Maybe I posted too soon. I was a little worried I'd inspire my competition, that's why I waited as long as I did.

I appreciate the nice comments, it feels good to know that this old dog still has some bite.

Uh game play elements uh, um my map is far too small to have proper game play elements within it, unless you're up for fighting 100 grunts at once.

Unfortunately this competition has completely coincided with the end of school. I've been concentrating solely on school lately. So by the time I'm done, I'd have around a week to compete against people with two months. And that'd be assuming I wasn't doing any sort of finishing-school...activities.

I somehow doubt anyone apart from rimrook has put the whole two months into this , I've been working on my entry on-and-off for a few weeks now , but I literally only have one hallway to show for it - and it's not even that great.

Come on now guys, dont be such wussies :P

This should be more motivation to you guys, to work more on your map and make it better, the spirit of competition :D

Its not about being 1st or last, its about giving the most you can into your work.

I put 4 hours into mine. I just figured I'd make a place with purpose, and made a science machine.

I've been working on "Something Else" so my modelling and mapping skills were actually a little dusted off.

Mine is now based in night-time, otherwise I cannot show off any fancy lighting since all of it is outdoors.

I have put all of the two months into this. I currently have a series of three maps, including a short thirty second-ish intro scene.

Posted 12 years ago2011-11-10 18:20:06 UTC Post #300654
Wish I had time to enter this one. Maybe i'll have more time for the next one. Perhaps over summer break? Great job everyone and you esp Rim. My mouth is watering.

I think you "skalls" can pull yours together and perhaps with more detail it could be really nice. I'd recomend against that sky though, perhaps the morning or night one. It might even be cool to darken the map down along with the sky and add some interesting ambient lights, hums, buzzes, zaps and sparks.

Anyone else having the same problem as me?

Just started today, I just installed a windows 7 update for 64bit, (shutdown and restarted) and now I can't open Hammer 3.5 (or 3.4). I even uninstalled the windows update and restarted, and it still wont open. It shows up in task manager, then the entry in task manager disappears before opening up the program interface.

I also tried running in different compatibility modes... nothing... :(
Posted 12 years ago2011-11-11 17:19:52 UTC Post #300670
idk, i've never had a problem with hammer or any related mapping software on my win 7 ultimate x64.

Like everything other time there is a compatibility problem in windows 7, you obviously tried(logged in as administrator) right-clicking, Run as administrator, correct?

Last thing i can think of is to install hammer on another computer and simply copy the vhe directory over to your win 7 computer. You'll have to redo your configurations and preferences, but everything else will work fine.

For some unknown reasons, my CPU (an AMD Phenom II X4 955) doesn't like ZHLT anymore. Whenever i compile a pretty good sized map OR a smaller map with high level of detail, my CPU temperature skyrockets up to 50°C and according to SIW (System Information Tool), the maximum temperature of my CPU is 50°C so that's cutting it kinda close. What the fuck? I already experienced multiple instant reboots during map compilation, probably due to the temperature going over 50°C. It was never a problem before so why is it now?

I recently cleaned my CPU and added a new layer of cooling paste, the old layer was completely dried up. Maybe it's was not enough?

Only if i disable the three other cores (using the affinity settings) and leave the main one on, the temperature is acceptable but the compilation process takes a lot longer to complete.

just wow. i know this is a dumb question before i ask it, but did you try the x64 shlt tools?

I'm not saying it's your having an AMD processor is causing your problems, but it's stories like these that scare me away from anything other than intel cpu...

Have you tried slightly underclocking your cpuz at all to prevent the overheating and still save your faster compile time?

Ever since i got myself this computer, which was built in 2009, as well as Windows 7 64 bits, i've been using the 64 bits version of ZHLT. It was NEVER EVER a problem, I've compiled tons of stuff with it.

My CPU has been overclocked a couple of month after i got this computer in 2009 and i could compile anything without things getting too hot.
This is no longer the case.

50C is nothing.
Posted 12 years ago2011-11-11 22:02:55 UTC Post #300677
Like potatis_invalid said, 50C is nothing. 50C for a processor is like 37C for a human body, when it starts reaching over 70C is when you can call it "hot" and when it passses 90C is when you should start worrying. Anyway, they won't be damaged until after 110-120C, but at that temperature the system shuts itself down to prevent damage.

50C is nothing.

I have no idea at what temperature my processor is running. But

50C is nothing.
Posted 12 years ago2011-11-11 22:12:51 UTC Post #300679
Well, maybe there's another cause for the sudden reboot, don't know what though. Faulty RAM perhaps? I will test that.

My CPU idles at 30°C and as soon as i start compiling, it skyrockets to 50°C within second. Is that even normal?

Nah, i don't think it'll make much of difference, just looked and it's not really that dusty compared to when i added the new layer of cooling paste, it was a lot more dustier.

But i'm gonna do it anyway.

I think I remember seeing on this thread we are allowed to make duplicates of the light textures so we can use different light values in our rad file... right?

Could we also make a copy of one of the textures and rename it to make an additional !liquid texture????

I want to make one of the textures animate like the liquid textures do (in goldsource).

And no luck with running hammer 3.5 (or 3.4) on win 7 still. I'm stuck having to use 3.3.... : and then use XP virtual pc to run 3.5, but using the mouse to maneuver the camera is all messed up... :(
Posted 12 years ago2011-11-17 12:09:53 UTC Post #300848
The rad thing is fine. What texture do you want to change into water? I'm letting people change the water texture to a scroll one if they want, so I don't really see a problem, as long as the texture itself isn't modified.

has there ever been this many questions about the rules of a compo???

Nope, must be a new record.

It's good though, I'm learning stuff! Next time we do this competition I'll be a lot more prepared.

Lol dude really? hahaha.

Next competition will have guidlines a mile long.

As I did begin to enter, there weren't enough "instructions" because i'd want to add something to my plans but first ask if it was ok and then wait for the response waisting time. I guess it's because of the competition's restrictive stipulations.
Posted 12 years ago2011-11-20 04:57:04 UTC Post #300906
One good thing about this compo is that it isn't limited in number. You can slap a new theme onto it and it's a new compo.

Just had an "out of memory" crash
I lost my map completely.
everytime i go to open it, it tries to rename it from an autosave.. ugh this might be the last straw here...

hold that thought... restart of SDK and HL2 fixed it.. lost a good 15 minutes of solid progress though... must.. continue...
