J.C You raise a damn good point, I had never looked at the sun that way before... I'm not saying we should start worshiping it or anything (Unless you guys want to >_>) but it is more like a God to us than anything any religion has come up with.

I am Athiest and I agree with ZL's view, although its not always true every athiest has thought that at one point or another (unless they arnt deep thinking or have no conception of God or Religion).
Nice doodles.

Why is it the fact you started this thread with "Lol wouldnt it be funny to..." immiediatly make me think; young person, new to the internet (ish), and somone with little mapping experiance?

Sorry thats just what popped into my head when I read the first line. Why would anyone want to do this anyway? "Look at me Ma, I can max out and crash a game engine nearly a decade old!". Perhaps all those who enter would be 'Newly Educated Reproductivly Deprived Socialist'?

I'm not saying it was a bad idea... well ok it is a bad idea... Yea thats pretty much the end of it. No offence intended.

The jumping was pretty easy rim, if you took your time (though I did fall a fair few times on that one where you have to go slow at first). If there was rising acid or lava or somthing like that putting pressure on it would be cool. People tend to make more mistakes when they are under time pressure and I bet that map would be a laugh on HLDM, who can climb to the top where the 1 gun in the level is? :)

My Appolagies Sace, I was overeacting, childish and very likly very hurtful to you with some of the stuff I said in my previous posts. I was just angry at a lot of stuff in RL and I kinda got carried away.

I take back all I said, and looking at this topic now I am staying the fuck out of it from here on until its inevitable journey in to lockhood and forgettance. (Not real words, I know).

I should of taken more care with what I said, you never know who is listning, and just to clear it up, I am not racist against anyone or anything, I just get really fucked off with all the war and all the suicide bombers and all the shit, which leads to me making silly posts.

Once again, my appolagies, I didnt mean to offend you.

Oh we can respect their views, but they are telling us what we can and cannot do in our country. I take a very primative view on such thing (the simple answers are usually the best) if they dont like what we do in our country, then dont come here. Dont watch our TV channels dont listen to our radio or music, if you are offended by us so much then why not just leave us the fuck alone?

Or perhaps we should demand that in their country they stop burning our flags. I was greatly offended when I saw a load of arabs burning a British flag and then stamping it into the ground. Why dont I start protesting and kicking off over what they do? Why not? Because fuck all will happen. Because their country wont care. They are taking advantage of our "democratic" and orderly society. I say pull the plug. Stop shipping them the 400 billion pounds (apx 650 billion US $) of aid every year that we give them. Or lets stop sending them SKY TV, if they are so offended by our culture. I tell you arabs are mostly scum of the earth IMHO. We give them all this help and all this aid and still they fuck us about, the US invaded iraq because Saddam fucked us around with the oil prices even though WE give his country aid and money. But where does the money go? On his expensive palaces. My dad had the best view at the start of the war that would of saved hundreds of lives and billions of $ and ?; "We should of just nuked them, then gone in for the oil after ten years when the radiation was lower." And in a lot of way that statement is wrong and unjust, all of the innocent people in the affected areas would have had great suffering, but in other ways it would save us shit like this. TBQFH I think we should print more of those pictures just to piss them off, they dont like the way we rung things on our own land; The doors there pal, close it on your way out.

Well, how are you going to code for this? If you are going to use coding. All the coders I know dont have the software required to code .net but I spose you might well have the program.

Mapping this is source will take so much less time as the compile time in source is so bloody low its unreal. And no, not just because of the model useage. If I ported a map I am working on now into HL1 worldcraft and compiled with with not ents and just the brush work it would still take longer than it does in source with all the ents and models. Making the levels are faster aswell as Valve has put a lot of thorugh into their latest Hammer creation and the result is awesome.

I play more than I map these days, if you dont play a game then how are you supposed to make maps for it?

I get more fun from playing other peoples maps than my own, because when you make a map, its like you know everything that is going to happen, you know exactly what you have to do and how to do it.

When you play somone elses map its figuring out how to beat the level that makes it fun, unless its just a frag fest in which case the map is hardly worth playing.

in Techs and Magic Post #161079
About:

Techs and Magic is a source engine game concept I have been brewing up, please take into account that this is a concept and I am not asking for anyone to join a team or anything because there isnt one.

