I just started sketching something, looked for a glass texture and was about to say that you forgot adding it. The thumbnail didn't look at all as a glass texture, but then I noticed the name :D.

Excuse me gentlemens but I haz question!

Is really the rule "no custom models" necessary? If so what does it mean?
  • Only models from the GCF-files in steamapps folder are allowed?
  • Can I use HL and CZ models in a CS map?
  • Or are we allowed to use any model that is already existing?
  • What aboot decals.wad?
Also, nice textures are nice and this is gonna be fun :)

I presume that "no custom models" means that if you have to move them from one folder to another, you're breaking the rules.
Strider said that the map won't be judged on models anyway, so there's very little point in using custom ones.

fx color has to be allowed its an engine function, not a texture. besides the textures being used arent changed.

the two carbon fibre materials (c31_metal2a, c31_metal2b) use a surfaceprop which only works in HL2 & episodes, not CSS or L4D or anything, so if you're mapping for them, change the vmt so that
"$surfaceprop" "combine_metal"
reads
"$surfaceprop" "metal"

There are only two light textures, that's kinda limited. Are we allowed to use light textures from halflife.wad? Because i think spot lights as well as large industrial lights are pretty common in industrial areas.

I say the only textures from halflife.wad that you're allowed to use are tool textures and light textures, nothing else.

My two cents: decals and overlays shouldn't be allowed. I originally thought the exact opposite, but I think that with the entire point of this competition being creating something unique with a limited palette, allowing decals would somewhat undermine that.

Lights for Goldsource, I'm not too sure about, though. Source mappers have the advantage of a very wide selection of light props, whereas Goldsourcers have to stick with those two included textures. Not sure how fair that is (or are the two engines being judged separately again?)

Actually doodle raises a good point, in order for it to be more thematic, a custom sky texture for the pack wouldn't hurt.

If every texture you wanted to use was in the set, that would defeat the entire purpose of the competition. You need to work with what you have available to create you entry. Now can everybody stop complaining?

And Strider, answer the damn decal question already!

I think we're lucky we got such a high-quality texture set. (Thanks to Archie and Strider)
The challenge is having a limited pallette. I have a few ideas sketched out but really... none of my maps ever follow a set structure.. just let the ideas flow and see what you can come up with. =]

But there are some things still unclear: What exactly do you classify as tool texutre.wads ?? Zhlt.wad I assume are there any more wads. which are classified as tool textures?

From the posts I've read on top it appears that decals will be forbidden is that correct if yes I have no problem with that. But I would like a clear confirmation.

Who exactly is the admin of this contest?

Are custom sounds allowed? There has been no answer for that question yet.

Please update this informations on the mainpage to that compo because others are also wondering about the same things. You should always make the descriptions as noob friendly as possible 'cause as you can see many are confused right now.

Can I also create my level lets say for Opposing Force for example instead of regular Half-Life1 or Half-Life2? Are there limitations or can we basically map for every gold source game or every source game that's officially created by valve?

Any texture which does not affect the visuals of a map is a tool texture. Examples of these are AAATrigger, Skip, Hint, Null, Origin etc. ZHLT.wad has all the ones you'll need.

Well its the whole experience of the map USING the textures. You all know how I like to go single player with my compo entries I wanna try to make a storyline. Custom sounds would greatley help me achieve this

I've already said this once before, but here it is again:

No custom content of any kind is allowed.

Also:

No decals or overlays
Using models and NPCs is allowed, but you cannot overuse them
Tool textures are the ones that aren't visible in-game. If you can see a texture when you play it, it must be from the texture pack.
You can use any official Valve game for your map.

Honestly, most of this is in the compo brief. Use your brains before asking questions!

relating to the texture sizes, if you scale down a big texture to .50 that is exactly twice the normal size, will it be same perormance-wise to a texture that is the normal size at 1.00?

The more i think about this compo, the more i'm really getting stoked about mapping for it.. = )

No, scaling down big textures causes worse performance then having a existing smaller texture at normal scale.

i scale my textures from 1.00 to 0.50 sometimes but we got much powerfull machines than in the day when HL1 was released so we can scale them a bit

Don't worry about performance, the judges have decent machines so it's not really an issue. If you do actually resize textures, give the new WAD or VTF a unique name so you don't cause conflicts in my game folders.
