I think I'm spending more time looking at props and admiring walls than actually progressing the game. I'm like a laughing baby right now!

[EDIT] SPOILER ALERT!

[EDIT 2] Seems like when I start the Apprehension campaign the mod crashes.

As of writing, there are now less than 24 hours before Black Mesa is released. After losing and regaining interest a couple of times during it's development, I am now pretty psyched to think it will be available in less than a days time.

BLACK MESA

Do you have any plans? Are you just going to sit and power through it in a single session or play a bit at a time, savoring every moment. Are you having a day off work or school to play it? Are you going to record a let's play, or are you planning to review it?

Personally, I will be going to work as normal since the countdown ends at 15:45 for me. Little point in skipping work to wait around all day. What I will do however is give my wife a call in order to start the download as soon as she can. :P

As for playing it, I will no doubt play through it in large chunks, maybe 3 sittings, and I plan on recording gameplay in order to do either a "Gentleman plays" series of 10 minute vids or 3 or 4 short highlights videos with captions and whatnot.

So... do tell...

For the past week I was:
  • getting scammed in games
  • watched a game about ditching a girlfriend (see #1 below)
  • played a bunch of super mario world hacks, none of which I could beat legitimately (see #2 below)
  • watched an anime about an MMORPG only to find out later that it gets explicit and R-rated
  • Tried out E.Y.E Divine cybermancy (see #3 below)
1. I watched a playthru of what can be considered the shortest visual novel ever, about you trying to ditch your closely attached girlfriend. The entire game was in sepia tone and there was something very wrong about the whole affair. Needless to say, the very life of the protagonist was hanging in the balance.

2. Played 4 hacks (or mods, same idea) of super mario world. I was able to beat none of them. One had a coding problem where bowser's castle opened but the path didn't so I couldn't go there; the hack was riddled with a bunch of other problems as well (such as levels being blurry because the transition effect screwed up)

In another hack, it was so difficult (imagine playing mario with NO MUSHROOMS AT ALL anywhere) that I gave up. I'm too lazy to play a game with savestate spamming.

In yet a third hack, I was able to beat this boss but the boss room didn't register its defeat because a lone goomba was left in the room. I was unable to get rid of the goomba because in SMW you can't kill goombas directly; you can only throw them into other enemies. I gave up on that one.

In the 4th hack I got all the way to Roy's castle where you must get thru THREE AREAS, two of which are AUTO SCROLL LEVELS. In both autoscroll levels, you must run like a mofo to jump from springer to springer avoiding spikes and landing on 1-unit long ledges. It was getting boring. I made it into Roy's room but STUPIDLY DIED when he only needed one more bop.

3. I tried out a demo of E.Y.E Divine cybermancy, a source engine FPS-RPG game on steam. All I can say is, it's a bit too complicated for me. Theres too many skills and no quick way to access them: Theres super jumping, super sprinting, cloaking, healing, and about 10 others, with a possibility for maybe 30 more skills. While your menu is open you are VULNERABLE to enemy fire. The weapons have iron sights and multiple fire modes, and unfortunately aren't very strong. I keep getting killed by these armor clad samurai creeps armed with better weapons. And what's worse, they have a respawn point right outside my starting room, so there's pretty much an endless stream of them. I couldn't go 1 block without getting swarmed by like 5 samurai creeps.

There's a money purchase system that's quite widespread in the game, with many possible ways to develop your character. The focus of this game is obviously on skills and abilities development rather than on weapons loadouts. I'd recommend this if you are good at micromanagement of about 30 or 40 odd skills. Otherwise it might be too overwhelming for you. (By comparison, borderlands had 1 skill per character.)

Yeah, so, not particularly thrilled today.

Normal Mapping Tutorial - I probably made this for the community, but I'm sure I also created it for me. I tend to forget how to work with textures and how to make bump maps, so this video will be a useful reference in the future.

I've used GIMP, the normal map plugin for Gimp and VTFedit. It's 7 minutes long.

For those of you who lack a good internet connection, let me warn you: it is available in glorious FullHD resolution. I am just normally linking the video here, so it will probably take you to the 480p version :P.

I recorded the unboxing of my new GTX 680 this morning.

A very generous friend gave it to me. I have taken care of his daughter a few times.

An idea came up to my mind today.

Let's see if you like the pilot "news": TWHL News.

[EDIT] Published new "news": Uncontrolled experiment on the verge to cause an unnatural disaster?

I disabled the access to search engines, so the site is pretty much private unless it's linked to.
I'd like some tagline suggestions.

