in Smart Asians Post #259683
I've read time and time again that, at least in Japan, test scores are so high because the federal education system focuses almost exclusively on preparing students to take said test.

Supposedly its because when Asians that are used to strict standards like move to the US, they retain those standards. Then they have a kid, and the child is taught to live by the same standards, and it goes on for a few generations. At least, that seems to be the popular answer. Its always worth noting that this is obviously why the "smart asian" generalization exists in the first place.

I know, for a fact, that the current HL client supports detail textures. I've been experimenting with them on my HL for the past week or so, just to be sure.
So this is pretty baffeling if you really have everything set up the way you do. All I can suggest now is for you to re-extract the DLLS, both client and game, and overwrite the ones you're using in your mod to be sure you're using the same ones that vanilla HL uses.

The FGD you use wouldn't matter, by the way. The FGD is only something Hammer interprets, and has no effect on the compiled map. EG: if you use use the CS FGD to put an m4a1 in a Half Life map, when you load it, the engine will just shrug it off, because the entity doesn't exist.

Is this HLDM or a mod? If it's a mod, when was the mod made? If it's an older mod, it probably doesn't have detail texture support.

Converting the islave to a player model would also mean recreating all 100+ animations to work with that skeleton system.
That's absurd, you don't have to recreate anything. You can import the mesh, line it up with a normal player's placeholder pose, and assign the vortigaunt's mesh to the player bones. Its the same method people use to convert things like custom CSS animations to DOD and such.
I can have this done for you late Sunday/Monday, but right now I'm away from the dorm, and don't have access to my desktop PC.

Yeah but it would also be a mayor downfall for the Chinese economy since USA is such a great customer. They'd never do it
Its always possible that they find a better buyer.
Even with the population, China doesn't have the kind of military power to stand on its own. But it still seems that whoever is China's biggest buyer, is the owner of the manufacturing world.
I'm not nearly informed enough to make these calls, though, so I'm not going to dive any deeper.

China holds the manufacturing world by the balls anyway. They've been on that throne for decades. If China pulled exports to the US, that would be the end of it.

Let's wait and see. Everyone is asking the same questions about Obama, as if they can be answered right now.

I tried this in the past, and it causes screeching plus they are usually out of sync with the others. Not to mention, you can still hear the sounds spinning around you quite clearly when you turn, unfortunately.

If its for CS or HLDM or something, then the workaround I'd recommend is to put a hollow box either at the very top or very bottom of the mapping grid (center it, though), and place your sound in there. There's no way to get rid of this without using Spirit's FMOD, but you can put it far away enough so that it sounds like it never changes.

in Modeling Colors: Emmisive, diffuse ... Post #258858
Those are only for in-program effects. Milkshape has those 4 too.

Emissive: The color and magnitude of which specified areas of the model are self-illuminated. If its cranked up all the way, the model won't have any shading.

Diffuse: In Milkshape, its the transparency level. But I think its different for a lot of modelling software. The "diffuse map" is the base texture without bump maps or specular maps applied, so I would guess it has something to do with textures. If you don't have any applied, you should apply a test texture to see.

Specular: How light is reflected and refracted when it hits the model. You can do a lot of things with specular, but usually its used for things like "phong gloss".

Crap, sorry about never getting back to this.
Giving them more time didn't do the trick, but trigger_changetarget turned out to work fine.

Apparently there was another problem that I didn't know about causing "process lag", so I assumed the trigger_changetargets were to blame.

Thanks anyway.

Myspace and chatrooms are one thing, but anonymous forums like us do teach the youngsters a very different method of communication than standard public conversations. I guess you could say that forums have their own ways of talking just like the cultures of other countries.
Nonetheless, a great article.

in Vac Bands Post #258736
VAC is a bit on the unfair side, in my own humble opinion. At worst, you have some fun for a bit in one game, and and one day your entire account gets blacklisted forever. Cry me a fucking river, but hacking can be really, really fun. Anyway there's nothing that can be changed, so blah. You're fucked, and should have been more careful. What's done is done.

You can play in your own dedicated server over Steam. Your PC will take hit if its not a power PC, but hey, it's still more reliable than a listen server. If the server uses the same interface as other Valve games, you should be able to disable VAC when you pick the game.

Playing games like that casually and grinding them till' you're perfect at everything are two different things. I think the latter is a waste.
As is trying to get perfect aim in FPS,or working on micromanagement for RTS, or grinding levels in an RPG. The only reason people don't bitch about these things is because they've been around so much longer, buts its the same concept.

You have to understand that people who play rhythm action games simply do not want their games to be real-world emulators. They do not see games as alternatives to things we could do, but can't.

You don't play Guitar Hero to pretend you're playing a real guitar (I certainly hope you don't... Saw) just like you don't play DDR to learn how to dance. You play it because its fun in its own right.

in Trouble with multisource Post #258592
I want to create a makeshift random teleporter with 6 possible exits.
To do it, I'm trying to toggle between 6 trigger_teleports. I'm using a multisource for each trigger, and a looping multimanager to control the toggle.
But the teleporters are all disabled, all the time, and trigger_changetarget is far too process-intensive to be a practical solution.

Tell me what I'm doing wrong:
-6 trigger_teleports named tele1, tele2... with masters set to master1, master2...
-6 multisources named master1, master2... with no global state master set.
-1 multithreaded multimanager triggered on startup with these properties:
Name: changeme
master1 - 0.25

master2 - 0.50
master1 - 0.50 (to disable tele1 and make way for tele2)

master3 - 0.75
master2 - 0.75

master4 - 1
master3 - 1

master5 - 1.25
master4 - 1.25

master6 - 1.5
master5 - 1.5
changeme - 1.5

master6 - 1.75 (coincides with 0.25 seconds after relooping, thus tele6 is disabled when tele1 is reenabled)

The actors for Kirk and Spock look a little young to fit the bill, but I reserve judgement.

I actually didn't know this movie ws being made until I saw it listed under Simon Pegg's IMDB profile last week, and saw that he would play Scotty. I loled.

In any case, I hope its fun. I quite like Star Trek.

I thinks its actually just the order. The names can be different, as long as the bones are in the same order. But when you let Milkshape rename your bones on import, it actually reorganizes them too.
If you open a reference SMD in Wordpad and rename some of the bones without changing the order, I think it will still compile.
Edit: or I could just be completely wrong.

Blender and XSI are both powerful, free modelling software, but also very confusing compared to MS3D. Plus, they don't have default support for Half Life file types. If you just want to work with Half Life, you might be better off just buying Milkshape. Ask your parents for it or something.
