You should replace them with coloured sprites or custom textures, then. The Too many light styles on face error is not one to ignore.

Yikes! Did you not glance at the compile log before running?

Actually, I'm assuming that if you didn't see the hundreds of "TOO MANY LIGHT STYLES ON FACE" errors, you were compiling with no RAD, and therefore probably fast vis as well?

You can pretty much guarantee 90% of rendering issues such as items becoming invisible are due to a fast VIS compile.

Hmm... Dunno... Of course, there is an easy test.
A sentence like:
"I found this tutorial over at Polycount." just flows off the tongue.
Same with
"I posted about my vtf problem on Interlopers."

"I found this map over at Worldmakers." It doesn't seem as nice.

Oh New Vegas, why can't I resist your charms? After 95 hours of clocked Steam game time, after defeating you 3 times, why do I keep coming back?

Oh yeah, because I'm still finding new things that make me laugh out loud and present new challenges. The massive modding community also helps keep the game fresh. Other developers should learn from this. 95 hours I've played New Vegas, and it cost me ?25.
The latest Medal of Honor? Almost ?50 and has 4 hours of gameplay.

Oh, and every so often I take screenies in 1920 x 1080 for wallpapers. Full selection here.

I don't have much use for prefabs, because I know my way round Hammer and can make my own with my own textures which I know will fit, but what I could really use is royalty-free goldsource models.

Someone linked a massive archive in the shoutbox a few days ago, but only a couple suited my needs. Anyone else know where to find some? The selection on the Snarkpit is embarrassingly small.

Yes, so it's a competition for both engines again.

Also, a rule like you must use every texture at least once might add to the challenge.

The textures will have to be made with Source in mind originally, too. That means normals/ssbumps, and spec maps (if necessary) need to be made with the diffuse. Easiest part is shrinking them down for the WAD, heh.

I sucked at Goldsource. Moved to Source for 4 years. Back on goldsource now for TC, and people seem to like what I can do now... Well, everything I learned to do now, I learned from Source.
Make of that what you will.

It's totally off topic, but I can't help myself when Joebama makes it so clear that he still thinks Goldsource is a better engine in the literal, technical sense.

This is actually somewhat depressing.

Dimbark & psilous - open Soup Miner's last two screenshots by clicking the "open in a new window" link below them. The difference is more blatant that crollo's unimaginable and apparently intentional idiocy.
For such an aged game I fail to see the purpose in setting a higher resolution, it doesn't make it look particularly better
If you're not trolling then words don't come close.

This is a photo from page 1 of Dimbark's resolution running on my secondary monitor:
User posted image
It does not take a computing degree to know that if that tiny image is stretched across a decent sized monitor it will look awful.

Dimbark:
Resolution is the number of pixels occupying your screen space. Yours is set to 640 x 480, and to put that in perspective: the iPhone, with its screen smaller than a playing card has a resolution of 960?640.
User posted image
So you have less pixels on your normal-sized monitor than a phone.
Because of that, the image you are seeing is upscaled and stretched, resulting in a massive loss of quality. Put a phone next to your monitor and compare the screen size. Surely it makes sense that your larger screen should have more pixels?
640 x 480 is the sort of resolution supermarket cash registers had 5 years ago.
1024 x 760 is the absolute minimum by today's standards. Hell, even my wee granny is running 1152 x 864

It's not necessarily 0, that's just an easy number to work with because you can easily see when something has been knocked out of alignment that way.
If you have terrain made of multiple faces (so any terrain, then) and one of those faces has its texture alignment set to X35 while the rest of it is set to X0, then you end up with a massive seam as seen here:
User posted image

Also, Dimbark, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Even putting aside the fact that playing HL at such a low resolution is rubbish, showing screenshots at that resolution is pointless. It's difficult to get any sense of how it'd be to play at a normal resolution.
1024 x 768 is the absolute minimum by today's standards, and as we discovered in the other thread, you easily have a computer powerful enough to run HL at that, if not more.

Approx total memory is the onboard RAM on the video card, not the computer's main RAM, ATDestroy.

So while there's nothing "seriously wrong" with that, it is a pretty slow video card. That might be the problem if the game is having to call upon all 2gb of his RAM to compensate for the lack of RAM on the video card. I'm not sure enough of how these things work to say definitively.

You're being far too harsh. Fail miserably? Not at all. It's perfectly playable. Don't like the controls? Re-bind them.

Just Cause 2, I don't really want to comment on. I own the game, but I haven't been able to play past saving the dude from the hotel right at the very start because they voice acting is so unimaginably fucking bad. Like, painfully bad, and for you to have commented on GTAIV's voice acting earlier and then recommend Just Cause 2 is pretty backwards.

edit:
Yes, Crollo, they do. I'm also pretty certain there's an 'always run' option in GTAIV as well. .

Haha, sorry, I didn't mean for you to take the mac comment seriously. That was just me having a go :3

I have played Uncharted and I enjoyed it. It is a good adventurey shooter, but you can't seriously compare GTAIV to it. You just seem to be entirely missing the point of GTAIV. It's not meant to be played like Uncharted - a series of mostly linear encounters. It's meant to be messed around in. They deliberately make it ridiculously easy to lose your wanted level (go to safehouse and sleep) so that you can fuck about as much as you want and do generally awesome shit as a nice break between story missions. They then tried to expand on this with friendship maintaining which was a dreadful call, but you can just ignore them. Only problem is you miss out on some sometimes genuinely hilarious dialogue if you do.
Going back to the earlier mentioned Mafia 2, I think you'd actually prefer it to GTA, because it has a big sandbox city which then offers NOTHING AT ALL TO DO IN IT other than the story. The shooting in it is spectacular, especially if you have a physx enabled card and it's a game you could reasonably compare to Uncharted. Both good, fun, solid shooters but absolutely nothing more.
I prefer my games to take themselves less seriously for the most part. Exceptions being the HL series, Mass Effect series and Dragon age, all of which are held expertly together by gripping narrative and extremely identifiable and likeable characters.
Uncharted and Mafia 2 are more like Mirror's Edge in my view - they're great to play through once, but they had no lasting effect on me and I'm probably never going to play them again.

tl;dr:

GTAIV doesn't take itself seriously. Neither does the Fallout series. If you accept that and just enjoy messing around with them, you'll find a great deal of enjoyment.

Huntey's top 5:
1. Fallout 3/NV
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Half-Life 2 & Eps
4. Dragon Age
5. Bad Company 2 (Online only. Singleplayer was a bad joke.)

Woah, woah, woah.
Hold on, there.

The shooting is pretty awesome. Gunshot impacts look great with the euphoria physics and it's damn satisfying.
The driving is pretty good, actually. Want an example of bad driving? Play Mafia 2.
I've never had floating car problems, and it runs absolutely fine on my PC with max settings at 1920 x 1080. (And I mean max everything. View distance, detail distance, night shadows - everything.)
And the voice acting in GTAIV is also nowhere near atrocious. It's not great, but it's damn sight better than a lot of games out there. Try Just Cause 2 for atrocious.

Edit:
Just a thought - don't you use a mac? That probably explains everything.
