Anybody: Have you gotten the Gmax tutorials to work? I downloaded them and the help files from Turbo Squid, but having trouble displaying them.

I copyied the tutorials folder to my Gmax directory, but no joy. The Help files worked fine though.

Wow SpaG, the amount of detail in your last--non-error--AK is astounding... Looks like I'll have to redo mine :)

Btw, I think it looks better without the meshsmooth. Or maybe just apply it to the parts that ares supposed to look soft like: buttstock, foregrip, maybe the handle.

Pepper: If this opinion is fundamentally wrong, from the perspective of an experienced modeler--that's you--, please slap me with the ignorance stick :P

I'm going to stick to box modeling for a while as per your recommendation. It looks way faster/easier, which definitely works for me. I'll post something as soon as it becomes respectable...

SpaG: Your Ak looks pretty sweet! Pepper will make modelers of us yet! :)

K. Some questions about Gmax. I thought I would post them here, rather than PMing, because maybe someone elses is having the same issues.

Alright, I'm using the method described in Model A Weapon tutorial, except of course, using Gmax, not Milkshape.

Here's what I've done so far:

-Use the line tool under shapes, to draw the outline of the bolt housing/handle/clip of my weapon--M4 carbine.

-Then edit mesh modifer and extrude it.

-Then I clone the hole thing, move it on only one axis so it slides over perfectly.

-hit the 'make planar' button to eliminate the extrusion, and then 'flip' so the proper side is showing.

And at this point is where I'm stumped. Having trouble showing the vertices of the extruded plane and the regular--flat--one, so I can select/weld them in together.

At first, I thought Gmax was way too compilcated to use, but it's not completely horrible. I'm beginning to see how how powerful it is though.

Another extraneous question: What is the teapot tool for? Whatever it's for, it sure is fun making teapots, and other objects you can create so quickly. The cone and torus are fun as well :)

Pepper: K, I'm fairly comfortable with basic design and manipulation of polys and vertexes and such, just one question about:

Scale. I really have no Idea what the units relate to 'in game.' Can we just make our weapon any size, and then scale it later???

in So you want a map? Post #126891
If I'm not as good as someone else at designing the layout, but I'm better at actually mapping it, it makes sense to work collaboratively.
I agree.

If you want to finish any of my maps, feel free. I'd be happy to provide plenty of reference pics/descriptions upon request.

Most of them have the source provided, except one--The Pink--that I'm having trouble updating in the vault, for some reason.

I get started on a project with tons of energy for the inital design, then lose the focus and motivation to complete it. :(

in Abandoned: Source Post #126803
*I am quite the source noobie, so keep that in mind regarding my opinion.

It seems sort of blah or boring, but boring isn't the right word. It's missing something I can't quite put my finger on.

Maybe it's just a stronger central theme. Yes, it's an abandoned something... but what? For example, If your playing Assault--either version--you can tell right away it's a shipping/receiving business of some sort. Near as I can tell from the screens, it's just a generator room for some kind of wharehouse.

The architecture/texturing are fine, just again, missing something. Just a little blah imo i guess. Maybe some more fine detail items besides the rubbish thingies.

To sum up, I will say I think you can do better than this. I've seen your work, so I know your a very talented mapper.

For example, that sample map you made for the Real world Construction compo was freaking amazing!

The little details of the broken window/shade and the pieces on the ground looked really good, and right away I felt I was in the top floor of some old, ratty, abandoned apartment. And that was just something you threw together!

I don't think This map accurately displays your potential.

But do we have to use that version of the M16?

I'd rather do the assault style, contemporary version--optics rail, front grip, collapsible stock etc.

By Props I meant things like the truck and the stealth plane. The proper name for them might be prefabs instead. Usually props refers to small static details. Not sure, but I think it's appropo here too.

The lights in the hallway by the control room are the ones I meant. I think they're the same in the sub access as well but not sure.

You might use switchble textures--maybe switchable textlights too--in the control room so you can tell what's on and off.

Also, If I walk from CT to T spawn and try to go left into that little passage next to the rock archway, I can see outside world :( That might be a bug to check out.

Also, I noticed there are a couple low spots that are easy to get stuck under--If you take the short way from CT to T spawn. However these might be intentional.

Amazing Job! I just played it and wrote a huge review--and subsequently erased in by accident!--, but I haven't the energy to reproduce it. :(

The Highlights:

-turn down the echo. If I played this map for too long, that loud reverb would drive me insane. Add a windy sound outside?

-Doesn't all the doodads wreck havoc in MP?

-Excellent custom textures and Props!!!!

-Superb Brushwork and lighting--how did you do those hallway thingies...incandescent flag? Where the circle around the light shrinks as you approach.

Overall, Amazing Job imo. One of the freshest MP maps I've seen in a while!

First, If your not compiling using expert, look here for some tips setting it up.

Then, you just type in -chart for each compile stage--csg, bsp, vis, rad--you want 'charted', in the 'parameters' dialog box. It should look something like this:

$path$file -chart

Then after you compile, for each stage, It will show you how much map resources you've expended, and the max for each category, respectively.

Seventh: Visigroups will make his work easier to manage and sort out, but not make hammer process any faster, will it?

PS: Ouchie. Your right Seventh, I didn't notice teh specs!

First, I would recommend using -chart to see how close to the limits your coming.

Hammer only does this for me when I have a map loaded that's giganticly gigantic. :)

If there is a patch, someone on the order of MoPx will have heard of it, and should be able to tell you if it's any good.

Are you saying that the government blew up the tubes/busses, so they can justify spying on us through the television?

That aside, you better believe big brother is alive and well in the 21st century, and has been for a long time. I recommend the movie with Will Smith and Gene Hackman as a great example.

While I was living in NYC I got a ticket on Queens Blvd for blowing a redlight. The thing was I was never pulled over! A camera shot me going throught the intersection, and I got the fine in the mail! Hate you I do, big bro!

I prefer the BBC too, even with the liberal slant you'll notice in the interviews sometimes. ;)
