I think it's a bad idea to enter a contest if you're new at mapping. You're obviously not going to win, so it's best to develop your skills before entering a contest. Heck, I've been mapping for like two-three weeks and I haven't entered a contest yet.

Why not make the player trip out instead of get knocked out? Like, have the guy get stuck in Candyland or something. You could make it funny rather than clich? and/or boring.

I take it you've never had an internet conversation with an AOL user, then. It's not their decision on what ISP to get that makes them retarded. Its their general lack of intelligence when communicating to you through IM.

My major gripe with AOL is the stupidity of its users. 98.8% of all AOLers are complete and utter retards. Seriously, a typical conversation would go like this:

n00b: HIHIHIH WANNA CHAT ASL
Me: No. Go away.
n00b: Y
Me: Because I said so.
n00b: ASL
Me: No!
n00b: BITCH

Scale is a problem, yes. I knew the map is a box that is far too big, which in turn would cause r_speed problems, but at the time I created this map I had planned to test many things in it at once, including env_lasers (hence the green box). Later on, however, I ended up with this. I've been fiddling around with architecture, but as always I'm paranoid about r_speeds.

Mappy isn't a real big map nor is it fit for a minimod, so changing the size right now wouldn't matter much. Just there to show some cool things and that my current abilities aren't sub-par.

NOTE: When I played the map again, I noticed two small errors:
1. The door, when opening from the outside, swings through the wall.
2. When the elevator is going back down, it gets stuck in the ramp.

These are minor, but I'll fix them and put the map back up. I plan to use what I learned here to make a real map, but I have so many ideas I don't know which ones to choose.

You'd think a map this sucky isn't cause for celebration. But finally I made (although it needs some work) my first map, here: http://www.twhl.co.za/mapvault_map.php?id=3486

I want to make something of this map, but I don't know what. I'm thinking a DM map. What do you guys think?

Note: If you're dumb enough, you can hop off the elevator into the robot cage and ride them around. I need to put on a cover or something.

in What do you do for Halloween?! Post #144183
In my humble opinion, Halloween is for children, so I never go out on halloween adventures anymore. I remember the only good Halloween was when I was like 10 or 11 or something and a couple friends and I had a trick-or-treat party. I was dressed up as Mario.

In the future, when I move out and have my own place, I'm just going to scare the little kids instead of giving them candy.

in bmrf work area B-105 Post #143752
First I'd like to say this: Great map!

Everyone pretty much addressed most of the issues with your map so far, but I just have a couple atmosphere suggestions:

1. Try putting the security guard and whatnot at the beginning, because it feels as if you're walking into a secure area of BMRF after you've gotten off the tram. Or at least have the player start from the other end of the map.

2. To me, the storage room seemed a little out of place, especially with that red lighting. Change the red to white and the floor to something less metallic.

3. Add the ability for the player to enter one or two of the offices at the beginning of the map, maybe making the scientist inside say something along the lines of "Go away, Freeman! Can't you see I'm working?"

4. Also, the section seemed far too short, unless the door behind the player in the beginning chamber leads to more of Section B-105.

But hey, it's your map. Do whatever you want. Just fix those texture errors and the blurry textures. One more thing, though, when the player gets close to one of the walls with a lot of decor on it, they can hear computer sounds. These seem out of place unless you have a large computer terminal there.

I'll try out some of the other recorders, but I'll stick with Audacity for now.

I've been using the "20db Boost" option and attempted to record my sounds in Audacity. The problem is that most of the time when I use Noise Reduction to remove the background noise (I usually pause a bit after I speak so I can get a good amount of noise), it makes my recording sound hollow. I tried Normalize and Equalize, but those didn't work like I hoped they would.

Anyone using Audacity know what to do?

in rotating door opens only once. Post #143001
Well, to make my door swing and stuff, I just added a small origin brush to the left edge of a func_door_rotating, then set either the X or Y flag on, I can't remember which. Worked for me. Opened either way both sides. Make a new door and try that out.

in rotating door opens only once. Post #142961
You didn't bring these up, so I'm going to ask:

1. The door is a func_door_rotating, correct? Did you add a origin brush at the point you want it to rotate/swing/whatever?
2. Is the space big enough for the door?
3. Did you set the compass like this: ( ' ) ? That usually sets the door to open by moving forwards or backwards, which usually doesn't work.

Also try ticking the X or Y flags, or fiddling with the Pitch/Yaw/Roll and see what happens.

in Life's End Post #142730
Did anyone ever play the HL mod, Life's End? This mod was featured in the most recent issue of PC Gamer so I thought I'd check it out.

It's got your typical, cliched Half-Life plot, where you're Luther Johnson and you're stuck in BMRF after the RC incident. But there's a lot of cool effects and funny parts in it. For example, a couple times you inhale toxic chemicals and start tripping. There are also a couple funny signs on the walls and at one point you're stuck on the Starship Enterprise fighting Space Zombies. My only gripes with the game is that there's too much keycard hunting, and the ending is too anticlimatic

I have a question for all of you:

Do you do your own voice acting for mods, and if so, what equipment do you use? I wanted to do my own voice acting for future half-life mods, but my basic computer microphone sucks. Bad. Even taping a construction paper cone around it to amplify the sound doesn't work, and tinkering with it in Audacity only makes it sound worse.

So, what stuff do you guys use, and are there any good tips to follow?

Mike and Pete's Fun Half-Life Sound Pak is a must download. These guys know how to take the tension away from Half-Life and make it funny.

Also, try Azure Sheep. That's a pretty good one, although it seems like a Blue Shift clone. There's also Point of View where you get to play as an Alien Slave (or Vortigaunt, whatever you want to call them.)

If you can't find a mod to play (or don't like these ones), I recommend downloading RandMap v4. This thing generates playable maps for you to waste things in. It makes them in three styles: Indoors (which I don't like because some of the doors won't open unless you noclip) Outdoors, and a mix of the two. It's not very linear, but it's a good time waster. Playing 10 of these maps is usually enough for me.

Yeah, VB6's is a bizatch when it comes to functionality. The only real useful thing I've made from VB6 was an Insult Generator, and I had to package some OCX and a couple fonts to get it to work right on some systems.

I should learn Delphi, or figure out how to code a GUI in FreeBasic.

Black mesa : Source is already under way, my boxtop friend....
There's just one problem with that: I don't have HL2, and don't plan to buy it because a. my computer sucks and b. it would only load if Steam could gain access to the internet to verify my copy. My own computer doesn't connect to the internet. :
There was once a project for a mod which would add more variation to the personell at Black Mesa, but like most mods, it was never finished.
That's sad. DT looked like a cool mod.

You know what we should do? Make a mod called something like "Black Mesa Personell" that contains just race and gender variations on the scis and barneys, for HL1. Make it like a collaborative TWHL effort. I can do some skinning, although I've only dabbled in it once.

I thinking about a mod which would add more variation to the personell at Black Mesa. Like more sci heads, and female scis and Barneys (like in Azure Sheep ala Barnita). And there would be different Barneys as well, rather than the same one who keeps offering you beers.

Someone should do that. That would be cool.