The Setting:

If any of you have ever played Theif 3, then imagine the setting for that and add in more technology. For those who dont know what I mean; Imagine a city based in medievil times. Taverns, City gaurd, a large castle in the middle, dark, crapmpt and gloomy. Now imagine rather than swords and shields (which still feature in my plan outline) imagine the gaurds having basic mass driver weapondry (guns).

Allong with this, magic and monsters are still present. You can still find potions, wizards and witches, enchanted elixers and magical items. Monsters such as you see in fairy tales, vicious Wolfs that walk on two legs and can carry guns and armour, massivly build Ogres that serve the City Gaurd (police), Large muscular Orks that always carry large battle axes wherever they go. Large robotic sentrys that are slow but extremely tough. Getting the picture yet?

Now, as I said about the guns, the story (which I will outline below) explains how you can have guns and such in this fantasy setting. After a brief moment googling I have found a few possible candidates which I feel would keep with the setting (weapons concepts from real guns). Remember that the guns wont be like modern day guns, they will be less advanced yet still have effective power.

The Weapons;

Allong side bows and arrows, crossbows, magical items, swords, sheilds and axes you can also find these weapons below.

The small and basic hand rifle, the standard issuse of the city watch, good accuracy but only moderate power, the younger and less experianced city watch will only be able to fire this weapon slowly whereas the more experiaced or "elite" troops will have a much faster load and fire rate. The player will be able to interchange his or her fire rate as primary fire will fire the weapon and secondary fire will cock the hand rifle for the next shot. Firing too fast will reduce accuracy greatly and lead to wasting ammo.

http://www.wildwestguns.com/Bushwacker/Bushwacker2.jpg

The highly advanced (for the setting) Auto Loading Rifle. A fully auto / semi auto rifle developed by the Sisters of Steel (notice the reference). This weapon is mainly used by the Sister of Steel however they do have contracts to manufacture them for the Millitary. Take into account this is only a basic outline for the weapon and the actual image I have in mind is much less advanced looking than this. Moderate accuracy and high rate of fire make this a weapon worth carrying, the only downside being the less powerful shots it fires. Primary fire fires the weapon where secondary fire will switch the weapon to semi auto and set the player looking down the sights for more accurate fire.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v408/darowden/10Cwsir5.jpg

Every game needs a shotgun, and here it is; The 'Bangor' or 'Bangors'. The image below is a base outline, this is going to be a weapon developed by the Orks and thus have much less finess. Single shot barrel and a manual load make this weapon slow to fire however its power is unmatched, its power dies off at longer ranges but at close to point blank this gun is the one to have. Primary fire will shoot the weapon and secondary fire will swing the butt of the gun up to hit enemies with, the butt of the gun will have a sharpe blade attached for extra damage.

http://www.hillsgunworks.biz/_images/pictures/22-250%203.jpg

I dont want to keep bombing you with weapon concepts so here is the last one; A bolt action rifle nick named 'Hock Shot' (Hot Rock Shot). Used and manufactured mainly by The assassins guild. Very accurate and powerful the only downside being its rather slow rate of fire and long reload time which is a menace due to its low clip capacity. Primary fire will of course shoot the rifle and secondary fire will attach the enchanted scope that comes with it that sticks to the rifle by some magical spell (and of course will let the player see down it).

http://behun8.srv.hu/pics/cod/mosin.jpg

The factions;

The factions are not set in stone, some may make it in if I get round to making this, some may not. Each is planned with at least 1 enemy (or allie) type. These include; The underground Assassins Guild (also includes the theifs guild), The Orks, The Orge Cast, City watch, Imperial Millitary, Sisters Of Steel, The school of the old ways, The Eaters Pack and The Church of Allmighty.

Basic story outline;

The world was plunged into chaos when some super powerful spell gone wrong shattered the boundries between the dimentions and mergened many worlds into one. Different times, different cultures and different creatures all mixed together and engulfed the Earth. After many years of chaos a new but strong peace was formed between most of the planets new inhabitance and once again peace reigned over the land, new cities were built and new technologys shared and sold, a prosperous time for all parties envoled. The story will start several years after the peace was formed.

You will start in a dream world, you dont know if its memory or fantasy, this will be the training course teaching you all the new crap you have to learn about the weapons and some of the basic faction outlines.

