The rotating effect is much better than just a toggled texture, kdunivan.

The reason your google search came up empty, 23-down was probably because you're referring to them as posters. The term commonly used is "rotating billboard"

in Seaching for a Coder for Counter-Strike Post #279134
Actually, I was a big fan of Sven Co-op back in the day.

Just sayin' L4D is effectively coop Counter-Strike. That's how it started. The devs played CSS versus bots just armed with knives.

And why not just play Sven Co-op then?

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but making a mod for cs 1.6 just isn't something people are willing to invest their time in these days. A very, very small number of people would play it, and as such no coder is going to bother wasting their time on it.
No offense to yourself; just laying down the facts.

can't see the connection between MotM and the Industry vs. fair use media.
Several recent MotM videos have been disabled on Youtube.
but if I ever have one and use it, I would always include a notice reminding that whatever media I use falls under fair use definition in my videos.
Yeah, that won't stop it being disabled.

I buy my music. All of it. I have a library with around 3000 tracks.
Probably less than 10% of those weren't purchased by me. I agree that artists deserve to be paid. You're missing my point.

TWHL, the time for action is now.
Many of you are wondering where the MotMs went. Many of you have voiced concerns that the reviews you deserve aren't being made.
Let me assure you that they are in fact being made - but they are being sabotaged by someone who hates you. You, the every day media-savvy punter.

TWHL, many of you have projects - the content of which can only be fully appreciated through the form of AV. Many of you do not own servers with the bandwidth required to share said AV content with the world. Many of you turn to youtube.
Many of you are then aghast to find your audio, or in some cases entire video disabled due to Copyright infringement.

TWHL, the time has come to ask not ourselves, but the people responsible just how much bullshit they think we are willing to put up with. We must ask how using <15 seconds of a song constitutes stealing in this new media world.

The suits behind such decisions to remove your videos are living in the past. They have no fucking clue how the new media world works and they are TERRIFIED. They resort to extreme measures because they are under the delusion that if people can view a video using 15 seconds of one of their label's songs they will lose money. In reality - the exact opposite is true.

In a way it's free advertising.

The current chart toppers have one thing in common - the music video is available for FREE on youtube. It is these companies who have embraced New Media who are succeeding and companies like (but not exclusively) WMG are falling behind.

And even if making their own stupidity apparent to them isn't enough; I argue that they are in fact abusing US copyright laws themselves.
Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

Now I say that a non-profit video which has been painstakingly edited for hours in time with a particular excerpt from a song is fair. fucking. use.

Up and coming directors and film makers are being denied the opportunity to show their work and get noticed by the industry. They don't have access to professional music recording equipment - they can't afford to buy the rights and pay royalties. These are non-profit videos and they deserve to be treated as such.

(tl;dr: start here)
TWHL, I need your help.

I want you. You and your family. You and your family and your friends and your friends' families.
I want you to record you giving WMG the middle finger - to be used in a MadV style compilation video.
So far I have several hundred college students agreed to be recorded from my area. I want more.
Pick up your webcam, your mobile phone or your video camera and give WMG a one-fingered salute.

I'm worried people are just guessing who one of the passwords in this case belongs to. This is the problem with only being able to use new accounts (and tuna, who donated his account to science.)
You knew which ones to try it with, and thusly didn't have to do one of the trickier parts of the investigation.

here's the official walkthrough. Avoid if you haven't solved yet.

SPOILERZ

PART A
Clue 1: EVO's "HL1 map" thread. I reply in it, linking to the In the Beginning Tutorials. Click it.
Clue 2: Tuna has commented the In the Beginning tutorial linking to his recently uploaded map. Paste it.
Clue 3: Download the .zip, extract and open the .map in Hammer. It's empty. Check the .map in notepad? Oh my days, a password related to Monkey Island!

PART B
Clue 4: Evo also has a link in his Bio. It leads to a journal made by me many moons ago. The journal mentions an easy code to remember.
Clue 5: Supermatt mentions that BiscuitNinja likes Monkey Island. Connection to earlier found password is formed.
Clue 6: Logging in to BiscuitNinja's account, you find out that Billybop has the answer.

PART C
Clue 7: Supermatt, like so many before him also has a link in his bio. It leads to his very aesthetically pleasing website.
Clue 8: He mentions checking the source code. Doing so will reveal another password - Invader2003, and states that it belongs to the person with the answer.
Clue 9: Logging in to Billybops account reveals a private message from BiscuitNinja with the answer in code. Refer back to Huntey's journal.

If at any point during the investigation you find yourself logged in to any of these accounts (which you may) please don't ruin it for everyone. Do not delete any of the person's bio information or anything else for that matter.
Do not post while logged in as anyone but yourself.

I've come up with a way to entertain you, the often very intelligent community of TWHL.

The goal is to give me the answer. The first one to post the answer in this thread is the winner.

I may make more of these if they prove popular, but this first one is just quite small and not too tricky.

Good luck.

Round 3 has begun 25th Feb 2012

Same rules apply - If you find yourself logged in as someone else during the course of your investigations, please don't remove things or post as that user. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else!
First one to PM me, Archie, the answer wins.
The answer is a two-word name."

I very much doubt you've been "hired" considering you have no previous experience in TFC mapping. I've been doing this for a lot longer than you and I've only been paid for it twice.

As for your question, all you have to do is keep in mind that multiplayer maps have to flow. It's very important not to have any dead ends. Every route has to be a potential escape route, a potential way round to flank, etc.

HDR is High Dynamic Range lighting. It creates "realistic" glows around bright light sources and adjusts the players' brightness to compensate for dark areas (and darkens bright areas) realistically like a human eye reacting to light and dark.
It can only be used with a HDR enabled skybox.
Play HL2's mini-expansion "Lost Coast" with developer commentary enabled to learn more about HDR.

Cubemaps are entities placed in Hammer (recommended in every room at player-height) which define the reflections of the materials used in that room by using the "buildcubemaps" command in-game.

The grid can be customised with grid line emphasis etc in 2D options in Hammer.

As for full black - are you using prop materials (get used to that word instead of "textures" by the way) on world geometry? When browsing materials, note that prop and model materials are usually pretty clearly defined in their paths/names.
