Get this program, VTF Explorer. This will allow you to extract the materials as TGA's, where you can edit them to your hearts content. Then, it's a relatively simple process to put them into a WAD file, but I'm assuming you know that already. ;)

Simple. You've got too many dynamic (changing) lights in your map. Delete loads of them.

You can only have 3 different dynamic lights on a face. If your lights are exactly the same (and named the same as well) then there shouldn't be a problem, as far as I know.

Yeah, but that just restores the health regardless of whether the monster is being shot or not. Secondly, if the monster is going to move around, that's a lot of area the trigger_hurt has to cover.

By mapping for an appropriate engine. HL isn't that.
Your map is far, far too large. HL1 is not built for it. Try mapping for the Source engine (HL2) if possible.

I don't think overclocking is an option: I don't have decent cooling on-board apart from the standard heatsink/fan. Besides, I don't want to risk it while I'm trying to finish this film. I'm hoping to get the upgrade soon anyway.

I like it. I think some of the texture choices were a bit repeatative (that big red building). Also, I'm once again plagued by peformance issues, which seems to be recurring within the newer maps.

brush with coplanar faces.

Example:
Entity 10, Brush 0, Side 5: has a coplanar plane at (-753, -9, 251), texture CA1X_CON1B
Entity 10, Brush 0, Side 6: has a coplanar plane at (-753, -32, 251), texture CA1X_CON1B

To fix this problem, either move the vertex causing the coplanar warning to make the brush convex again, or move the rogue vertex onto one of its neighbors to destroy it. There is a new program HLfix that is supposed to fix these.
