source is SO much nicer.. A lot less buggy than hammer 3.x, and a lot of nice, added features. Lot's of little small things you come to appreciate like undo includes faces you've selected, and hitting esc clears whatever tool or selection you have active...

plus obviously you have a much bigger resource budget in source, but there are still limits and you can still break it!

)

I would love to try mapping for a new engine, but trying new things make me scart.

well, i'm about to give up on this. I actually got the viewcontrol to parent to the train somewhat, by using a method outlined by Gucio at Interlopers

To work, first of all, the train must already be in motion. Then, by a whatever trigger(i used a button), you enable the viewcontrol and also setparent of the viewcontrol to the train.

The problem(s) with this method is the VC will only follow the train for a short time, even if you don't have only ONE path_track, AND, fsr you are not able to operate the gun..

I've looked all over, and this is the closest i've come top successfully parenting the VC to the train.. If anybody knows of or can think of a work-around, please let me know!

Problem Fixed!

With the help of [frank] from Interlopers.

My point_vc is now properly parented to the tracktrain and everything(including the mouse-controlled gun) works perfectly!

Superb stuff!

I love the small detail like those concrete barriers and the cubicles, and the overall presentation of the map is extraordinary!

minor nitpicks

Maybe add some minor detail to make the map feel more "lived in":

trash cans
rubbish
food/food containers(PIZZA IN TEH CONFERENCE ROOM)
nick-nacks at peoples cubicles
projector ala office someplace
file cabinets
etc etc etc

A couple distractions i noticed:

The board room door texture is is strange
No railings on the stairwells
chairs don't really fit and scaled a little big imo
main reception area is begging for detail
doors you can't open should give you the "locked" sound
use a trigger so double doors open together

Most of the above are very small complaints imo and easily fixed. I DO realize the constraints put on you by the limits of the engine tho, so i understand not being able to add everything you might like. If your epoly budget is ok, maybe change a bunch of the small detail stuff to models?

ANYWAY, SEXELLENT stuff mah man, Bravo! Very impressive.

I tried searching for a model replacement on gamebanana, but fuck me if i couldn't find the forum search! I browsed through skins and could only find a crossbow replacement for HL2. =(

PB: You'd only be able to use the coded Sniper weapon in SP, correcto?

Stojke: could you just use a model/sound replacement for say, the crossbow? (since the crossbow pretty much behaves like a sniper rifle)

oh sorry huntey i thought i counted 9! (also sorry i didn't watch the video, i didn't know that's what it was!)

If you hit console in game, do you see any errors like "too many visibilty entities..."

Also, try compiling with -chart paramater, and see if you're coming close to any of the resource limits.

LAST thing. please describe the construction of the door in a little more detail. sometimes, choping an brush-based entity up into seperate "chunks" will eliminate visibility errors.

One thing tho, which probably isn't even related to the problem you're having(but it is known to cause unpredictable results), is you're referencing more than 8 wadfiles.

What i do to get around this, is use the glorious "WADMerge" in wally, so i never reference more than 4 or so wads at any given time. A snippet from my CSG:

Using mapfile wad configuration
Wadinclude list :
[zhlt.wad]
[D:D2wonHalf-Lifevalvecs.wad]
[D:D2wonHalf-Lifevalvehl.wad]
[D:D2wonHalf-Lifevalverooms.wad]
[D:D2wonHalf-Lifevalvezhlt.wad]


So basically, "cs.wad" is every wadfile in my cstrike folder combined, and same for "hl.wad". If i don't manually include zhlt, my hlfix buggers fsr(even tho zhlt.wad is automatically wadincluded).

Not trying to tell you how to do your mapping in any way, just a thought!

I always wondered that too, but i never tested it.. =)

If i had to guess, i'd imagine a bigger radius would cancel out, or be redundant to any smaller one, and not make any change.

Shift-dragging
select a brush, and then drag it whilst holding down the shift key. you've just cloned the brush. Depending on your settings in options, it will preserve visgroups and structure.

be careful tho, if you have ig ticked and you shift-drag, i think it will destroy any brush-based entities and groups. (depending on what you're doing, you may want that)

I'll try your suggestion and see if it works! Hammer 4 seems more than a bit quirky, like it's older brother.. =)

i've noticed so far that some entities simply won't work if they are parented to another object, but i'll keep trying to get it to work! (my carepackages will be pretty boring if i cant)

Also btw, i just noticed that point_viewcontrol has fields to add a path_corner and an inital train speed, but the speeds don't seem to match a tracktrain, and are much slower, so i'm not sure how exactly to pair them up properly.

