I haven't played de_kalt, but wtf? Seriously, I played mario_world and I fail to see what's so impressive about that map. It's a 3 star map. I Personally noticed some bad design choices in general. Besides that, it's a badly thought out killbox imho. But I won't judge on gameplay without having it played online. Architecture and texturing is awfull.

And no, i'm not hating on Mario, but i've played much better Mario maps from Doc.

Ow cmon, you can run around in it and enjoy the scripts and architecture.
Please don't say that the actual map in HL wasn't playable either..
Take a look at the work and time that went..
Just because it's a remake, doesn't mean Ansith hasn't put effort in the map.
Your map simply isn't in the same league as them in general.

Theirs are full-size carefully designed levels from scratch.
Ansith had 1 fucking screenshot to base it off. There is more to that map than the lobby. Just because it's a remake doesn't mean it isn't carefully thought it. Seriously dude....you should know better.

Not bad, not bad.

I'd have to comment on the second screenshot tho.
That vent looks wrong and kinda outta place.
Also, I couldn't help but wonder why the lamps have a white glow (on the steel cage thingy around the actual lightbulb) on them while producing dark yellowish light. But heh, this could just be me neatpicking or the way you screenshotted them. :)

Well, I gotta be honest, some things are a bit unclear now. For example, the stickies could use a slightly darker orange line to seperate them more easyly from the other threads. And well, there are some bugs, but that's logical. In the end, TWHL3 is a good change in a dark period. :glad:

I can't believe dm_alpestrine is getting the title of 'map of the year'. It's probably because most people here seem to worship anything that comes outta Rimrooks ass.....but lets stay on-topic now. :nya:

The map has a awesome atmosphere. Mainly thanks to the lightning, but the architecture does help setting a environment. But that's about it. Gameplay wise, the map is badly designed imho. Looks just don't cut it alone. I know everyone disagrees with me on this point, but Rimrooks maps are all the same. Lovely looking castle themed maps with bad gameplay.

Grats Rimmie. YOU'RE A WINARRRRRRRRRR ;)

I can't exactly remember when I first started playing HL, all I know is that HL was the first game I got in touch with and that I played it and its mods for many years. And still do... but that's mostly because I got troubles handling Source. :(

Sadly the community isn't that alive anymore.
I miss those good days playing Vampire Slayer, Team Fortress Classic and Firearms. Those good ol' regular server knowing everyone always full and alive playing in clan kinda days! :nya:

Actually, they were first . Their mod is sidescrolling multiplayer only though, which I've decided to not implement to avoid competition.
So what if they're first? They're a lot of mods with the same idea. They're a lot of mods out there that includes 1 zombie that eats someone, he becomes zombie etc etc...for example! They're are two Firearms 2 mods for source. I don't see any of them stopping because of that.. Another example!

You should add side-view multiplayer imho. Add some power-ups aswell, to both side-view and topdown-view. Like 'extra dmg', 'immune to dmg shield', 'extra speed', 'transparent'. They would last 10-20 sec or something. It be quite entertaining to play flat-life on a server, that switches between side-view/topdown-view maps every 10 mins.

I can already see the promotion trailer..

Imho, you should add a topdown view multiplayer mode. Like that flash game stick arena. Then you might even create a community around the game on its own. :^_^:

I'm not voting for Map of the Year. I don't play any CS and I haven't played any custom HL2DM maps this year either. That leaves me with HL1DM and HL1SP, and well, there isn't much too choose from. I could pick 3 maps, but really, they might be the best of the bunch, they don't deserve 'BEST MAP OF THE YEAR'. :death:

I played that mod and was totally unimpressed with the mapping and gameplay, so much that I gave up after the first couple maps.

I dunno, the 50ies wall mixed with the more industrial wall on top just looks wrong. But I guess that's just me. :rly:

On a other note, my map is coming along nicely. I should post some more hammer shots for you bunch to flame on anytime soon. :)

I do agree tho. Minimicus was a mod with a nice plot, and I really enjoyed it. But I found it short and everything looked kinda plain.

And I'm suprised about Life's End, I actually stopped playing Life's End after a while because I didn't enjoy it. The general level design of Life's End was poor aswell.

But heh.. Different people, different tastes. :crowbar:

HL1 is old. I think it's time to move on.

Besides that, the only HL1 based community that is really active is CS..

Heh, I was shocked at my results..

