I posted an application your forums. All of my good props are there, and links to a small portion of my textures. I can't get the rest yet though, because I can't get them off of my old comp. I got the ones I linked to from the friend I made them for.

Yea... the thing is, most of my textures (my good ones, that is) aren't on my Photobucket, and are on my old PC... I'll see about getting them soon. As for my props, I didn't learn how to UV until a short while ago, and even then, it's only basic. I'll get some renders of some of my models, and some of my textures, to you as soon as I can. The good thing though is that its a tiny bit more than a month before summer vacation, so I'll have a lot of time on my hands soon.

I could probably provide some texture art, and maybe a few prop models, provided I remember how to UV Map... I can definatly do textures though.

In the UV window, under tools, there is flip vertically and horizontally, as well as mirror vertically and horizontally.

Also, you should talk about polygon budgets at some point, so the reader knows not to go overboard. While it's probably not a concern in either of the two cases in the tutorial, it is in a lot of other cases.

Also, when i try to compile my model, it says that it's an unsupported file type, because it's TGA. However, whenever I try to assign a .bmp version of the texture to it in Max 9, it says it's an unsupported BMP type. Any idea what's wrong?

Sweet. I already knew some basic modeling and UV wrapping, but I could never figure out how to attach bones I created to my models. Now I do!

Yea, the system would have to be modified extensively, but it could work.

They could have simply put stricter limits on grenades (1 MIRV, for instance, and only for the Demoman- the Heavy would get none; one gas grenade for the spy), and also changed some grenades, (for instance, let only Scouts have concs, and maybe make some sort of new grenade for the medic, perhaps one that creates a small infection in anybody the blast radius touches, and then when they touch someones else, the infection spreads, and becomes a little stronger each time, but can be cured by a friendly medic.) There were other options besides throwing veterans out the window. Adding the totally same grenade system would ruin the balance, yes, but a revamped one could do the game well.

It could very well add teamwork. Say you have a very heavily defended room, and you can't penetrate it alone, even with your grenade. But, if you get a few of your guys together, you can put together a coordinated assault:

(This entirely hypothetical. There are so many variables to take into consideration that I doubt it would ever go exactly like this. This is just a situation to demonstrate how a revamped grenade system could add to the game.)

When everyone charges in, the heavy could go in front and take some fire so everyone else does their thing. The engy could throw his single EMP in the general direction of a sentry, or group of sentries, to take them out for a second, buying some time. The demo could toss a MIRV into a group of heavies, to hurt them seriously. With the bulk of the defense gone, the attackers can then proceed to put up a good fight.

Of course, the defense could use grenades too. In all the chaos, a medic could toss a previously mentioned "Infection grenade" to seriously hurt the attackers- if he isn't hurt by one of the attackers. Of course, things might get a little spammy if a grenade explodes as soon after it hits the ground as in TFC, so it might be wise to make it take a little longer, so that the attackers can get out of dodge, thus forcing whoever is throwing said grenade, to actually think about where they throw their grenade, instead of a, "throw and forget" situation. They would have to take a longer fuse time into consideration so that they throw where they think the enemy may be- not where they are at that very moment. A grenade indicator like in Call of Duty (yes, I know I said this isn't COD, but a grenade indicator isn't exactly the most realistic thing. Perhaps a "shout warning" key, so that one could warn their team mates of a grenade.)

/end really really long hypothetical situation.

Yea, I'm no professional game designer, and I'm sure there are holes I never thought about or took into consideration, but that's my general idea. A revamped grenade system would make the veterans warm up to the game some more, while still keeping it like TF2 is right now.

I have gotten some serious playtime with TF2 now, and I admit, it is still an enjoyable game- but it just doesn't feel quite like a TF game to me. I still need a little more playtime with FF though. They have been changing stuff a little as well (they removed the medics infection spreading in a patch.) So it's not like it's a carbon copy of TFC, they've changed stuff too...

Oh, so now this is a Battlefield game?

Seriously, what's with this... it isn't even original. It's plain stupid, like the gun market thing for CSS- which, might I add, is used by nobody (do they still even support it anymore?) If anything, this will scare away players.

The fact that the are releasing Badlands is great, though. I probably would rather of had Avanti, however. That was such an awesome map, spent many late nights fragging into the morning on that map.

And besides, they could have always released Casbah instead- which was a so-so map. It COULD have much potential, but only if it were extensively redesigned. No ET-Atari long walk from the spawn, thank you. So I'm thankful either way.

Gold Rush sounds like a cool concept, and it sounds like a lot of fun.

Ah, yes... the map was supposed to be very vertically inclined... and that was the central room, where there were supposed to be a bunch of catwalks at different heights. Being as horrible as I am at mapping,I saw fit to make some uniform holes in the roof, and thus the funky lighting.

I may reinvent that room by lowering the roof and stuff a lot, then fixing my architecture.

First off, this is pretty cool to hear. I just hope they keep the name to Half-Life 3 because it sounds complete, and I want to spend 6 years waiting for that, and not, "Half-Life:The Combine Strikes Back!"

Also, I rather enjoyed the first Halo on the PC, aside from the crappy netcode.

Episode 3 really better have some new weapons. Where the hell are my Snarks?! Or Egon and Gauss guns?! Hell, I'd even settle for the hive hand...

I think I ought to re word what I posted, since I think I am responsible for setting this off. I probably should have never thrown in the, "to be fair" part alone without an explanation, as that in itself is not fair.

