The map looks awesome, I think you are just a touch little too optimistic about the map, posting it as a beta and asking for people opinions on what could be made better and beta testing wouldnt of hurt the map any. On the other hand the map looks excellent, although I havnt had a chance to play it yet (my computer is still broken) I look foward to.

I think it was an excellent idea to port a map from a console version to the PC version, people should do more of it. Are there any other maps for CS Xbox that would be good to convert?

But lets be realistic here, the chances of finding a buyer on the internet without using ebay or other auction websites is extremly small. Ask around you neigbourhood or put an advert in the papers.

Awesome, TBQFH I prefered the TFC soldier and that dagger looks more like a bastard sword than a combat knife.

So you planning on getting broad band or whatever at your new place?

I would hate for media and feedback to be cut off from your mod at such an early stage.

I love the second screen shot, very nice lighting. The first screen shot looks a bit bare though. Tell me, how do you plan to complete this mod if you have no internet connection?

That soldier model looks brilliant, but it NEEDS a better gun model.

Hmmm... the idea is certainly original. Having the fight take place in just 1 cell is a bit strange I think, scaling it up so that gordon can fight through viens and such is a better idea me thinks.

With regards to that 'testicle' I dont think you need to do much, perhaps ass some sort of mechanical parts that have been implanted with gordon, perhaps give it a window? I dont think it looks like a bollock as such, and I think in the proper setting it would look like a cell.

But wait, where is the huge xen ship and the fight in xen?

This is a small single player map pack idea I have been working on for the last few days, its for HL2 and features no new textures or coding or models, just new single player maps.

The basic idea behind it is that you have entered the dungeon, your goal is to find the 'treasure' at the end of the dungeon but mainly to foil the evil plans of the dungeons creator (me, Tycell).

Here is the concept drawing (hand converted, from the picture I drew, in paint) for the first level. The name is inaccurate and should be "MetroCop Madness". Here is the picture;

The idea behind the levels is simple, if any of you have played Halo 1 it will be somthing like the indoor combat there. Lots of cover and strange (brush built) machines in operation all over the place. The darkened areas in the picture are large pits to fall down. So far I have 5 maps planned, each with a different theme and setting. The 'golden map' which will be the showcase map for this small map pack I might also convert into a CSS map as its very combat orientated.

The other levels I have planned are far to difficult and time conusming to put into a floor plan because they are multi leveld. Apart from possibly the second one 'Zombie Zania' and the third one 'Soldier Stockades', which are not so multi level orientated in parts. Anyway, I intend to make the first map (once my computer is back up and running) to show you guys what I mean about the level layouts and such.

Your themes are good RimRook and you have the ability to give them form aswell. They arnt all exactly the type of themes I would use, a lot of them seem to be mixed contrasts and chaotic clashes. Still some of them are good.

@ Everyone bitching in the thread, against or for Rim:

You guys are all entitled to post such threads aswell you know, threads like "I have an idea" or "A concept I am working on". Stop bitching about the person posting it.

I get insperation from films I like, not so much from music... though what I imagine while I listen to music can be good sometimes. Mainly though, I get my ideas from other games. If you look at games from a developers point of view, you can really pick out some awesome ideas from it.

I am always thinking while playing thorugh a game "Hmm... so they did that because it makes this easier, cleaver." or "Now that is a very cleaver way of incorperating grenades." things like that. Currently I am putting together a concept for a set of HL2 SP maps called "Tycell's Dungeon" and when I get my computer back and running (hopefully in 1-2 days) I am going to start work on it.

A lot of the idea is simply aspects from other games, combined in a new and interesting way which makes it original and fun. What was it einstien said? "The best idea's are just old ideas but done in such a way that they seem original."

"Swindle" is a decent film, about a bank robbery and an undercover cop who gets in on it.

"Bad Santa" is an absolutly awesome film, all about a drunk lockpicker and a midget that rob large shopping complexs. Very good film, lots of swearing in it though.

"Shogun Assassin" is a brilliant film. Its old and was originally made in japan but its fantastic, all about the Shogun's Personal Exacutioner who disobeys him one day and is then hunted by droves of assassins, while he is trying to protect his baby son in this KICK ASS pram that has swords and shit built into it.

I have a really nice part layed out in my head;

Overhead speakers: "Warning, reactor status; critical. All personell you have six minuets to reach minimum safe distance."

With pipes exploding, the whole base shaking, electricity going everywhere and the player making a b line for the escape pods. :)

I think he is reffering to the ammount of HL1 mods there are, leaving HL1 bloated with mods.

As for the complex itself, of course you dont want to make it a research station! ;)

How about some kind of super new under water power plant that is being built and tested? Or a supply depo type place for other underwater bases. Or how about an evil underwater lair?

No, and underwater base mod idea is completly possible, even without having water outside the windows. Just have a dark blue (like underwater) skybox and add in bubble sprites to the windows and boom, your underwater. I was planning on doing an underwater base recently.

Who wants to play as an unarmed dog like creature with no communication we can understand? It might work as a very short mod, but then why bother with all the work envoled?

