in Drawings? Post #96347
Drawing is one of the most important skills needed in architecture, so I have to draw even if I dont want to. Its true that I've disguised some HL screenshots and used them for some projects. :D
I draw as a hobby since I was 4. Of course, I also had my time of 3d drawing etc. Some examples

in HL2 texture problem Post #95824
I've read the Source material tutorial, and managed to make custom textures for HL2... However, I am having trouble giving my new textures custom properties. For example, I have a texture that should work on a conveyor, but the old way of naming the texture "scroll...." and using it on a func_conveyor doesnt work in Source
I've searched many websites but I cant find how to give that property to my texture :(

in doom 3 kind of graphics are creepy Post #95797
Doom3 graphics are okay, given the fact that most enviroments consist of cramped halls and rooms, where you can put lots of detail with less hit on performance.
HL2 graphics are simply beautiful. Even though they are less extravagant than Doom3, Unreal2 etc, lots of other things apart world geometry make the game good.
Far Cry is also astonishing in terms of beauty and freedom to move around, but the story hasnt caught my attention the way HL or HL2 did :)

They only carve if your func_wall consists of more than one brush and they are overlapping. If you make each brush a separate func_wall entity, there wont be any polygon splits

In HL2 you can create great looking maps effortlessly, in HL1, it requires much more skill to create an amazing map
Is that why I take 3 days to make a nice looking HL map and 30 days to make a nice looking HL2 map? I think it's the other way around

You are indeed right to be angry, I think most answers to your HL models question were too harsh. And you are right, HL can handle a huge amount of polygons, it's just a matter of what computer you are using.
But it is also true that the HL engine will have a much worse performance than Source using the same model. It's not only about physics and nice textures, a lot of things have been greatly improved.
On the r_speeds part, I think it's really not a question of how much does your computer lag with 1000 polys or 2000 polys. Computers today can handle very high polycounts, but not the same as 6 years ago. So when making a "Half-life map", I always make maps that will work with any computer that played the original game with decent performance. Presenting a map to the public that has potential problems in some computers isnt the perfect thing to do. There's ways to make nice brush work with control over r_speeds.
So 6 years after HL came out, we all want to make bigger maps, more r_speeds and put in more detailed models. And the logical way to do so is using the source engine, in my opinion :) I agree that we could do without STEAM, but source mapping is just as fun as normal HL mapping, both hammer editors start with an empty grid, and it's just a matter of filling it up. Slaves and Grunts are cool, but combine soldiers, cables and high res textures can be fun also! :D

Floor textures used in walls, beds that look like tombstones... I cant really give a full opinion until I see it and play it.
Just one thing, only after I saw water in a flooded bathroom in one of the screenshots, did I notice this map was for a Source Engine game.

you are right, and the invisible wings of the 757 actually did some invisible damage where they supposedly crashed... weird... :zonked:
The aluminum nose of the plane would break/vaporize before crashing through multiple sections of the solid pentagon building...
the dna structure of 97% of the passengers and crew wouldnt have survived the temperature they said was responsible for the vanishing of most metalic debris, and yet they have recovered it...
Maybe The Combine has something to do with all this :

I dont really think Bush has anything to do with a possible conspiracy plot, if something was done that day, it could've been ordered by someone else. I still remember something Rumsfeld said:
Here we're talking about plastic knives and using an American Airlines flight filled with our citizens, and the missile to damage this building and similar (inaudible) that damaged the World Trade Center
It could've been a metaphorical use of the word missile, or an unintentional revelation, we might never know...

No offence jazhel, but the crahs hole is big enough for a boeing
Firefighters destroyed a section of the wall because of the inminent danger of collapse. The hole you are talking about is not what the "craft" initially made
NORAD was likely ordered to stand down because they wouldn't shoot down a commercial plane just because it was hijacked
The normal procedure is to take off and escort the hijacked plane, not to shoot it. They did none of those 2 things
and your conspiracy stuff is written by a guy whom makes a life of it
Just one guy? not really... And the "official" version is also told by people who make a life of it ;)

Yeah, there are a lot of FPS out there that work well and dont need anything like STEAM... I kind of prefer the old update method (update it when you decide it's time to). And let's remember we're not always talking about updates, but mostly of fixes of bugs in the game(s) :(
My biggest complain is the amount of time hammer needs to open a map and load materials (more than 90% of which I dont need for my map...)

in Poll: Half-Life or Half-Life2? Post #93876
I think the problem is inside each person's head. Some people that played CS a lot, have ended up shooting their classmates in real life... could you blame that on the game?? no way
I've see a lot of videogames with female characters and I dont expect real women to climb high ledges and carry uzis like Lara Croft
HL2 doesnt need hot chicks in it because the game is good and aims towards a certain "realism". The counter-example would be the Dead or Alive series, that features
a bunch of slutty looking chicks
as one of the games main interests.
And remember, it's all about how people react. I dont think Aida from Unreal II was a 'hot chick'. She was just a pretty arrangement of pixels and vertices in a computer file :P

HL1 > HL2. HL2 is homosexual
HL1 had a vast majority of male characters (Gina from the training map holograms is in fact the only female character in the original HL1) so it should be the other way around :D

Whatever you did was because of your actions
Yeah, everything Freeman does is also because of your actions. He only shoots when I choose to shoot etc.. ;)
I think one of the best aspects of Half-life 1 & 2 is that there's a world in which you move, but it doesnt depend on you. This is opposed to games like Sonic or Tomb Raider, where the scenarios are taylor-made for the character you are using.
the verification issue makes it lose all of its glory
I bought HL2 2,328 hours ago, and the verification and downloads have taken at most 2 hours of that time. It was a painful installation procress but I forgot about it the first minute of gameplay :)

Is there a game where you can do something that hasnt been written??
I think that only happens in those role games you play with dice, not in videogames.
There's nothing wrong with the game being an interactive movie or being linear. Some games are linear (HL, Doom, RE), some games give you more freedom (Far Cry, GTA), others are based on being repetitive (strategy, sports) and they have to be valued for what they are.
Both HL games are great if not the very best of their kind, with HL2 being more interesting in terms of mapping due to the superior technology it uses.

but you never end up leaving the City17 area. HL1 took you around alot of places
mmm... I remember a town called Ravenholm, a coastline highway,a bridge, a seaside jail... I think Hl2 takes you around more places. But it is true that HL was more unpredictable, and it had more of a surprise factor (In hl2 you could sort of guess what was coming up next. Nothing painful like the StarWars Episode I film though :D )

Let's say HL1 was a great game in its days and same thing happens with HL2
The HL1 theme is a nice one, but we all now that if HL2 took place in cramped Black Mesa labs and halls, people would say the sequel is just a copy of the original with pretty graphics.
I think it's good to have an engine that works so much, much better with big outdoor scenarios than the original. And that's one of the things I like about Hl2, big maps and locations.
when it comes to mapping, I think Hl1 was friendlier if you wanted to make a map completely out of the game's theme (like most of my maps) and HL2 helps you decorate your work with all those props...
