lol... I thought I was the only person to map for HL without finishing it, yet I have been proved wrong.

Do not go crazy at me, I am playing through it. The thing is, I played CS, mapped for CS, then suddenly thought it would be more fun to map HL. That was when I started playing. I am currently up to the start of 'Interloper', so I am right near the end.

And coolfat! Never say I hope you die to anyone! That is shameful... You say 'I hope you die in one of the things in the Worst way to die thread!'

Sitting in a room made completly of glass. Outside of the glass is just food, GOOD food. You sit in the room, and are left to sit there and starve to death, with real good food right in front of you. You ask for water, so you can kind of survive. And they give you water, they give you lots. They fill up the entire glass room up with water, up until there is about 10 cm of air, and all the rest water. But this isn't drinking water; this is salt water. Really Cold Salt Water. You you are there, hungry with food, thirsty with salt water, and drowning in freezing cold water. But then, they see you freezing, so they turn on the heater, or should I say: The Stove. They boil the water, almost burning you to death, until 75% of your body is fully burnt. They then take you out of the glass room, and into a new room. It has a TV. You watch the TV, which is playing pornographic images. You 75% burn penis becomes erect, and you see two men come into the room, and feed you Viagra. They then pull out a knife, and slowly chop of parts of your penis, 5mm at a time. They then slit open your scrotum, and make your eat your testicles. They then chop off your toes and fingers. Then hands and feet. Then Arms and Legs. Then with only your head and body left, you are placed back into the glass room, to either starve, drown, or freeze to death.

Pretty Gruesome hey!?

And use punctuation when asking things! You will be taken a whole lot more seriously.

There is a way to do it, but as Seventh said, your a bit too much of a learner to go around doing these things. You need a program called 'Wally' which allows you to make your own .wad files (textures), in which you can make your signature, save it as a wad file, and then add into hammer.

If you use Custom Textures, make sure you -wadinclude them (Needs ZHLT Compile Tools [there is a tutorial on this site about how to do wadincludes]) or include the .wad with the map if you submit it.

I wouldn't like that though, as I'm sure many people wouldn't. Map submitting works fine for about 99% of us, and if we get a different server, It might stop working for us, and for 1% of the people that can't currently submit maps, it isnt worth the risk IMO.

I don't think he is talking about that.
im making a wad file and was wondering how you make a custom light emitting texture
To my understanding, I think he means like a fade texture kind of thing. A custom light emitting texture. All you do is make a brush coming from the light, and make it an appropriate texture, something like fade texture or white would look best. Then tie that to func_illusionary, with its render mode set to additive, and its FX ammount set to a number, depending on how transperant you want it to be [0-Nothing 255-Not transparent at all]. I would use about 80ish.

It won't be that easy monkeychow. The pow button can be a func_door, with its compass thing set to up. But I can't work out how we will get the Pow button to knock all of the monsters upside down. And because It is a rather low detail map, I think we should focus a lot on making it more interesting, either with a background, or more detailed textures, just to make it look not so boring. Of course we will make that map EXACTLY how it is, for people who like old school stuff, then we will release a different version, with more detailed stuff.

And I think a lot of detail should go into those pipes. They look very circular, and I think we should keep them looking that way. Square cornered pipes wouldn't fit the level IMO.

So all you did was put lights in? Chances are, you accidenlt placed the light too high, and a part of it is sticking out into the void, creating a leak.

Check your compile log, find the error, then visit tommy14's page. If its a leak, you can fix it by making the light in the room, without it sticking out into any part of the cieling.

Hope this helps :)

I understand what your saying, Captain P.
Texturing: 5 Fun: 5 Architecture: 4 Gameplay: 3 Overall: 4
But if you had that, you wouldnt need to make massive long comments, as the rating will speak for itself. So you could simply say 'I enjoyed playing this map' or 'Good work. Keep it up!' and then just give it a rating.

They really don't look fine to me. Like in yours where the little CS crosshair looking things are :D . Its all...... weird, like you edited it in paint and it stuffed up the quality of the pic.