Basically people want to play games as character they can relate to, no one can related to what is effectivly a dog with an energy grenade up its ass.

Sorry dude, but my thoughts are that it will never work.

So whats the big whoop here? No offence VOX but try to come up with somthing more orignal than Teleporter Technology opening a portal to hell or an alien dimension.

Teleporter accident eh?

Perhaps have the player as a security gaurd? Aw shucks thats been done (Blue Shift). Hmmm, how about a soldier? Ah shucks thats been done too (Opposing Force). Scientist is also taken, obviously (Half-Life), hmm, what about an alien? Aw shucks thats been done aswell (mod where you play as an advanced alien slave, forget the name of it).

Seriously, people should broaden their horizons. I'm in no way having a go at you here VOX, but try to come up with somthing that hasnt been over done by either other games or by half life mods.

Try to think of a more orignal setting than "OMG we have stumbled accross some new enemy while trying to make a teleporter!" or "OMG a virus has made a new enemy!". Try to think of somthing more original, its pretty hard because if you want monsters, there are only really two choices; Aliens or Created by humans.

Too many people use the easy routes these days, either virus in a lab breaks loose or teleporter accident unleashes them. Its quick and conviniant but why not try for somthing more original? Just some examples;
  • Monsters found on a newly discovered island.
  • Aliens invade earth in space ships.
  • Earth invades alien world in space ships.
  • Ancient monsters awakened in a tomb expidition deep underground.

This does look good Rimrook, but.

Try to make the models more original, just reskinning the original HL models isnt a big song and dance, even if they do look good.

Try to make the monsters more recognisable by their shape rather than their colours (Red is bad, green is good etc). Other than that, it looks brilliant, cant wait to get my comp back online and play this :)

Ah VOX,

You say there is no gravity to pull the universe back together, but there is. Even if there were only 1 black hole in our galaxy eventually (after a long time) it would pull everything back together, creating another big bang. Whats more, there are millions of black holes, and more being created every day, so eventually the black holes will suck each other in, and then that huge black hole will suck in everything else, thus the big bang happens again.

What gets me, is what would happen if there were no big bang? What if nothing existed? Its so difficult to think about. Its like infinity, you can comprehend infinity, yet you cannot concive it. If the universe is infinite, and there has always been a big bang over and over, what if this is the first one? what if this is the first universe and everything after this one will be results of the big bang and such.

A Black Hole.

There is a brilliant idea, which I actually though of myself, and then got told by my physics teacher that it was actually the most commonly held theory out there on the subject.

A lot of stars when they die turn into a black hole right? Even our star (they reckon) will go into a black hole eventually (after it has gone super nova?). I think that everything in the galaxy will just eventually be sucking into black holes, these black holes will then eventually suck each other up, and so on and so on until you have just 1 black hole left. Then, BOOM, the big bang starts all over again because everything is compressed into one spot.

Freaky eh? So there is no such thing as the "end of time" in this case, everything will just start over again.

Deep thoughts are usually far too complex and lencthy to put into word easily. I suppose a very simple example would be 'Time'. Time doesnt exist, hence why it is imposible to travel through time, it is a human concept. A measurment, like Meters. "A Meter" doesnt exist, its just a concept, a way of measuring somthing. Time does not exist, hence why time travel is imposible, because its just a measurement, not a force or an object. Now combine this with the fact that people get old and die, and how the more 'time' you spend on the planet the older you get. If time isnt real, how is this possible?

Anyway, as I said real "Deep Thoughts" are very hard to put into words, because they are just that; "deep thoughts". I bet that you guys could put foward any "Deep Throughts" to me (and others no doubt) and we would be able to give you answers. I could answer every question in this thread if I had the effort and will too. "Deep Thoughts" are usually very illusive so think carefully before you post anything else in this thread.

A lot of the questions you guys are putting foward are very easy to answer... I mean stuff like;

"If I try to fail, but suceed, what have I done?" - You have suceeded, even though you tried to fail.

Like, so many of these questions are so simple to answer and dont deserve to be in this thread.

"If I am myself, and you are yourself, who am I?" - You are yourself.

I mean common guys... simple answers. I am yet to see a good "Deep through" post in here.

Well the story sounds good, apart from one thing.
Don't worry about this little assignment. You only need to go in and determine if there is a hostile environment or not. If so, radio back to us and we'll pull you out and send in air strikes. It's the only thing we can do.
This sounds silly, why would you send in a spcialist just to recon the area? And if there is some hidden plot behind it to get gordon stuck in there, its very obvious to the player. You should revise this part, the millitary doesnt send in rouge physicists to scout out a base.

Perhaps have him sent in because there forces have been unable to gain access to the base? Saying that the Xen creatures are blocking off the ways in? Anything, but telling somone they have to go in just to see if there are enemies there and then if there are that they will be pulled out is just stupid. And dogs body could walk in, look around, and walk out again.

Nade looks good Urb, but, very very stupid having only one form of detonating it, what if it gets caught on a belt of pressed on when somone sits down? You should add a pin aswell as the catch.