When the dream like world finishes you will wake up in small boat just outside the city limits on the forbidden coast, this is a very dangerous area with lots of nasty wild things waiting to jump out at you, you must get out of here, so you make your way allong the coast heading back towards civilization. Your head is badly injured and you dont remember anything but eventually you will reach and outpost of the city and be arrested by the city gaurds and thrown into a cell while you are examined (they dont want monsters and deamons sneaking into the city from the forbidden forest).

Eventually you are released and offered a job in the city gaurd, you have nothing better to do and your head is still injured badly so you accept to keep yourself provided for while your head heals and hopefully your memories return. Managing the outer farming communities is a pretty easy job for you and soon you prove yourself a very able watchman, so you are transfered to the City gaurd where things are more rough and your skills can be more useful.

I dont want to spoil anything but lets just say somone tries to eat you and discoveres somthing very strange about you, from there the story gets deeper as you try to find out what you are where you come from.

Well this is a very large post but remember this is just a basic concept, I had some spare time and was bored so I figured I would post it here to get some feedback from you guys. I figure this is too large a project to make all at once so I think if I ever do make it, it would be in chapters. So, any comments?

in Game project... Post #161008
Well said CP.

I think some of the main things you want to ask yourself is; Are people going to pay to play this? Is it THAT good and not just a bit of fun for a while and then not worth buying.

You want physics in a MMO? Dream on.

What you need to do if you are serious about this is not talk to people over the net. You want to find yourself a company (or start your own with a group of friends or people with similar skills and such) in real life. Work is a lot easier to handle when your team is at the end of a phone line or a short drive / walk away.

No major game has ever been made purely over the internet, if you want to make this game, find somone in real life, real life contacts who you can discuss the idea with. From what I am reading here you seem to be pretty well skilled in quite a few feilds. Take that to an employer. Dont just think you can jump on the band wagon and build your own game. Become a memeber of a Games Company and get a lot more experiance in the feild before you try to take on such an insanly large project.

This sounds really good Rimrook. Although I wouls suggest having an additional thing in the code: Some kind of sword or close combat weapon (Gunblade ;o http://www.rit.edu/~hll1858/imm/media/virtualroom/gunblade-vero.jpg?). More pistols and such. Better / more modern energy weapons and an upgrade system that allows you to find upgrades to make weapons stronger (like clip expanders, damage increasers, ROF enhancers ETC.

Then this mod of yours could be awesome. I really like the whole concept of a more adventure game rather than a "lol shootem up" and the EXP systems sounds great. Good luck with this.

Also, If I had about 10 func_rotating entities by eachother about 100 units away from eachother, would I see performance problems?
Depends what system / connection you have, I would say dont do it, try to keep the lag down to a minimum.

The red lights are good, but they are too bright. Lower the brightness to about 75 - 100 and it would look much better, probably 75 I would say.

If you want moving parts for the generators try to keep it down to a minimum. Perhaps one generator with an exposed inside and 1 fan would be good (would be funny if somone walked into it aswell trying to hide.) otherwise I would say having 10 moving parts in a row is a bad idea, generators of such magnitude dont have exposed moving parts and it would be easy to sabotage them.

A teslacoil type area would be cool, not somwhere the players can accidently walk into and get killed by it (like suspended above a room or behind a protective glass screen or somthing).

This map is looking great, make sure you ask me to help when you do the play testing ;)

I think more people would use the TWHL map vault if it was easier to navigate. I suggest a better filtering system and clearer text, on the resolution I use 1280X960 its quite hard to make out what each map is for, perhaps a file system so that CSS maps are all in one place, CS maps are all in one place HLDM - etc. Although it is possible to do this, technically, with the current system its not very user friendly.

I could build myself a PC (this is going back about a year BTW) for Apx. ?1,000 that in the shops, for the exact same setup, but prefabed, costed ?2,499.

Its so simple, you order the parts online, wait for them to be delivered then assemble them. I think a lot of people buy prefabed computers because they belive they will last longer and not break down as much. Personally I find its the other way around.

Also: Build Cube Maps for the next set of screen shots, this looks good.

Last two screenies wont load for me, but this is looking awesome.

My advice;

Remove 50% of the light ents and models in that coridoor and make all the remaining lights 50% brighter.

Make the outside dam area much much bigger, at the moment it looks like a lego dam. A dam in real life is titanic. The height is alright but make it longer, this will also mean the curve in the dam isnt so 'in your face' as it is now.

