The theme, at least in my opinion, isn't the focal point of a desktop. When u see a desktop, is the first thing that catches your eye the accents that are provided by the theme or the LARGE image plastered in the background? The theme complements the background. It's the choice of image that really drives the desktop, not how u accentuate it.

Yeah, Rabid's does sound simpler. I'd beat u to the tutorial, but yours would A) Look better visually and B) Be more indepth (probably) and make for sence to the average user (according to my family, I tend to get way technical and talk over their heads, but that could just be b/c they are 'lesser' beings ;) )

I'm still learning the countless things that are possible w/ the Source engine and instead of wasting hours and hours of fruitless time trying to figure out if this is possible or even fiasable, I thought I'd ask you guys  .

Is it possible to made a door that rolls left/right, as demonstrated in my 1337 MSPaint, w/o using a model, just brushes?

Oh...I forgot to mention that technically it's a demo right now. Thay haven't 'officially' launched the game, although there have been 4 versions of the demo (and maybe a 5th they said if Valve releases a SDK update b4 the launch of v.1). they may be accidentally/intentionally left that out until v.1.

Dark: That worked. The model displayed fine (al be it not solid, but I'm pretty certain that's my fault)

Rabid: It should be, but when I call models from the GCF, like I just did, w/ newly added models, to test Dark's suggestion, they displayed as the big, red ERROR model. See, I don't think, since they have a model folder within there directory, that they call the Source Model GCF as all the models used by the Team are custom from what I've seen. Mind u I don't know the fisrt thing about creating Source mods, so I'm just guessing.

I've got a ramp and a set of stairs (trying to decide which looks better). Both go up but also curve at a 90 degree angle, one right, one left. I used the Vertex Manipulator to create both (started w/ an arch. Also, underside of stairs is like ramp, smooth) and they display find in the Hammer 3D View. However, after compiling them, they become jagged in the map. I was wondering, is there a file like HLFix for the original engine, but in a Source version?

in HL2 Models to Other Mods Post #185289
I posted this problem one the Dystopia forums and haven't gotten an answer yet, so I thought I'd try someplace where the overall experience is higher.
One of the maps I'm working on (yes, I'm known to get multiple projects going at once...I've also got about a half dozen CSS maps on the go) uses Combine models from HL2. I extracted them from th Game Cache File already and I got most of them to work.

I'm having trouble w/ one called 'masterinterface_dyn' from the props_combine folder. It's been extracted already (just to remind u so noone suggests that) and I did as the first error report told me, change it from prop_detail to prop_static. However, now I get and error telling me that I have to compile it using $staticprop and I have no idea what it means. The exact error reads 'Error! To use model "models/ProjectBeta/masterinterface_dyn.mdl"
with prop_static, it must be compiled with $staticprop!'

How do I fix this?
Can u guys help me w/ my problem?

Habboi, technically u are hidding the stuf on your desktop by having the pic and such a small size that it's hard to impossible to make out the text.

Thanx for the info Seventh, and as for the AM2 and DDR2 concerns, they are both more or less flegling technologies so they won't be optimal just yet. Plus since AM2 is the socket that future AMD chips will use, upgrading won't be too much of a hassle, and I don't think any AM2 boards use the old DDR.

Anyway, as always, thanx for the help guys.

Ahhh. Well, S939 is no longer the 'standard'. Recently they released their new chipset, Socket AM2, which isn't backwards compatible (no mobo or cpu recycling again for u), and supports DDR2.

Now, I had a look over the Tom's Hardware site (would have been easier w/ a search option : ) and I didn't find the answer to my question. To all out there with a DIY system, what's the north/south bridge on your mobo and what graphics card are u using? An impromptu servey should provide the answer.

It's not an upgrade. I'm getting my own comp soon and it's either a high-end laptop or a DIY desktop.

You mustn't know much about computers as DDR2 is the best right now. DDR3, which IS currently used for graphics cards, isn't available as system memory 'til mid to late 2007, besides the fact that rumors are saying that since both use 240-pin, their won't be a need to upgrade.

Also, I'll check out that site to see if I can find out my question within what's there, but I'm not really keen on join a new community, when there are ppl here that 'know' me and can answer my questions.

Update I was just checkin' out Tweak3D and personally, I wouldn't trust a site or it's community if it's articles aren't up-to-date. After clicking' on the articles link, I saw no article, not even the 'Build Your Own PC' one, that mentioned PCI Express.

In my ongoing battle between a desktop and a laptop, I've periodically been pricing components for my desktop. THe question I have is: does the north/south bridges of the motherboard have to be the same as the chipset in the PCI-E graphics card (ATI to ATI, nVidia to nVidia) or can they be different?

FYI:I tried to get help w/ this question in the IRC channel, but I was either ignored for the mindless music discussion at the time, or I wasn't getting through properly.

EDIT Also which is better: Unbuffered or Fully Buffered DDR2?

in Odd func_brush problem Post #184762
I'm workin' on a map that has an energy bridge in it. I've created the bridge using a func_wall_toggle w/ the Clip texture so only players can cross the bridge (ie no rockets can hit it, no grenades bounce on it) and a func_brush w/ the Combie Comshieldwall texture on it, not solid, to show the bridge is active. It starts off, and a logic_compare entity activates them by toggling the func_wall_toggle and enabling the func_brush.

However, u can only see the func_brush if you're standing in the center of it. You can't see it's on from either end. I've set it to not give of or receive shadows, never be solid and the Solid BSP in Yes.

What foolish thing am I overlooking?

You may not have to wait too much longer. Crysis, the new game from Crytek, was built to take advantage of DirectX 10. Since it's due out in the fourth quarter of '06 (Oct - Dec), it stands to reason that it'll be out by then.

And if ppl already know the date, I personally don't keep up w/ Microsoft's camp much.

I have made up my mind as to which processor company I'm going w/ regardless of the type of computer, AMD. However, a recently read a post on AMD Zone that AMD is rumored to be gearing up to switch their Alchemy line of notebook processors in for ones built on the x86 architecture. As I don't know which processors currently fall into this issue, I come asking the TWHL community.

Which of AMD's notebook processors are these, or more specifically, are their new Turion 64 X2's based on Alchemy?

I was looking over the Valve Developer community Wiki concerning Bullet Penetration in CS:S and it says tat two brushes, each 1 inch thick, placed touching (no space or overlap) are completely bulletproof and don't allow a bullet to hit anyone/thing on the other side. I'm confused by this b/c as far as I know, the scale in the Hammer window is in pixels by default, not inches. I was wondering, how I change the scale to inches or if I'm wrong and it currently is inches.