I have a button that targets a controllable cannon on a train. the button also targets a point_viewcontrol. After activation, the cannon is operable by the player for 35 seconds. Everything works fine. (long as the train isn't moving)

However, when i try parenting the Point_viewcontrol to the train, it won't work. Without parenting it works, but of course as the train moves, the view remains static. (which is bad)

Any ideas how i can properly parent the the viewcontrol to the train, or do something else to get the same effect?

they were all set to 2 units off the ground and i raised it to 8, and their distance apart is 64 units minimum distance from any other guy.

hopefully help! i'll let u know if it happens again. ;)

Hello!

This question concerns Counter-Strike: Source

When testing my map with bots, i sometimes spawn inside another bot(or a bot spawns inside me, whichever). It happens on both T and CT sides, and at random tho quite frequently. If you are unfortunate enough to get trapped inside another guy and the round ends while you're alive, you'll be stuck again the next round. =(

Anyone knows what is causing this? there are 8 spawns on each side, and they are spaced out good. afaik, there are no duplicate spawns on top of each other.

Crazy: that looks neat reminds me of Splash Mountain, a ride at an amusement park near my house. =)

I tried many time to make a water slide in goldsrc, but failed, learning you'll "bump-bump-bump" down the chute unless you're "surfing". Is this much easier to make happen in source?

Ha, i may have found an answer to your question, at least, i've found conditions when this happens to me.

Sometimes, i can keep hammer and counter-strike open, and compile multiple times while playtesting, with no problem. However on bigger, more complex maps, i find i have to shut down hammer and restart CS every time, else i get the VRAD hanging or crash error.

For example, sometimes VRAD compile crashes or or runs forever for no apparent reason, but if i shutdown CS and restart Hammer (sometimes requiring to restart SDK), the vrad glitch is gone the next time i compile. Also, make sure you don't accidentally have to instances of Hammer open. (not sure if it's related, but sometimes when this happens i also have a extra hammer window open)

maybe when u edited the model you changed the directory structure, so now it's looking for the materials in the wrong place? do the materials show up if u view in model viewer? (ive heard it's a pain to get custom model's materials to show up in source, but ive not tried it yet..)

K. it won't work as a func_train, which is intended for stuff that rides on a flat plane.

Like i said, change it to a func_tracktrain, and change all the path_corners back to path_tracks. There are some other settings that are different, like setting the wheel distance and height from the track, and including an origin brush as part of the train, so make sure you read through the entity guide entry on track_train.

There are some good examples in the Map Vault for tracktrain as well.

try func_tracktrain and click the flag for no pitch(unless you want your train to "lean" into turns). remember, track_trains use path_tracks instead of path_corners.

just looked at the map, and it's like stojke said. by jump one, you have three seperate teleports named with a target of jump1. those 3 brushes should all be one, single, trigger_teleport, i.e., select all the brushes and ctrl+t them together. (you may want to make 2 out of the 3 world brushes FIRST, or you may get a bunch of "solid entity is empty", phantom trigger_teleports laying around.

Also, this map is pretty huge/crazy! =)

When you said you removed the "skybox" did that mean you had a skybox around the whole level? If it worked that way maybe just leave it?

wow, with all those teleports, it must be difficult to keep track of all the landmark names and triggers.... Does paste special have an option to help you with that or what?

It's been a while since i worked with teleports, but maybe a little more detail on how they are triggered and your naming conventions for your info_landmarks might help?

wow i'm super bummed, since i just-now learned there is no func_tank for CS:S?!

Anybody know of an existing example of entity-based setup that mimics a func_tank, or is there ANY WAY to use the HL2 func_tank in CSS?

even if i somehow coded one, am i correct in assuming nobody else playing css with me would be able to use/see it?

would it be possible to mount the squad weapon so it would sort of function like a func_tank? (i'm guessing not but i'm reaching here..)

Update: i don't think the entity being func_illusionary had anything to do with it, but more i think the map was just plain running our of resources. I deleted a lot of unneeded brushes, and now the map compiles fine.

Just a little surprised, cuz i never thought i'd run into this error with a normal map in source..

i need illusionary for the render properties, and yes sir, i'm sure it's the pretty rainbow, since the map compiles fine without it =(

edit: Hay Atom! changing the rainbow from illusionary to a func wall fixed it, and it compiles fine now!