I said this is a "pilot news" because I suspect some people won't appreciate this. If this things proves to be entertaining, I'd like to add more authors( I still have to study the art of making news, especially... pamphlets, which require a vast knowledge of quotidian culture).

I start my new job in 10 hours. Nervous as hell.

This is my first non-freelance job in three years and it's with the second biggest post-production facility in Scotland.
Flerp.

I know I'm going to love it, but my stomach is still doing somersaults over this.

I am back in Windows. After some testing I'm guessing my main hard drive got a few bad sectors that happened to directly affect the Windows boot files. I formatted the affected partition and reinstalled Windows and I'm back where I was before all this happened.

I have a lot of junk to install now, but by blindly copying some folders (not knowing it would work) I managed to backup and restore all my browser settings including history and all my mail was seamlessly inserted back into Thunderbird.

The only thing I forgot to copy was the "My pictures" folder in My Documents but it was 99% junk images so I don't really care. Very little was lost, if anything.

So, to anyone that happens to be interested, here are the folders you have to copy if you are locked out of your system and can't make a proper backup:

Firefox, including all bookmarks and history:
C:Documents and Settings<yourname>Application DataMozilla

Thunderbird, including all mail, plugins and settings:
C:Documents and Settings<yourname>Application DataThunderbird

Just copy these folders and replace them into your new Windows installation (after these programs are already installed) and everything will be exactly as you left it, as if nothing had ever happened.

I had one messed up day yesterday. I went to this doctor, not sure what the name of is, basically she specialises in the Oral area, so mouth, nose, ears etc.
I went there because I had a sore throat problem, and she said, let's check your ears! So I was like ok!
She showed me that they were blocked with some little camera, I was like ew, and she told me she would clean them......I wouldn't say it was a mistake, but damn was it one of the worst experiences of my life.
For those daring to read; First they sticked some hose thing into each ear, flushin water into it, it felt so nasty... like a storm happening inside my ear. Next, she started sticking something pointy into my ear, it went quite far, when I thought that was far enough, she stuck it two times further. I was clenching myself in that chair like there was no tomorrow. I can't explain the feeling, I've been to the dentist many times, I've had my teeth drilled, pulled, I've had metal bracers. I thought that was bad, but that was nothing compared to this.
Only a bit later did I see what she stuck into my ear, It was some long needle like object, which wasn't straight either, it had constant curves, she might have spun it around a couple times too xD

Then whilst I was still dazed, she proceeded to telling me that the tools they just used weren't sterilized, so she would now have to sterilize my ears. My reaction - wut? She basically put cotton balls drenched in spirit into both ears, my face was burning for 30 minutes.
That was not very nice at all......

BUT! and some of you may be wondering... Did It work? Do I hear better now?

The short answer is YES!
The long answer is: I can actually hear about 25% better now, everything seems very loud for me, but I'm sure that will pass. The thing I am more thrilled about, is that I can now hear a lot more sounds! Sounds that I didn't even know existed.
Apparently my ears were so blocked that I couldn't hear sounds such as clothes rustling, small objects hitting the floor, water is a lot louder now too. I got onto the computer and started using the mouse and suddenly realised; the mouse makes clicking noises!
Lol haven't listened to music yet, should be interesting.
It's like my ears pick up more frequencies now, when when they were limited to a smaller amount before. quite cools.

I coded a random headline generator today.
You can download it here.

Be sure to let me know what you think about this first version!

If anyone doesn't know what to do with .7z files, you can use either 7-zip or Winzip/Winrar to open them.
Also, don't poke around the site or share the link around too much. It's a hideous school project website from a year ago, and the free host doesn't allow for much bandwidth. You are free to put up mirrors if you like, though.

"The balcony datacenter"
What better way to use your old hardware than to throw it in the balcony and run a HL server on it :)

Not long ago i aquired a crappy UPS to add some redundancy incase power decides to be a troll and not work. I will probably hook a car battery up to it so that it holds the power longer.

My dog, Marty, was euthanized today, after having a relapse of a surgically-treated growth that was likely spread throughout his body.
Always ready for a walk or run, and rarely able to stay still when a camera was around, Marty was my roommate, my best friend, my brother. I’m not ashamed to admit that I bawled like a baby watching his last moments this morning, nor that I’m still fighting back tears as I write this. I can only hope that now he’s hunting alongside foxes in heaven, or chasing raccoons up a tree. Goodbye, my dog. Goodbye, my friend. Rest in Peace.
