Had a good night, actually. Couple of beers down by the Yarra and good conversation with Mitch, Elof and family.

I did notice that Penguinboy, but you weren't obvious enough about the way you posted it. Mine has a nice headline so everyone reads it and must know more!!! ;)

I'm not that bad am I? :(

In the announcement they mentioned that the first release will be playable up until Lambda Core. I've long suspected (as a lurker on the forums) that Xen was not being completed along with the rest of the mod, but tbh the main reason I want Black Mesa is for Black Mesa, not Xen.

King of Limbs was an absolute piece of shit apart from Lotus Flower.

All their other albums are genius. In Rainbows is my favourite.

Seeing them in concert later in the year. They haven't been to Australia since 2004. Pretty pumped.

Average walking speed is about 5 km/h (~3 mph). 25km in 3 hours is not a walk.

I managed to make the jump on the second attempt once I'd figured out the 'solution.' I guess it wasn't the intended one! I assumed the light bridge was there purely to block the player and the lasers/wall there to confuse players.

I should also point out that I again did not recognise the wall behind the lasers as portal-able immediately.

AND the box needs a dispenser. If it is fizzed the puzzle becomes impossible.
Commented 13 years ago2011-07-10 14:13:35 UTC in vault item: sp_vengeance Comment #19331
To be honest what confused me most about the light bridge jump was the lasers with the portalable wall behind it. In hindsight, I have absolutely no idea what purpose that served. I spent ages mucking around with that wall, the cube and the light bridge to no avail.

As it stands, it is there merely to confuse players and provide an insta-death for anyone who slightly mistimes the jump once they work out the proper solution. I certainly think that section of the map would be much more intuitive and less punishing if that wall and the lasers didn't exist.

Wasn't a big fan of the labyrinth section, satch. All the glass walls vanishing and stuff was just confusing. It took me ages to work out that I had to fling myself either side of the light bridge too... maybe a little sign would be helpful.

Aside from that, you already know my thoughts on the other two areas. They haven't changed really.

I'm with Archie, if you're going to force the use of turrets to block the lasers you need to either make the turrets indestructible or have some sort of turret dispenser.

I forgot to add that to a player who has played through Portal 2, those lasers automatically mean AVOID PAIN. You're basically relying on a player to test whether the lasers hurt or not and I can see why a lot of players would be reluctant to even try. Not to mention you have a laser wall which DOES cause damage... the inconsistency damages the player's ability to solve the puzzle intuitively I think.

I don't understand satch, is there a way to take down the forcefield without using the turrets or what? The first time I'd already destroyed all of the turrets using the lasers and was left at a complete dead end. This shouldn't happen. Why not just have a box lying around somewhere?

Also, the wall behind the laser wall needs to be better lit, I had no idea it was portalable for quite a while whilst I walked around at a complete loss as to what I was supposed to do.

I'm not gonna rate it just in case there is a better way of doing it that I'm not aware of but I still really did not enjoy the suspended part of the puzzle, sorry satch.

I've met up with Ant down here in Melbourne a couple of years back. Also kraken saw me at uni once but I didn't see him and was sprinting for the train, so I don't think that counts.

Also, dewdle/doodle attempted to meet up with Ant a couple years ago at some university presentation night where Ant's animation was being showcased. This failed miserably as dewdle didn't know what Ant looked like and ended up speaking to a random thinking it was Ant for upwards of 45 minutes.

Awkward.

Not sure what to think satch.

I don't like the turrets. There's no warning to let you know they're around the corner when you first enter the chamber. I'm not even sure they're necessary at all tbh.

As for the puzzle, it was okay. I'm not sure what could be done to improve it really, I just don't find the whole concept of it particularly interesting.

Also, brush with the button/wall needed to light bridge down to cube room has a missing surface, must be nodrawed.

Yeah, external download link works fine.

As for the puzzle, this version is much improved. I was pleased to see you implement some of my changes (and some of your own). I think the compromise is probably better than either of our first versions.

