It requires a certain amount of paranoia to not like steam, microsoft etc.
If you don't have this paranoia, you will never understand people who have it.
It can be a great advantage to have this paranoia.

I think you should become a more experienced mapper, before people can rely on your oppinion about other maps.

Why don'T you just open that awp_knives map with a text editor and take a look at the entity settings?
Just search for "wad", all entity data is listed below that line.

When models stand on entities, they get their brightness values from the world face below them.
Either the ground below the door is dark too, or there is nothing under it.
Did you NULL texture the ground under the door?

Well, if you multiply the quality of those with a high number, you'll get what I can create when I take my time.
Actually those maps are products of a suddend idea that I got during a lan-party. I created them all in very few minutes, that's why there is nothing cool to look at or play around with.
But it's good that you liked them.
I have access to IRC, so we could talk on the TWHL channel or so.
I could also install ICQ, but I don't have MSNM.

How did you make the blood?

1. The author can vote.
2. Everybody can vote multiple times.

There are other ways to find out how things are done.
You can easily look at the entities of a .bsp with a text editor.
If you want to have a certain contruction from a map, just make screenies and rebuild it.
Decompiling is a thing that only noobs do.
Most people that have distributed own maps, have enough respect of other's work.

Use spirit!
You can let it aim at the player, but not follow him.
But you could put one camera into every room and trigger the respective camera when the player enters the room.

Half-Life has sounds for those too.
Just extract your .pak file and check out the 'weapons' folder.
You can use Winamp too. Just rightclick a folder and play it in winamp, it'll automatically enque all the sounds files inside the folder.

Could you post the r_speeds with your screenies?
As for the glass, just reduce the renderamount and use a darker/dirtier texture.

You cannot get a level back into it's state before it was compiled.
The compilers do several alterations to the entire map.
Try decompiling one of your maps and you'll see what I mean.

Yeah! Blender is the best 3d design program you can get for free.
The interface really differs from the more common programs, but it is much better to handle after you got into it.
And you don't really need a good understnading of 3d-modelling.
I didn't have much either when I started. Just download all tutorials you can find on google an work through them.

All HL updates after 1110 are steam only. Codename: Gordon is steam only.