And mine, around the speach bubble and around weebl's head, it also looks like I edited it in paint, which I didn't. I used photoshop 7 and saved it as a .jpeg, with the quality set as 10! It looks fine on my computer, yet it is low quality with TWHL. Maybe it reduces the size on all of our avatars or something, its just with the pink background you notice it most.

Awesome!" "Great!" "Good work!" -- doesn't tell me whether it's worth the time to download and try out
Good call there. It also doesnt help if you are the author of the map and you wish to know what to improve on.

And make it so you can only rate if you comment! Kind of Like SnarkPit, just a bit different.
Example:

Good Map!
Texturing: 5 Fun: 5 Architecture: 4 Gameplay: 3 Overall: 4

That way you know what to improve on, which in this case is architecture and gameplay.

And on the topic of the MV. I think screenshots must become compulsory. I hate opening up the MV and seeing 'No Screenshot' images everywhere. If they try to post a map with no screenshot, a message should come up; 'Error: No screenshot Included. Press F5 in game to take a screenshot, and it will be saved in your half-life folder as "mapname0000". Open it up in an Image editing program, and save it as a .jpeg file. Click here to go back.'.

Does anyone agree with me on any of these suggestions?

Well mouse lag would be caused by running a compile with -full or having a slow computer.
Mouse Lag. Open up task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and you will see something taking all the CPU. Most likely hlvis.exe, or maybe hlrad.exe, depending when you decided to close hammer.

Hope this helps solve your lag problem.

About your long compile times. If this is your final version, you may wish to compile full. If you are merely playtesting it, run vis on fast, and experiment with the settings. My abandoned map (which is relatively big) spent half an hour compiling, with a full compile, on my P4 2ghz computer. You have to be patient. Go sit down, watch TV, do something, and just keep checking the compiling every 5 or so minutes.

And whatever you do, do NOT skybox your entire map. Skyboxing is bad. If you still do not understand what skyboxing is, I will tell you: Creating a massive sky brush all around your level, then hollowing it. It makes the compile tools render so much more stuff, and makes compile times go crazy.

Hope this helps you out. :)

Yes, but for realism, breakable would be loads better. Since when does land just disappear.

I only use func_wall_toggles as clip brushes. If you want a cliff edge to fall, use breakable. It really depends what you want to use, and what surroundings/setting the map is in.

The reason I told you to do that Command stuff was because, your bsp files are being created, but are not being put in the correct folder. You might want to do this manually.

Search your PC for juppz.bsp. When you find it copy it into your maps folder, and there you have it; your map. :D

Vis, Rad and stuff should be in you VHE folder. Wad files however, I think they are in the gcf files. You might want to keep the old wads as a backup in completely different folder.

Go to expert mode. Click New. Click In the 'Command' box, and click 'Cmds' and select Copy File. Then in parameters type '$path$file.bsp $bspdir$file.bsp'.

Do it again, (New, Cmds, Copy File) but with these parameters, '$path$file.pts $bspdir$file.pts'.

Now move both of them above the $game_exe part.

Bah, Then I am not sure what you can do.
BTW, is it easily possible to get a screenshot of a map that won't run?
No, but you can get a screenshot from inside hammer. Click on the 3d view and make it 3d texture. Click on one of the brushes in 3d view and press Shift+X. It will make the 3d view as big as it possibly can. Press Print Screen (on your keyboard, next to F12 if you can't find it) and paste it into a Image Editing program (paint, photoshop, etc.) and then crop it so all you can see is the 3d Texture Part. It should come out looking like in game, without lighting and stuff though.

You can use squares. If you get an 'Invalid Structure' error, go to that Invalid brush, and clip it into 2 triangles. Press Ctrl+X until both triangles have white lines, then fix it up so it looks normal.

If you want very complex cliffs/terrain, then it is best to use the triangle technique on all squares.

Get ZHLT Compile Tools. Google for them. The ones you are currently using are intended for quake, although they still work with Half-Life. ZHLT replaces the tools you are using now, and instead of qrad (q for quake), its hlrad (obviously for HL). It replaces all of them, I was just using rad as an example.