1. HL: Uplink Extended 1.0.
This mod is pure quality. I was suprised this ended up at 1 in my list tho. I've played a whole lot of better stuff than this, but shockingly, they either came from Kasperg or other sites.
2. Intake.
I've played better DM maps than this, even on TWHL, BUT, this map was the first DM map that really showed me how nicely you can use HL textures, so it has speceal meaning for me. Besides that, it's a great map.
3. Carbaseus.
The first time I played this map, I was simply amazed.
While gameplay is doubtable, the architecture is lovely.
4. Ruled By Insanity.
A great compo entry. I was quite impressed.
5. Gungod.
I've had so much fun on this map when Muzz hosted a HLDM server for TWHL. It just deserves mentioning.

If Kasperg didn't remove all his maps, he would have 3 outta 5 in my list. I didn't look at CS maps or HL2 stuff. I'm not interested in CS and for HL2 I rather visit sites that focus on HL2. I find it hard to measure goldsource stuff to source engine stuff anyway.

I can't play Timefall btw, the download is broken.

Played the demo.

It's a bit buggy and needs some fixes, but it's a really cool idea. I'm most certainly going to try mapping for this a bit... just for the heck of it. Jump puzzles ftw! :D
I think it should be mentioned that this isn't actually 2D at all, it's just a side-scroller. But it's still completely awesome

In general, I think TWHL needs to focus more on Source, i'm sure we'll get more regulars and members if we make some more Source tutorials and stuff with each other. We got a solid goldsource mapping community and I think we gotta do our best to keep that alive, and be proud of, but it wouldn't hurt if we expend more to source mapping......goldsource is slowly dieing and you can't deny that.

But I do know what I am talking about- I have played TF games since late 99
Ow cmon, that sentence alone clearly points out you want a TF game that is almost the same as the others. Some people just don't..

You don't like change, TF2 has no concs, so its wrong, the medic isn't offense like in the other TF games, so its wrong, TF2 hasn't got the same weapons as in the other TF games, so its wrong.

I rest my case.

I early said I respect your opinion, well, I now lost that respect. You just can't seem to give me valid arguments to stand by your opinion. I'm not even trying to change your opinion, i'm just giving valid arguments why people want TF2, but you only seem to think people want TF2 for the graphics. You gotta know, that the guys who made the first TF on quake joined valve to make TFC on the HL1 engine, the TFC you so dearly loved, these same guys now made TF2, i'm sure they kept the basic elements that TFC is about. You really don't think Valve doesn't care about gameplay do you? Valve made HL1, HL1DM, HL2, HL2DM, TFC, DMC... all great games with great gameplay.

Btw, who stated custom made maps suck?

TF2 seems to push forward the concept of the team, moreso than TFC ever did. And the art style is rippin'.

Every single Source mod (with an exception or two) had at least 1/3 of the already overused and fuck-boring default eastern european models and textures. TF2 is something fresh and I love that.

Exactly, the Medic has always been an offense class, but from my experience, which is a lot, they also healed- A LOT. Now you do realize, that no one will even play the medic, because they will grow very bored of just healing people? That's the mentality Valve has taken; the way they have changed everything, people will get very bored very fast.
When are you fucking going to open your eyes and see that not everyone wants a clone of TFC that FF attempt to be!

From the way you're sounding, change is a bad thing and I strongly disagree with that. And don't give me that 'It's my opinion' crap, I know it is, and I fully respect your opinion, but that doesn't mean I can't argue and disagree can I now?

Once again, the medic should do what it supposed to do, heal, because well...he's a medic....duh! Sure, in TFC the medic healed but his main focus was to get the flag. If a soldier was attacking against defense, the medic would take advantage of that and snitch the flag away while the soldier was getting fragged. He wouldn't go and heal the soldier, but in TF2 he will, because he'd simply die if he went alone, besides, he can actually heal from distance now and go invunerable, spam taunts and gogo boom boom headshot! Maybe you think healing is boring, who knows, maybe you're right, but in certain games, I actually prefered healing people over killing people.

But then again, we'll have to wait and see till TF2 comes out, sadly I won't be able to play the beta on monday, so i'll have to wait a month.

To each his own, if you like the way FF is, then fine, play FF, while i'll enjoy myself fragging people in TF2. ;)

You really think people want TF2 just for the new graphic look? Ow cmon, you can't seriously be thinking that now can you?

I want TF2 because Valve actually did something about class roles. The Medic in TFC and FF is a flag getter, but seriously, a Medic (Read the fucking name plz..) is supposed to be the healer in TF, which isn't the case in TFC and FF. I think these are good changes.