This looks like it could be really good, keep going.

EDIT: Pictures loading now, Dam actually looks a good scale, hard to tell with no comparison. :)

The coridoor full of generators wont be much fun with no cover, perhaps put in more objects of juggle the ones around in there so that you cant see from one side of the room to the other, and perhaps a walkway above that goes right through the room?

I can safley say that having been a HIT Moderator for over a year, your all correct.

The HIT Admins / Moderators have no conception of what is fair or acceptable. Granted their is one good moderator amoung them (Not going to name names) who is fair and just.

I actually got my moderatorship removed and then less than an hour later got banned from the site for a week for somthing that I didnt even do. But did the admin check or even talk to me to see my side of the story? Nope.

Then once I had explained that I had nothing to do with what had happened he unbanned me, but then kept my moderatorship away from me for 2 weeks! And I was totally innocent. Hence why I left, there are other reasons aswell, more serious ones. If you like, check here;

Exzibit A:
http://www.hl-improvement.com/forums/index.php?topic=2817.0

Anyway, as Rabid said, they all play a massive game of favorites, anyone who is new to the site can expect to get banned for starting a "hello" thread. The guy who owns the site (pays for the server) is never around, he doesnt really care what happens to the forums and makes bad discisions (IMO) about staff.

HIT is a mass of flame and spam, granted that the people who actually do anything never go near the off-topic sections and do make very good models in the modelsing areas. If you know whats good for you, stay away from HIT.

On a lighter note;

A few weeks ago me, Rabid, Mopx and a few others (sorry cant remember your names) all joined the HIT IRC channel to see how long it would take us to get banned. I dont have the exact logs but here is what I am working from memory (Correct me if I am wrong rabid);

(Up to this point rabid had said nothing).

Wolf-Kain: We have IP range blockers.
Rabid: ...Most forums have IP range blockers.
Wolf-Kain: Sigh
Wolf-Kain sets mode to +m

Yea, me and wolf-kain go way back, he is a total asshole who thinks he is right about everything but in actuality lives in a dream world of his own (He once told me he has his own mech).

Well anyway, enough ranting, as you can tell I have strong feelings (of hatred mostly) about HIT after being their for over a year (it took me 1 week to be given moderator ship, go figure).

Dont stretch decals!

The lighting is ok but as Ant said again, try to adjust the dust so that its not everywhere.

Yea, I am guilty of this aswell, my maps folder (before it got lost in a format) had around 40 maps in it, about 10 of them were actually nearly done. I always map somthing because I have had a cool idea or because I have seen somthing which I really like the concept of, but then I make that part of the map, I even plan out the rest of it to some extent, but then I just lose interest in it.

As WC dude said, I just put them to one side, but then with me that side gets bigger and bigger and bigger and OMG its own hard drive.

Looks good so far, I like the large overhang looking out into nothiness, very cool effect, especially in source.

Try to add at least 1 area where people wont expect you to be, like on the shed over the end of the tunnels on militia, if you run and jump from the wooden walkway with the knife you can get up there. When they come out of the tunnels they NEVER see it comming.

Areas like that which mean you have to play the map a fair bit to get the hang of all the little nooks and cranies is good. I would happily play test with you next time you are having one.

Well it looks very empty and bland, try to map somthing with "life" in it, not just large square rooms. Lighting looks ok, especially for a zombie map, nice and dark.

The archatexture needs work though, add more details, like (as said) barrels, boxes - anything. Just dont have square dark rooms full of zombies. ;)

Good luck with this, bout time some HL2 SP turned up.

The plans look ok, there is a big difference though to planning a map and actually making it. I plan my maps how I would build them in hammer in my head, working out which brushes would go where, which would clash etc. I usually just make a map as I go allong but I do mostly Single Player work so I can get away with it.

These plans look good, judging by the circles in the top plan I would say that pole is part of some kind of network, 4 of them, and each can be activated to unlock or activate an even bigger thing, like some super weapon or a "map gib" (like crossfire, but map gibs have many forms).

Not quite sure what that third picture is but it looks like some kind of machine, the detail is loverly.

What is this for? Looks a bit like CS:S from the screen shot.

This thread makes my want to cry...

None of us can prove it either way (on most of the subjects) so why dont we just drop the pointless thread? I mean its all well and fine discussing things but were just going round in circles here.
