I played Dishonored for 3 hours straight, and really wanted to like it. The art style and character designs are brilliant, but the story and the world as a whole seems to be shallow. I also found the level design to be pretty counter-intuitive if you want to play stealthy.

Lot of the times, there's just no place to hide, even if you use the teleport thingy, and no chance to stealth-kill without being spotted by the two other blokes standing around in the same room. Butchering everyone after being spotted on the other hand is way too easy.

I liked the level design and stealth sections of Deus Ex HR much better, even if the story and characters pretty much sucked when compared to the previous titles in the series. Maybe Dishonored gets better a few more hours in, but I'm not really interested in playing it after the initial phase.

Taylor is simply my family name translated to English. It was one of my nicknames at late-night college Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament matches, along with Mr. Weaver and a ton of other retarded names we came up after a few beers. Taylor seemed more adaquate than say, Lady Pussy Juice Blues.

Previously, I was also known as Masta Killa, which I used at LAN parties in elementary school. At the age of 14, I thought it sounded cool and didn't bother to come up with something else for a few years to come.

@Blitz: Great ideas, thanks a lot! I've already had some flowers in the tree planters, but the texture sucked and altogether looked awful. Those are nice alternatives, I'll be sure to include them.

Freakazoid

One of my favourite shows to date. Insane randomness of parodying everything ever created, popculture references mixed with occasional clips from fifties horror movies. Too bad it got killed off quite early.

Combat is pretty unforgiving for the most part, I thought they had crap like the godlike grunts sorted out by the time of release.

On another note, Surface Tension as a whole makes up for all the God-awful gameplay. It's my favorite chapter so far, although I didn't finish Lambda Core yet.

They're absolute assholes. If you've got a convenient bunch of them and carry them in your pocket, they're heavy, pull your trousers down, and give the impression that you have a constant erection. Last time they've cut my foot when I dropped them. Good thing they can be used to unlock doors, or I'd go T1000 on their asses.

Xen definitely had its issues, but it was a perfect closure of the game. I can't recall an alien world this fleshed out and believable with the possible exception of Outcast. If the BMS team goes even further then Valve did, it's totally worth the wait. I'm curious what they'll come up with.

in Buying a laptop... Post #307131
Laptops with high-end mobile chips for 1000-1300 bucks? Yeah, no. For Skals' price range, a GTX 560 M is perfectly ok. Heck, it can be even considered as a higher-end chip in laptops. Besides, I think it's just dumb to invest in one of the most expensive laptops, because they're much more vulnerable to outside forces, overheating, etc. Except if you're darn rich, and a few thousand dollars doesn't set you back, it's just not worth it.

On a side note, mid-range cards aren't that crap, as they used to be, say, 5-10 years ago. A GTX 560 will run pretty much every recent game on high settings. If you absolutely NEED that 60-100 fps with 8x AA in highest resolution, then yeah, go with a high-end card. Other than such extreme cases, mid-range cards are the way to go.

The specs on that MSI are pretty awesome tbh, but check for common errors regarding that model. Those lower-end Chinese manufacturers are pretty accurate, when it comes to just-out-of-warranty-fuckups. If it's a relatively new model with no long-term experiences, well...better go with a more safer and similar Dell, HP, Sony or IBM.

in Buying a laptop... Post #307081
Laptop graphics aren't that bad, you just need to do some research regarding the mobile graphics chips, and choose according to your preferences. Take a look at the cards here:

http://notebookcheck.de (you can easily change the language to english in the upper right corner)

They have a pretty awesome benchmark-chart up there, and more in-depth specs for each chip.

Another important factor is the brand of the laptop, manufacturers like HP, Dell and Sony are pretty good, others tend to have some issues (my Toshiba's mobo died after three years, just outside of warranty time).

As Urby pointed out, overheating is a serious issue, but if your laptop's assembly doesn't suck, it's easy to keep it dust-clean with some compressed air.

And finally, check the interwebz for notorious errors regarding the models you've chosen, even the best manufacturers have product lines, which suck. If you're lucky, you can get quite a few years out of your laptop...but yeah, they have more problems, than desktops.

in Realistic Sword Game Post #307028
Back on topic, I'm a huge fan of Stephenson, and it became obvious even in Snow Crash, that he's not a dumbass in the art of sword fighting, especially if he has a team and extensive research behind his back for this project.

On the other hand, as much as I love his novels, he's still not a game designer, and motion controls still suck, if they don't have physical feedback. For example, I can't imagine how they'll integrate that sword A is heavier than the sword B (if it's supposed to be realistic), and how skill is going to count, if you're easily waving arond a light piece of plastic.

Although I'm a noob in Source mapping, I think you should use more props besides crates in the outside areas - like pipes and whatnot. Other than that - but I suppose it's the first draft of the map, so it'll obviously get better - some nice trimming always helps (where walls connect). This especially goes for the second screenie.

On another note, CS 1.6 map in progress: bombsite B done! R_speeds peaking at 1710 wpolies! Any ideas how to hintbrush this bitch? Suggestions about architecture / texturing / lighting? :)

Yeah, they were all a killing spree, but the backstory told through the graphic novels and his ever building inner tension of nothing to lose and losing everyone he cared for - even if clichéd - had a more convincing style.

Now, I haven't played the third one yet, so I'm not fully aware of the backstory, but it's seems to be "Grab a bottle of Scotch, and kill everyone - oh yeah, there's that chick, too".

Again, yeah they're all Payne to the Max games, but the presentation of the previous titles felt closer to my heart :)

Max Payne 3 looks like fun, although the full-on gore approach and macho attitude of Max puts me off of it for the time being. It's a possible character development from the previous games, but I still prefer the good ol' more subtle Max.

On antoher note, just finished Hard Reset. Was hard as balls even on easy difficulty. Loved the atmosphere though, it's as pure and beautifully vivid cyberpunk as it can get.

in Need simple maps for audio-only game Post #305801
C0a0 pwned me, took me 501 seconds to get through D:

As mentioned before, it definitely needs more work in the sound department. For me, the confusing thing was the beeping and humming, that was supposed to help in orientation. As far as I can tell, the more frequent beeping only kicked in when I was half-way through the level. Perhaps it could get more frequent earlier?

And I guess the elecrical wires so close to each other at the very end could get frustrating. I couldn't really differentiate when I'm directly facing them, and when I'm between them. Maybe that could be fixed, if there's an even number between the wires, and also between them and the surrounding wall. This way, the player can't be exactly in the middle of them - so you could hear the slight difference between the left and right audio channel. I hope you get what I mean :D

But anyway, I'll also try to throw a map together ;)

I didn't really have too much of a problem with my old ATi Radeon 9550, but that was ages ago. My last card was a rather special AMD HD 2600 Pro - because it was AGP - but hell, they couldn't produce a stable driver for the darn thing in five (!) years. Every new hotfix still had these weird, blue 16x16 pixel boxes appearing all over the screen, until it somehow "warmed up" in about 30 minutes, and started working properly - but even then, it still BSOD'd randomly.

Yes, AMD cards are a bit cheaper, and perform the same way nVidia cards do - if their friggin' driver lets them, that is. On the other hand, with nVidia: stable drivers, PhysX, CUDA. Nuff said.

Started watching Breaking Bad. With four episodes in, I still can't decide if it's generally brilliant, or an average show with a few brilliant moments.

Don't get it though how it even got nominated for its 'outstanding cinematography'...lighting and composition is as bland and handycam-shaky as it can get. But aside that, writing and directing is spot on IMHO.
