We will be judging several aspects of the maps, from layout to originality, amount of detail, etc.
Who is We?
It seems like you copied this sentence from the instructions I wrote for compo14! ;)
I'm currently working in my entry for the Source compo, and when I'm finished, the official HL1 compo will probably be ready...

How exactly do they dissapear?
If the map is too big, some entities cease to be rendered. The error is something like "Too many entities in visible packet list"

Think of tubes that you're blown through at high speed instead of conveyor belts, or catapults instead of elevators.
Some very good mappers have done similar things in the past :)

Proof that a map can "feel open" with this layout. Of course, areas outside the red shape are inaccesible.

Cooling... interesting. I took out one of the default fans on my PC because it was too noisy. I decided not to put the covers back in place so heat escapes more easily. It's been a while since I did that, but it works just fine.
What is the highest % of CPU speed you could gain with cooling?

Sorry if people didnt like the compo theme. We already had a unique compo, which is what I would have suggested: "make a surreal map".
Since a lot people were into this "map a house" thing, I thought it would be a good idea, a map in which you would have to use old HL1 elements.
I guess everyone would have preferred a "Make the scientist die in the most awful way possible" compo, in which no real mapping skills would be needed. :

I'm not using steam for HL1, but I am using the 1.1.1.0 version
Minimum requirement is a .bsp file that works when run in the console of Half-Life v46 1.1.1.0
Can we do anything about it?

Are you sure the compile was completely succesful?

in argh feckin cubemaps! Post #128547
Even if there is a texture or compiling problem, you should be able to swim in that invisible water brush, and if you shoot at it, you should see splash sprites. If that doesnt happen, then there isnt water at all, and as BJ just said, all you have is a full nodraw brush which of course will not act like water... :quizzical:

in argh feckin cubemaps! Post #128521
Apart from what Rabid just pointed out,
-The map must have undergone a full compile
-If you have a DX9 card, water will work even without cubemaps.
-Certain water textures reflect, others just refract etc. dev_water3_exp should be reflective (expensive water)

keep trying and good luck!

*Potential Spoilers*

I quote myself
The first part was nice but the last half of the film was horrible.
Spielberg even had to copy the Velociraptor Kitchen Scene from his "Jurassic Park" film. Very dissapointing
The film begins nicely and there are some really good sequences. But from the moment they enter the basement and play hide and seek with those teletubbie-like creatures, It loses a lot. I dont care if the book has a well written end. The end of the film should work without having to read the book and it does not. It reminds me of parts of "Matrix Reloaded" that were absent in the film because they were included in the videogame "Enter The Matrix". Because of this, many people found the movie even more confusing that it was...

in Counting units? Post #127284
Actually, HL uses multiples of 8 when it comes to textures. If you stick to that, then you dont have to do things like using the FIT tool.
For example:
8 units is used in a lot of little trim textures
16 units is the normal height for a section of stair.
32 units is the height of railings
64 units is the normal size for crates
128 units is the height for walls...

Elon, after creating the minimod, compile the map again (with a new game configuration, of course) and check if everything works.
A wav file with a defined path of valve/sounds/ will not work if you have that file in mymod/sounds. Just move the sounds and change the paths.

Edit:same goes for models, etc

The suit in HL1 was a Mark IV, and in HL2 you can clearly hear "Mark V"
When he says "your suit" he is only speaking of it symbolically. Much like when Barney says "you left this at Black Mesa" referring to a crowbar.
Maybe G-man gave both the suit and crowbar to Kleiner & Co at the end of the game, and that's why you start HL2 without them. Strange, since we are talking about G-man, not Saru-man the wizard :zonked:

Decompiling is evil, since it allows users to obtain WAD files that are integrated into the BSP.
It's not a "moral" feauture of decompilers, but it helped me once to recover some WAD I had deleted (but was part of my map, of course)

we've got what... 3 types of combine and antlions
But we also had different species of headcrabs, lots of zombies (more "human" and way more fun to kill than the HL1 zombies). Striders were menacing, but Gargantua and Gonarch had a bigger horror factor to them. The only thing I miss in HL2 are boss battles like the 3 Tentacles, Pit Worm, etc.
Although If wanted big boss battles, Serious Sam would be the game to play.

Elon, if you are not going to make the map in minimod format, then you should at least place your files in existing folders, like:
valve/sound/ambience
valve/sprites/
valve/models etc. so everybody that tries your map doesnt need to create new folders. But making a minimod is quite easy. My compo entry was a minimod.

Use a full compile when you are done with the map. About the plant model, it would be much better if you made a minimod folder for all the custom content, so judges wont remember your entry by how many files they had to manually place in countless folders ;)

Be careful. Sometimes the compiling process runs out of RAM memory and tries to use the hard disk as a swap space, but never actually finishes. I had my computer compiling for more than a day and nothing happened.
To avoid this, make sure that your RAM memory is 1.5 times the visibility matrix that the compile process window tells you.
If your visibility matrix is 40, then you need 60 MB or RAM and so on. Not a problem if you have a good PC

in hl to hl2..... Post #125107
I cant imagine HL2 having the same graphics as HL1. You are complaining that it has better graphics so they get more money. Is there a secret pact between vALVE and Nvidia or ATI? I think that if HL2 was a game for lower spec computers (I've seen it run decently in low spec machines) it would be an insult for those people who have purchased a new computer with a good 3D card. One of the things I thought when playing the game was: "Hey! now I know what those shaders of my geforce4 were for! Those things had a purpose!!"
My computer is more than 3 years old (only upgrades have been a dvd recorder and a new hard drive) and the game runs fine will full effects. If you actually expect a five or six year old machine to run today's games at their full capacity, then my advice would be to stick to console gaming
;)
I might be the only one who thinks that way, but I prefer HL2 for some reasons like: we dont have either the boooring "On a rail" type chapter or an ugly and uninspiring xen world. Dont get me wrong, I like Black Mesa, but after Half-life, Opposing Force and Blue Shift, it did get kind of repetitive

I would say that strange things should be done if you already have the house done. After all, it's not a cave-in-cliff compo. If it's a part of the trip to the house it can be nice. Just remember that we wont run the map in fullbright mode, and nor will the administrator when he gets home. :quizzical:

What I meant by resources was money and people as well. If thousands of jobs of that type were created, the economy would surely suffer in another sector and like I said before, it probably wouldnt be worth it. :quizzical:
Anyway, the thought that our world could turn into some sort of City 17 or Matrix world is not possible unless:
-Aliens invade earth (in which case we have Dakota Faning to scare them off with her shrieks)
-Machines take control of earth (in which case the threat is minimal since they would run a Microsoft OS and crash)

We live in a world of human beings, which are known to fight (die if neccesary) to gain their goals of conquest, freedom, etc.

The whole idea of Big Brother, camera control 24 hours a day 7 days a week of each individual is never going to happen, mainly because it is not profitable. The amount of resources needed to exert this kind of activity surpasses what you could ever get in return.
10 years from now, Bush will not be in power (he really isnt in control of anything right now either, just a sort of puppet), and even if he was, his power for legislation wouldn't affect other countries without consensus.
