env_model works and the model shows in my map but it has no geometry and players can run through it.
env_model?
If it has no geometry, put it inside a clip brush. That way players can't get to it.

And Vassy, you should be able to use a cycler_sprite to display models. What does a cycler_weapon do anyways?

I just noticed that last night. And I saw the Residue Processing thing, and the first level is lit, its just lit brightly. There isn't much to cast shadows. This was most likely caused by carving and an invalid solid fix, another reason the Carve tool should be gone.

monster_generics bleed when hit, so don't use them unless it's for a scientist/barney/person in your level setup for scripted sequences. monster_furniture works for me, just pop it in valve/models and Hammer'll do the viewing for you. Oh, and make sure you have Hammer 3.5 and the HL Hammer 3.5 FGD. Older versions do not support model viewing.

Rileymo is correct, it screws up your brushes giving invalid solids and such. You could also use vertex manip to rotate complex brushes.

It is easy enough for beginners to Mapping/Modding to do their stuff in the Half-Life engine. Try doing it with Unreal...the editor takes hours upon hours of training and practice to be able to use efficiently, and has so much complexity, entities, and data that takes a full knowledge of the engine and editor to begin producing even simple rooms. Half-Life's editing engine makes it so that beginners can produce good maps while providing advanced options to experienced mappers. And as it was the game that defined the FPS genre and won so many GOTY awards, it's no wonder it has a huge and supportive community.

I was a custom map running some r_speed tests and when I went to paste a command, I forgot I had that "The G-Man is watching us, he's everywhere..." quote on the clipboard, and there, all of a sudden, instead of gl_wireframe 2, there was "The G-Man is watching us, he's everywhere..." and it scared the crap out of me until I realized I had copied it earlier. Hehehe.

Coplanar faces: A brush has a face which is split onto more than one. Hard to explain. Did you use vertex manipulation?
If I'm not mistaken, it comes from splitting a face but not doing anything with the extra vertices, "hence the coplanar plane".

Today there are more noobish kiddies playing CS than people who played/still play HL.
How true, Haz. Every game I go into these days looking for some decent players to play against, I get some camping AWPers or 12 year old admins who amx_slap me for no reason, and give unfair bonuses to his n00b friends who come in the game, then I get kicked for "hacking" when I can frag one of them through the constant slaps. That's not hacking, thats skills.

When you find a good game with mature players, however, its damn fun.

I think some better textures might also look better....I find those particular lab textures more lab-officy than lab-lab, if you get what I mean. I think maybe those green panels might look kind of cool, combined with some machinery on the walls, one or two of them removed for maintenance, with the equipment behind exposed, and definitely some darker lighting might do the trick, like maybe removing those fifties ceiling lights (Maybe the spores are sensitive to white light, so the room is lit dimly with that blue light from the little lights in front of the spores, or something). It needs more clutter (the perfect word I was looking for!), like more equipment, computers, trim, cables, machinery, useless gadgets that look like they do something important, decals, signs, valves, gearboxes, (lol), but add more! Detail in single-play is what captivates the player.

I'm gonna go with CP that a control room would be good. You could do some interesting architecture or texture(s) on it and make it stand out a little bit, that rail just doesn't really cut it. Alternatively, make that little platform a monitoring station for that vent that goes right into it and add some pipes, dials, vents, steam, ambient sounds....the possibilities are endless! I'm looking forward to seeing what will come out of this, the improvement over the original pics is excellent, and I want to see what you can do with your mapping skills.

Good luck!

in Internet Explorer and Internet question Post #37937
I have IE6 and have the recent Windows Updates and the latest IE update to my knowledge. I am the system admin, but when I go to change some options in IE it gives me an error; "This Operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on your computer. Please contact your SysAdmin." However, I can change them when I'm in this TWHL window. Ideas on why I can get it to work in one window and not the other?

Also, clicking download links doesn't show the DL window so I can't see the status. Anyone know how to force this window to show? (I can't save target on some links like on csnation and FilePlanet so that's not an option). I assume its somewhere in Options but I can't seem to find it.

You cannot create real horror in HL.
....It's possible using the engine, is it not? Create some custom animation sequences, make more monsters...Like the stuff being discussed in Jahzel's thread. I agree, the default Half-Life setup is a bit....lacking in the horror department, I was kind of referring to mods and anything with the engine in my post, but it didn't come across that way.
DOOM3, will be real horror, I'm really looking forward to play it.
Me too, especially since it's designed on NVidia cards. (still works on ATI, anyone who has one) Huzzay for the GeForce!

I bet he intends to scare us with super high r_speeds.
I was just about to say the same thing. I'm more scared of the mangling of the engine than what is done in it...THAT is something that'll keep me awake :zonked: .

Horror is managable if you are a master of scripted sequences and impressive entity setups. And I didn't find Hunger scary. Even with the lights off, headphones cranked up and playing at 11pm in only the light from my computer screen....but that's just me. I'm never really scared of anything in movies or games, although the Silent Hill series had its share of creepy moments.

The chicken is a monster_generic, if thats what you want, with the location of the model specified in the path field.
