit interested in those positions. So here goes:

My application to Vault Moderator\MOTM Moderator
(I'd prefer "Vault Moderator")
  • I can basically review any kind of map, other than L4D/L4D2. I own: Half-Life, Half-Life2, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, HL2:Ep1, HL2:Ep2, Portal, Garry's Mod, Opposing Force and CS:S.
-although I don't own CS 1.6, I'd still be able to review them in HL. I will, on the other hand, try to discourage the making and posting of cs 1.6 maps here on TWHL. There are probably millions of cs 1.6 maps out there, so investing any kind of effort in cs 1.6 mapping is practically useless. Yes, I myself started mapping in cs 1.6, but there was nobody to guide me at that time. If I started with HL mapping, I would probably have more mapping experience by now.

-I have some random reviews of some maps(comment reviews).

-my grammar and spelling is, I think, adequate. I often use dictionaries when writing some important stuff.

-I still am an active mapper in a way or another

-You'd have the most eastern map reviewer around here, if there's no russian members on the site! :D

-I've played/finished other FPS games, not just the hl series

-having this volunteer job is a chance to improve my english and relationships with you guys.

-I might provide video reviews.

This is a good "wet wall" effect. I will specify that I used Gimp and a normal plugin for it. It's almost like the photoshop plugin. The only problem is that it's difficult to work with alpha layers in GIMP, but once you learn it, it's easy. Also, as I read in a tutorial here on TWHL, after generating the normal map, I have to increment the red and green channel by 1.

I just found a nifty program that integrates withing Hammer. It automatically converts source units to metric\imperial system.

This is the Hammer Units Conversion Tool. This should be quite useful if anyone attempts to recreate real architecture. Haven't tested the program yet.

Heh, kdunivan, that link should be a pleasure for Dimbark :).

Also, an important issue. I didn't thought of this at first, but this thread will probably rapidly be growing, and members will get confused.
I propose that anything that is posted to this thread(that worths something) should get posted to the wiki. Of course, we need a new page, like "Source tips", or "Mapping Tips". Then, we can make some categories and post every mapping tip into its apropriate category.

Quick Tip: If you want your maps to be decompile protected, just add a keyvalue called no_decomp with a value of 1 to any entity.

I read that it's still possible to decompile maps which VMEX says are decompile protected. You have to download some program called EntSpy and delete that keyvalue, and you can decompile it.

Since I often discover content that is not centralised (to some kind of mapping site), I believe it is a wise idea to have topic about that. I am not the only person that randomly discovers cool thing on different forums and sites, I hope we will populate this thread with useful things.

The problem is that some titles have no meaning, or do not describe the content as it should.

For example, This video showing to to make better cliffs does not a have descriptive title at all.

I also found this wonderful texture pack on Interlopers, and I think I am going to use it:

I am using the reference Archie and Strider posted. I wasn't convinced at first, but it does change a bit the atmosphere. Actually it makes it even more warm.
If you're trying to power a lift, you'd use a generator, not a random collection of capacitors.
Fair observation, but what if it's a big lift and you suddenly need a big power consumption to put it at work? Besides, they add detail. It's not like I added chairs on the walls for detail, you know.
Just to add my two cents, it needs windows.
It is underground.

[edit] Quick question: How can I display an image from a camera or something like that on a fancy combine monitor? Do you know any tutorial about this?

Thank you very much for the suggestions guys, I will take them into consideration. Though remember, this is a WIP thread. That's a screenshot of something not finished yet.

Explanations now.
What are the posts for? The times I've seen posts spread out like that is simply to prevent vehicles from entering an area
Exactly.

All those electrical things, capacitors, pipes(there is some red pulsing light near the pipes in the middle but you can't see them) are supposed to power up the lift. Which, in HL2 terms, is simply huge.

I am sorry I will say this but I have to use yellowish light. I am adding variety yes, but I want a nice warm athmosphere there to give the player a "safe" feeeling. Also, the light beams are there but the light isn't, you think? No, it's just that "200" is not enough intensity, and I have to make it a bit brighter.

The problem is that I don't want to show you all. After all, a good impression is a first impression, and that first impression I want to come from the map itself not from screenshots although I can't resist posting wip screens here :D. Trust me, that chamber actually feels and looks a lot better than in the screenshot :P.

I am also trying to use some custom textures. I've read a thread on Facepunch and saw that many players would like less "default gmod" looking. I am currently using a custom grass texture(was hard to make). Since making my own textures is a bit time consuming and I am not a texture artist, can you guys recommend me some resources like this? Are there any sites that host vtf. quality textures, possibly high res?

One more note. This is a gmod map. Gmod maps aren't supposed to be detailed, but this is one of the areas that are of central interest, so I do accept all of your comments, as it will be more detailed.

The 2 blue screens you see in the distance are 2 of 6 controls welded to the lift.

I started working on a new gmod map. Why do I do gmod maps? Because I just don't have the skill to design an SP map yet. And it lets me explore my creativity without adding a story. I plan on doing this map a bit more interesting. It will be named gm_abysslift, for an obvious reason.
User posted image
No, the whole map is not a lift(the screenshot is just a "teaser"). But it is the central ... attraction, if I can say so.
For the moment, I only planned 2 "floors": one at the top, and one at the bottom. But I might add one at the middle. and different small room along the path of the elevator. The hard part is now designing the lift controls.

The problem I am currently facing is that the controls are moving with the lift, and I don't know if it's a good ideea to include controls at the main floors or not.

Btw blitzkrieg, the lighting looks cool in your map.