I want TF2 because Valve defined the characters.
I want to kill someone with the Heavy and scream 'CRY SOME MORE!!' and do a victory dance..

I want TF2 because not every class has a crowbar as melee weapon. I want TF2 for the new game modes, instead of just constantly get a flag and cap it.

AND YES, ofcourse, I want TF2 because of the awesome new graphics. They fit the games unrealistic frag fest..

I tried FF and I found it decent.

Level Design

I first started out in the map 'Cornfield', I was really disappointed at the crappy level design of this map, I never really liked Cornfield in TFC, but in FF it looks almost exactly like HL2, with the combine stuff and all..
I then got a taste of 'Crossover', I really got a Quake-ish feel to this map, but I must admit, this map looks pretty awesome! :biggrin: Then I got my share of 'Aardvark', a new map between the classics. I think this map looks decent, but the layout really sucks mah' balls.
As last, I got to try 'Push', this was never a populair map in TFC, as a matter of fact, most people hated it. The layout is almost exactly the same, so I don't see any difference coming in that. I really got a CS:S feel to this map, another bad thing that I noticed, was that the supposingly grass was purple with stripes, you know what I mean..

Models

Well, I can be really short about this, the player models suck. The weapon models are decent, some are nice, some are not.

Overall Gameplay

I think the classes are decently balanced, judged from the time I played. Pyro is fun to play, since I can actually kill people with him now. I played for a lil' less than 2 hours, and I played about 1 hour of Pyro. :P The HWGUY can overheat his minigun, which I think is a nice adjustment to just holdin' teh MOUSE1 button..

Overall Opinion

FF has taken a step in the right direction, but for me it plays too much like Quake mixed with the ol' TFC and generaly looks too much like HL2. This most certainly isn't a game I see myself playing a lot but despite all of this, with the right updates, this could be a great game for those who like it. I think TFC is more fun than FF.

I personally want my taste of TF2, which seems awesome.

If you preloaded TF2, you can get taunts if you unpack, some guy did that and put it on the internet... pyro has only 4 taunts, and the sniper has 40!!

I'm very dodgy about subscribing on internet, so i'm just nicely going to wait till 10 october, and buy it in the stores. I'll try FF out before TF2, because once I get my TF2, Portal and Episode 2, there will be no more time left for FF. :)

..and while I wait, I get to drool on lovely TF2 beta movies!

On other note, the 'Meet The Engineer' is out.
Personally, I thought this one was the weakest of the 3.
The Engineer is silly... but heh, I never really liked the Engineer. I wanna BOEM BOEM, not let some sentry BOEM BOEM for me. :P

Everything us serious TF players (conc jumping, etc.) has been put to waste for good.
Actually, back in the day, I was mean lean bunnyhopping rocketing kill machine. I practiced many days on learning to time my rockets, and I reached a point I could just enter a public server full o' nubs where I could totally dominate the server. Heck, I even did clan matches for tfc leagues. So I think I could claim myself a once 'serious' TFC player.

But I always thought TFC-ies class balancing was a bitch.
..and those grenades, well, I can live without.

I don't what a shitty-looking TFC clone like FF (Atleast, I GET THAT IMPRESSION) is.... I want something new and original, with TFC as base. TF2 seems just that.

I don't base entirely on facts, I base mostly on what i've seen. Because you know why? I can only base purely on facts when I've actually gotten to play the games.

TF2 (Team Fortress 2) and FF (Fortress Forever) are both getting really close to release, so I thought a thread about it would be nice. There is a thread about this, but it's 1 year old and I thought starting over would be better, now that we got to see more media and we all have new opinions.

I used to go for FF, but i'm going for TF2 now.
I like the comical pixar look, and it seems Valve actually worked on class balancing, which I think is a good thing, because I mean cmon... the pyro for example was worthless in TFC. Also, in TF2, you have no grenades (Atleast, that's what i've been hearing everywhere).
I think this is a good thing because I was really getting sick of not being able to exit my base in Dustbowl because of the grenade spam, to name something. TF2 looks like it'll be a unique experience and well... I want to fire sasha!!

I'll still try FF, but in my opinion, it seems like a TFC clone.
I really like TFC, but I don't want clone of it. Nothing has been done at class balancing in FF, and personally, FF looks way to HL2-ish. TFC used a lot of HL1 textures, but TFC always looked different from HL1.

Still, I can't wait to play them both.