Pull the pin, then when the catch is released you have 4 seconds to throw it. Having just the catch means that if somone slips or trips it accidently, they sit on their ass for four seconds and then get surprised when their legs come up through their lungs. A tiny bit more realism is all I ask :)

Bloody hell thats a lot of edits, I think its a new record.

After you have done your part, you can make whatever you like.

One thing though, I am not to keen on custom content, rather making full use of the availble content.

Ok, I will allow brushes to touch the edges but please dont go mad with it, remember that all the boxes will be linked so if you have a mass of triangles touching one box, the splits could work their way into the others aswell.

Elon, your in. You can do whichever part you like, alright people, only Energy (My first choice) and fire left... actually, I think I will let the others get picked and then I will do the remaining one. So if you want to sign you can do either fire water or energy. Keep em comming.

OK, I am going to go ahead and make this.

Things you need to know:
  • This will be for Opposing force, so you will need a copy of opposing force and the latest FDG (link below) in order to map and play this.

  • I need 3 people willing to work on this, each will recive one quater of the map in a large box to map out your own theme. This is single player so dont go crazy with the R_speeds, but you do have some freedom.
  • YOU CANNOT BUILD BRUSHES THAT CONNECT WITH THE OUTER BOX! This is mainly to save of vis and brush cutting but also because it fits the theme, you can build walls and such to within one unit of the walls though (so no real dampener there).
  • Each quater will have a theme that you have to stick too, EG Water, Fire, energy etc. So if you pick the water area for example, you HAVE to incorperate water obsticles and water enemies into your quater, you are not limited to only these but you have to have them at least somwhere in your map. This is to flesh the map out a bit and also to stop it turning into a four way grunt fest.
  • There will be a weapons strip after every quater, so remember that you need to re equip your character with weapons / health / armour at the start of your box.
Thats it, well who is interested? I am already working on my quater, I have decided to do water. So the spaces left are; Energy, Fire and Mechanical.

Further details on each theme;

Enemies you should try to include / theme information:

Fire: Alien Controllers, gargantua's, zombies (because zombies LOVE fire) and hapless civillians for toasting.

The fire theme should have various fire obsticles steam should also be used if possible, perhaps a rocket engine and a tenticle enemy?

Water: Bullsquids, Pit Drones, Headcrabs, Itchies, barnicles and zombies (because zombies love water).

The water are will feature (I know this because I am doing it) various water hazards, a lot of swimming and a touch of horror.

Energy: Alien Slaves, Shock Troopers, Voltigores, hound eyes.

The energy theme can be like anything you want, I had in mind somthing like a laser maze, with floating platforms and strange machines with lots of pretty beam effects.

Mechanical: Grunts, Alien Grunts, turrets (tanks?), trip mines and so on.

The theme I had in mind was somthing like a large factory area with lots of moving noisey machinery with crushes, cutter, convayorbelts and so on.

Just another note to say that you are NOT restricted to using just those enemies in your quater if you sign up, those are just the enemies that fit the theme, you dont HAVE to use any of them but it is reccomended.

So common then, whos interested?

Awesome! I like the style, and the crowbar looks awesome!

Cant go wrong with a bit of wood with a nail through it :D

If you play as a security gaurd though, wouldnt a trunchen been more appropriate?

Don't waste your time. Tycell apparently wouldn't mind if someone was leeching huge amounts of his bandwith/HDD space, without his knowlege/permission, for something he didn't need/want.
I have noticed no drain in bandwidth and 4 gig isnt really that much these days. If valve want to give me the free HL2 demo seeing as a bought the game, good for them. I dont care, and it hasnt ever disturbed my online play.

Wow wow wow, first off, yes Emo is all accross the UK like a rash aswell.

Second, Emo is NOT THE NEXT LEVEL OF GOTH. A traditional goth wont have makeup on, or lots of metal hanging off them, they will just have black cloths and keep to themselfs, I should know because I was a goth when I was 14-17 and in some ways I suppose I still am.

Emos have this whole image about them that I just cant figure out. Its a cry for attention but at the same time saying "Leave me alone, dont pay attention to me, I just want to be left alone." Well like you guys have been saying, if you want to be left alone why do you mutalate your body and wear cloths that stand out and instantly brand you as "I want attention."

I know a fair few emos and underneath it all they can be really down to earth, but I will agree that if you see a random one in the street you just have the urge to kick their fucking head in and tell them to stop being such a faggot.

How many times must the same thing be beaten into your head? Honestly if you are complaining about the size of something that is free, you really need to find a better use of your time.

If history is an example, games will only continue to grow in size. We used to be able to contain games on floppys. As the game grew more complex, they contained more data and the next media we moved to was CDs, as they had a higher capacity. Now we are starting to see games released on DVDs as they are getting even more complex and therefore contain much more data. Its a sign of the times. If you want to cry and complain about the size of games nowadays then perhaps you should return to gaming on your 486.

Maybe you can save up a purchase a bigger hard drive as they have become very cheap. Or you could just delete some junk from your exisiting hard drive. Im really not sure what you are looking for here. Do you want all teh game devs to bow to your will and release sub par demos to satisfy your unrealistic needs? Or do you think the ownes is on you to be able to provide enough disk space to house a FREE demo.
