I think 'punishment' in all its forms is a very human thing to do. That being said, as my religious teachers so often put it "God is above us humans". The only proper way of dealing with people who have done wrong in a humane, rather than human, fashion, would be rehabilitation and reform.
Well, here is the view from a religious standpoint: God does not want to you suffer in eternity, but would rather rehabilitate and reform you through Christ. However, God leaves you with the choice - and just like refusing a surgery that will save your life, there are consequences for your choice.

So did the kid get end up getting the surgery after all?
It's not hate, it's pity. I pity people who put their faith in the supernatural. It provides false hope to those are too weak to think for themselves. I can't deny that our knowledge of the universe isn't good enough to totally discount the existence of a "god", but the difference is, christians put blind faith into the existence of such a being without any consideration. It's purely delusional thinking.

Most christians try to justify their beliefs by telling you how it saves people from addictions or depression or other similar situations. The truth is, hope, no matter how false, is still very powerful - it's a placebo.
I do think for myself. But I'm not afraid to admit that I was too weak to change who I was. I was a mess. And somehow, giving my life over to something greater was the only thing that has produced such dramatic change in my life. Call it a placebo effect if you'd like but it's the only thing that has worked. I really can't justify what I say, but I can't deny it either. And believe me, I have gone through extensive consideration of what I believe. But believing in the existence of God does not indicate that anyone is delusional or feeble-minded. Albert Einstein, one of the most brilliant men to ever live, believed firmly in the existence of God. So please, no pity for me, I consciously made this choice, and my life is honestly far better as a result.

If she actually knew anything about her own faith she would know that Jesus had explicitly said: "Do not put the Lord your God to the test." (Matthew 4:7) So yes, she is outright foolish for blindly thinking that God would have healed her son when it can easily be done through normal medical means. Of course, if the surgery somehow went wrong (unlikely) then I say she is free to pray for healing - and I have seen some profound events where people should have died but ended up living - but that's no reason to refuse an appendectomy.

Oh yeah, Trapt you guys do have some pretty hardcore churches down there (e.g. Hillsong) but from what I've seen, none of them practice the same ignorant theology as this woman. Same way here. We have some pretty "fundamentalist" churches here, but none that I know of would recommend not having surgery for something that is certain to kill you otherwise. I think it just a handful of weird denominations that do this stuff. Like those churches that handle venomous snakes. We think they're weird here too.

The whole thing. The real dam I took this from has 16 floodgates, but I figured it was already big enough as it is, so I cut it down to 12.

I started this as a CS map originally, but it has since grown way too big to work (the round would be half over in the time it takes to get anywhere). So I'm thinking of putting it HL with the buggy and the fanboat to drive around with. I just gotta figure out a way to keep the textures.

Yeah, and when we decide to kill everyone, we just pull the nuclear reactor out of the coolant and let them all meltdown! Fallout 3 for everyone!!!
Of course, in modern plants, starving the reactor of coolant would simply result in the reactor being shut down due to the necessity of coolant to keep the reaction going. In other words, the water acts as a neutron moderator, and without controlling the neutrons, the fission reaction would simply cease.

We do need to conserve resources and become more efficient. That is beneficial both economically and environmentally. What we don't need is this stupid carbon caps/trading system that is nothing but more pointless government regulations and an economic disaster waiting to happen.

Plus, most so-called environmentally friendly solutions really aren't. For example, wind power is horribly expensive, destroys land and affects weather patters far more than CO2 does (large wind farms can reduce wind speeds by as much as 5-10MPH). It takes thousands of wind turbines to replace one coal plant. That's a lot of land destroyed. And it takes tens of thousands of wind turbines to replace a single nuclear plant. Despite the irrational fear of nuclear power, it actually has the least environmental impact of any form of power generation. And it is fairly cheap as well.

Also, hybrid cars won't do you any good. They won't save you any money once you figure in the higher price and the higher maintenance cost, such as replacing the battery pack. Not to mention mining the lithium for those batteries does far more environmental damage than the CO2 eliminated.

So the sooner everyone stops buying into this global warming scam, the sooner we can improve our economies by focusing on real problems and actually fix real environmental problems that we haven't even been paying attention to because of this warming scam.

in Earth Hour Post #264446
I wouldn't call it a crisis. Current "global warming" theories utilize very poor reasoning, with very little actual research to back it up.

1 - Human CO2 production is very insignificant compared to natural CO2 production, coming from volcanic activity and weathering of rock
2 - C02 is a very poor greenhouse gas. Studies show that CO2 could only warm the earth less than 1?C per doubling. And the atmospheric CO2 concentration has nowhere near doubled in the last century. Methane and water vapor absorb far more of the infrared spectrum.
3 - Current theories generally neglect negative feedback systems. For example, increasing global temperatures would evaporate more seawater, producing more cloud cover and thereby reflecting more infrared back into space, acting to stabilize temperatures.

Honestly, it's nothing more than utter disregard of the scientific method and a bunch of Chicken Little's running around screaming that the sky is falling. I will be making full utilization of my electrical devices and continue to drive my gas-guzzling vehicle. While conservation of resources is a good idea, scaring people into it is not the way to do it.

I have an enormous map that had the same problem, so I just set vis to fast and it compiles fine and runs with reasonable performance. Have to agree with m0p. I have a pair of 80 gig drives that are going on 4 years, and run pretty much 24/7. Still work without a hitch. By the time most SSD's are that old and see heavy use, they will see a much higher failure rate, or at least a significant degradation in performance.

Freeman can be a bit chubby. I think 48 units is the minimum a player can crawl through. In real life of course, a person of normal dimensions could squeeze though a lot smaller.

UAC is so annoying. Instead of actually programming in some decent kernel-level security, MS decided to make Vista ask you about every minute little thing you do. Like any typical computer-illiterate user is gonna know anything about what to allow and what not to.

Better yet, it should have a Stupid User option that warns people not to open that "hotcousin.jpg.exe" file they just downloaded from the random email that they don't even know who sent.

Even better, MS should block idiot network admins from disabling security updates. That alone would greatly reduce the effectiveness of botnets and viruses out there.

in Maps with broken links Post #261701
I noticed a lot of externally hosted maps have broken links. I was thinking that since we have cleaned up the top maps section, why not set up some way to deal with these maps. For example, have something like a "Lost Maps" section or a way to tag maps that have broken links. And that way, if someone happens to have a copy of one of the said maps and can provide hosting, they could restore the link to that map.

I'm not sure how feasible this would be, but it is disappointing to find what looks like a great map - only to find that the download link is broken.
