Roadkill was backwards engineered from blender because the tech was free. Done so anyone can enjoy it without using blender itself.

Like it was any better hammer, lol. But seriously each has its own pros and cons.

alt + right-click = win in hammer.
and i never really liked ANY of the modelling texture mapping/unwrapping tools in any modelling programs i've used.. Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Milkshape... they could all be better / easier / more flexible.. but they're not.

Yeah Crollo, sort of like that. Except it needs more tiled backgrounds and <marquee>. And more animated gif. The contrast is spot on, though.

I made a clear video posting on youtube... yeah..!?

Yep thats the one, very easy to use to, just open it up, add you large video file, then save it out as HD720p and then click start.
(Make sure original screencast is 1280x720)

And crollo, what do you mean you wouldn't use it now? It works fine, so why would'nt I use this now.. lol

No, divx supports roughly any resolution you input, but it's outdated and extremely outperformed by the big players such as x264, h264, and soforth.

Sure, a comparison of DivX .avi encoding vs a H264 Matroska Encoding:

Both encodes have bitrate set to 904kbps, resolution of 540x288, and framerate of 20.

Filesize comparison between two identical bitrates:

The DivX encode comes out as being slightly larger, but how does this translate, quality wise?

Not good, it seems.
To gain the same quality as a 904kbps H264 encode, I have to increase the bitrate to a much higher level, and raise the filesize in the process.

Regardless, how the hell can you possibly think that for ANY given task, that a larger filesize with worse quality is acceptable?

It doesn't matter if it's going on youtube or such, because you're taking a longer time to upload for an inferior quality video, which in turn is going to be made even worse quality by the youtube conversion process.

"It's just for a youtube video" isn't an excuse.

That's like saying paying more for a inferior product just because you only need it for 'personal use' is alright just because you don't need it for other uses.

Point being, DivX is extremely outdated, outdone, and to use it is like using an original Xbox over an Xbox 360.

No matter how you see it, it's taking at least twice the filesize of a decent codec to gain quality that isn't even as good. It's fast. That's about it.

When did you turn into such a troll?
I can answer. For, Urby has become such a troll he cannot speak the truth, unless it is in a trollic manner.

It all started when he purchased a copy of the popular Duke Nukem: Forever. When reaching the end of the game, he suddenly found himself upset. Quickly, he stumbled to the window where he looked out, and he could see the horrors that were concealed in that game. He suddenly fell to the floor and began to evolve into something more.
The evolution took place in his brain, filling it with twisted ideas, and it grew hair. He quickly ran into the city in his underwear, learning humbleness. He used this power to post without regret. I had a similar experience.

And now, he has become a troll, ready to mess with any man's head. Run for your lives!

Looks nice, but the ceiling looks a bit odd because the fluorescent lights are square. And bent. Don't get me wrong, the brushwork is nice, but the combination of the brushwork and that particular light texture looks...unnatural.

Just a small minuscule annoyance, if you're to add light bulb models, then you should just change the entire 'inset' to a flat metal panel texture, it won't look good if you still use that texture. Other then that, points for detailing.

Can't suggest what to add if we don't know what you're trying to achieve from the scene.

@Archie: Dat GMod map. Seriously, great job. First screenie looks best, though.

@Joebama - Yeah, we need some information, but I'm gonna guess this is for Particle Fusion. Maybe add a door, make the terrain more bumpy, add some trees, perhaps some windows in the walls, a door. Maybe a security office. I hate the hell out of that texture. Looks like it belongs in a hotel room, not in the middle of a desert.

That mountain needs more hard edges.
Agreed. Modified it a lot, but it was actually already a lot bumpier than the screenshot shows. I've included a Kleiner this time for scale reference; when you get down to player level, the terrain is a lot rougher.

Posted 12 years ago2011-07-25 12:36:52 UTC Post #296997
I spent too long on the ssbumps of the rock and sand materials I made, as well as getting them to tile acceptably. Also, like I said earlier, it really doesn't seem too smooth from the player's perspective. It's only because I took the screenie from like 300ft in the air which highlights the soft shadows on the displacements that makes it look overly smooth.