Wish there was a way to change my rating, it deserves a fairly solid 4 stars in its current state.

Good job satch.

satch, as far as i can tell you've just reuploaded the old files lol. Modified on the 2/6/2011. Tried the one on thinkingwithportals too and that was the same thing...

Satch, I've just fired off an email (to the address in the readme) attached with an updated version containing a whole lot of changes which I felt made the puzzle more intuitive. You may find it too easy. Still, I'd appreciate if you got back to me with your thoughts.

Oh, and thanks for the source vmf. Great gesture, imo.

I can't remember if I heard the ticker or not, but I was thinking those light blue button indicators leading to the dispenser, with the diminishing circle which usually indicates a delay of some sort would probably be a good idea. I hope you know what I'm talking about, they're surprisingly hard to describe lol.

Might be worthwhile putting the angled surface used to catch the cube a little lower at less of an angle so it's easier to jump onto perhaps. Or move the glass cased area back a bit to allow a bit more of a run up.

I think you've got the basis of a good puzzle here, the execution is just a bit off. Need to give the player more cues rather than just stumbling around 'til they find the right solution.

Since you've included the vmf I might give the SDK a bit of a twirl and see if I can implement any of my proposed changes. If I do ever get around to doing it I'll shoot you an email with the copy of the vmf.

Yeah I just did it without cheating. I'm sorry to say satch but it's just not intuitive at all...

It took me a couple minutes before I found the way to portal into the little glassed-off button room.

Once I got in there and pressed the button, there is nothing to indicate there's any kind of delay on the release of the cube, or in fact that the button is connected to the cube dispenser at all.

Use of the light surface to catch the cube worked alright, but having to make the jump to reach the cube is kind of difficult especially with such a short run up space. (idk if that's what you're supposed to do, i saw no other way)

Once you've got the cube, you place it on the button and think you've solved it, but then of course you need a way of taking the cube off to actually rise to victory! I didn't think using the light surface for this was particularly intuitive either, I actually found the solution by randomly shooting a portal in the right spot lol.

Not a bad effort for your first go I guess, probably better than anything I could come up with. I guess it's difficult to see if a solution is intuitive since if you're the one who made it, of course it is!!!

Keep it up, maybe submit on thinkingwithportals if you haven't already. More likely to get feedback there.

3 stars.

I'm a catholic and I have absolutely no issue with gay marriage whatsoever.

Christian fundamentalists shit me off. How can anyone take a book with dragons and giants and all kinds of messed up ficticious animals and believe every word?

The most important part of the bible, to me, is the passage where Jesus basically overrides the Ten Commandments and gives us all one very simple message: treat others as you'd like to be treated.

So why stop people from doing something everybody should have a fundamental right to do?

biggest pain in the ass. i managed to get it working a couple months ago, it's all about getting studiomdl to run for the right game and such. i had to make a simple batch script or whatever. this is what i had for l4d2:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\bin\studiomdl" -game "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2" %1
pause

then you just look at the attempted compile and fix any potential errors... idk this'll help lol.

but seriously, my deepest sympathies.

pretty guitar though. even as a guitarist myself, i've never really understood the need to have multiple guitars. i've got a stratocaster, some no name 3/4 size electric and a nylon acoustic and that more than satisfies any needs that i have.

edit: forgot to add that KOTOR is not the bargain of the day. DirT 2 is. get it. now. no seriously. right now. best looking and most fun racing game i have ever had the pleasure of playing (and i've played a few).

I saw paramore when they were in Aus for Soundwave in February this year and they were absolutely incredible. I'd probably put them at about the same level as Muse for putting on a fucking awesome live show, although Muse have dropped off significantly in recent years.

I was going to go and see them again (they're playing here on wednesday) but the tickets were like $80+ and the venue is seating only... huge fail. But now the date is approaching and I'm somewhat regretting not buying tickets.

been playing a couple games recently with Ant, it's still good fun imo it's just hard to find time with friends when everyone is so busy.