What I meant was, right now, I can't play HL2 maps due to hardware issues. At least not for any significant amount of time- I can play a Source single-player map for a short while- and that's at best (Portal excluded- I have no idea why, but it runs for a longer time on here. Also, this is also due to the fact it's one room at a time, so I can still play it, because I can complete however many puzzles, and then whenever it does eventualy crash, I can pick up where I left off a little later.) I could try my old XP machine, but that's acting up as of late, and that may have caused me to not have experienced the map properly- and I don't think I would be able to vote fairly in that case, because the map would not have been as fun to me as to others, in that matter. I can vote for a Source multi player map, because I can just play for a short amount of time to see if I enjoy it, wheres in a single player map/mod, I have to play through quite a bit of it, which takes quite a while in many cases, at which the game will crash due to my ATi driver's driver failing. So I didn't want to vote for The Citizen for a simple reason- I had never played it. And I don't want to vote for something I have never played, just because it was popular- so I voted for particle, because this was the map I liked the most from the Vault this month- that I had played. So, that's what I meant by, "to be fair." If I had voted for TC because everyone else was saying it was good, and were voting for it, that's not fair either. So, I figured that the most fair course of action was to vote for the map I had played, and liked the best.

It actually might be a good idea for someone to give a constructive explanation why they liked a map enough to vote for it, for their vote to be counted. If someone says they liked a map just because it was, "awesome" that's not constructive. Indeed, I left out why I enjoyed particle, and that was because I honestly never thought a few people would get wound up over what map won. I liked the the theme and the texturing, as well as the moody lighting, which, along with some nice use of sounds here and there, helped set a nice ambiance.

Also, later in the compile:

nummarkfaces == MAX_LEAF_FACES

I know the second error has something to do with VIS (due to leaves) but I have no idea what all of the other errors are about.

And yes, I have checked Tommy's site.

Dm_particle, to keep things a bit fairer. I can't play HL2 maps anyways, at least for more than 30 minuets at max due to a need for a bigger PSU, so yea, DM_Particle.

I get this error whenever I try to load my map.

I have been getting it since I added a moving lift...

I checked Tommy 14's site, and his description of the error has nothing to do with anything in my map.

Some Vista users (including me) can't select any brushes or faces or anything via clicking them in the 3d view.

Well, I don't know, my brushwork seems fine to me...

Either way, a clickable view for me is nice, and needed, so I'll probably be using it for texture tweaking.

in Quark for lighting? Post #239354
Let me set one thing straight, when it comes to brushwork and stuff, I choose hammer over anything else(ESPECIALY Quark.) However, Quark may now be useful for lighting,

Quark recently added real time OpenGL lighting in it's 3d view. I am setting the editor up right now, so I can't say whether it even works with Half-Life, and if it does, whether it is stable. Setting it for HL is a bitch however, as it is intended for old WON/pre-Steam installations.

Also, I can personally atest that Quarks 3d View is click able in Vista, so this may provide a solution for those who have trouble with Hammer, and need to use a 3d view for things like texture tweaking.

Any thoughts? Sounds kinda cool to me.

I Don't know what to vote for-yet.

However, shouldn't a map be reviewed by a panel of a few people who played the map together? Because to really review a map and see how it plays, you have to play with other people.

EDIT: dm_bulk has my vote.

We should make a community mod out of this.

8800GT. Better than a GTS, but around 200-250 bucks.

EDIT: I read a bit, and apparently Nvidea increased the Stream processors on the GTs just enough to keep it better than the GT. Still, the GT, from the reviews I have read, runs wonderfully.

Here's one review.

I tried the link on VERC, but it was dead.

Can anyone point me out to a working link?

Oops, I meant ZHLT.

How is it true"er" than FF, simply because it has Valve behind it?

Um, no.

In the end I'm disappointed with both TF2 and FF. Neither gave me what I wanted. Neither game is more true than the other, frankly.

I gave it a fair shot, and didn't end up liking it as much.. I don't know what else you want.

Portal is still the shit though. PERIOD.

Have yet to try Episode 2, I want to get my driver issues sorted out first.

Well, my driver problem isn't completely fixed, but it was better now, and I was able to play for about fifteen minuets. My initial impressions:

First off, the art direction is, indeed, fantastic. It goes perfectly with TF. I like the nice touches they did with the UI too, and with some of the player models, such as the fatty smiling after squeezing some rounds off for a short amount of time.

However, while it does seem to be a fun game, I felt way too limited in what I could do compared to the traditional formula. They changed too much. I mean, come on, when someone dies, they don't even drop a fucking backpack with ammo anymore! (unless I missed it, only got to play for 15-20 minuets) They even had to change that! No trick jumping besides double jumping sucks, too.

It felt way to slow compared to the traditional formula. It's still fast, but not as fast, IMHO.

The game has it's fun moments, but I would hardly call it the best multi player game ever, at least right now. I would like to get some more playtime, although ATi drivers that insist on being a bitch keep me from doing so. 8/10. It IS a great game, I will give it that, but it doesn't feel like a "true" TF game to me. I feel pretty disappointed- in the end, neither FF nor TF2 seem to be what I wanted. I was hoping that when I was done playing, I would be writing an apology email to Gabe Newell for being so damn critical in every forum post, but I'm not.

Still, I think I need more playtime to be sure.
