Maybe you should also change the hard drive to either a Seagate or a Western Digital. Could be my bad luck, but my Samsung drive just died on me after 2 and a half years >:(

Thanks for the help guys, I managed to solve it...by downgrading the driver of my wireless adapter (Atheros) to an older, Win Xp (!) version. Found it on a forum somewhere after trying all Win7 / Vista drivers and fiddling around with the wireless options. Now that makes sense.

Thank-you, Microsoft. :/

in Windows 7 Wireless Problems Post #281505
To all you Win7 users out there:

Why is it, that when I install Win7, activate, everything seems to be in order, etc. the wireless connection doesn't work? The OS tells me, that the connection's established, but it's unstable. Every 5-10 minutes or so, the connection just "drops out" and after a minute, everything's back to normal. Meanwhile, there's no connection error message, windows tells me, that everything works perfectly. My rommies don't have any problems with the wireless connection, and this happens with every wireless network (happens with the wireless network at the Uni).

Any ideas? D:

It's nice and tidy, but it still looks somehow...cheap. This is only my point of view, but with a darker background color it may look more professional. If your sticking with this color, I think you should have a like 1 or 2px border for the whole site - like 5 px from the browser window - or as Grim said, surround the content (below the menu) with a white background.

The site is really cool, you just need to make every fraction of it stand out.

in Favorite Band? Post #279830
For me, I guess favorite bands would be more appropiate, since there are quite a few bands / genres that I like. Right now, I'm pretty much hooked on Irish / Celtic sounds, like Dropkick Murphys, or their Hungarian equivalents Paddy and the Rats and Firkin.

Other than that, the other bands that would definitely make it in my top 10 are:
  • Crystal Method
  • Led Zeppelin
  • ZZ Top
  • Mark Knopfler
  • The Doors
  • Pearl Jam
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Rage Against The Machine
  • Audioslave
  • Dub Pistols
...and loads of others I can't recall atm.

Actually, nowadays it's pretty narrow-minded to say that a laptop is crap for gaming. For example I have a pretty budget Toshiba laptop (I bought it for like ~800 USD two years ago) and it still runs newer games. The main problem is, that manufacturers see a bucket of money instead of people, that are willing to purchase a laptop.

The main specs are always "CORE2 QUAD 8000 GIGAHURTZ 8 GB RAM 1 TB HARD DRIVE OMG", but mostly forget to mention the graphics chip. But there are indeed deals, that can compete with desktop rigs. Sure, they're not upgradeable, but can serve you for 'round 2-3 years, if you're lucky. You just need to keep your eyes open, and look at the specs. Especially if your goal is to run like Source apps, you can get a laptop for 800 USD, and can use it for future games as well.

The laptop I have is a Toshiba Satellite A200-1S9, which - as I already mentioned - cost me ~800 USD two years ago, and serves me perfectly fine. It has a cheap Core 2 Duo processor and a fairly decent Ati Radeon HD 2600 graphics chip, and even in the worst case, I can run newer games - like say Borderlands or Mass Effect 2 - on high settings at 1024x600 with playable framerates. Yeah, it's not the highest resolution, but since the highest resolution is 1280x800, it's not a huge sacrifice.

Yeah, if you want to run everything on max resolution, with 8x AA and 16x AF, you should get a desktop, or a lappy for 'round 1500 USD. But if you just want something, that can handle everything with a minimal compromise and needs to be portable, hell, go with a laptop. Just keep your eyes peeled.

The graphics chip in that lappy is balls, you don't want to have an Intel graphics chip, if you're wanting to do something other than office work. Source could run on it if you're lucky, but I wouldn't count on it. Even if it works, the frame rates would be pretty low.

This site http://www.notebookcheck.com/Mobile-Grafikkarten-Benchmarkliste.735.0.html is a big help, if you want to compare graphics chips. You'll be probably be looking for some chip around #110 and up on this list, for example the Mobility Radeon HD 4570 would be a good pick, especially since it's fairly popular in laptops these days. Something similar from Nvidia should also do the job, just forget Intel ;)

in Do I need anything else? (hardware) Post #274993
For the GTX 260, you'll need a new motherboard, that's for sure, it's a PCI-Express card. However you don't "need" the GTX 260, you can go with something much cheaper - which I've listed before.

It's your choice, what you'll do. As I've told you, I don't know about prices in your country. Take a look at the prices of these components, check your pocket, and if it fits your budget, go for it. This setup should serve you well for 1, maybe 2 years. If you want something more beefy, that lasts longer without upgrading, save up.

in Do I need anything else? (hardware) Post #274990
You're going to need a new motherboard first. That motherboard you've mentioned comes with the old AGP-slot, but you're gonna need a PCI-Express card, if you want any good. Besides, you can barely get you're hands on AGP cards these days, and if even so, they're much too slow for their price.

So, you'll need a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and graphics card. As Huntey suggested, you should definitely go with a Dual Core Processor, but in my opinion, even a stronger Intel Dual Core (like say 2,5 Ghz) is going to be enough, they're even cheaper, than Core 2 Duos, but aren't that much slower.

For RAM - you've already heard the man, 2 GB DDR2, go.

Graphics card: anything from Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT and up, and in the case of ATi cards, something like the Radeon 4850 or 4870 should be more than enough. I don't know about prices in your country, but if it fits your budget, you can also try going with the GeForce 260 GTX. But you'll also need a new mobo, so that might tighten your budget.

For the mobo, I can't really say models, just choose something, that supports DDR2 memory, multi-core processors and has a PCI-Express slot. Shouldn't be more, than a hundred bucks.

That's all you need.

Moar Nine Inch Nails info from a fanboy:

I would recommend the albums "The Fragile", as Elof already mentioned "With Teeth" and "The Slip" (the last one is free for download from NINs official website, btw).

The earlier albums, such as "Broken" and "The Downward Spiral" are more angstier records, I guess you wouldn't like them, if you find even Black Sabbath "aggressive".

Wow Elof, nice list. It kinda made me want to come up with a list as well, so here it is, shamelessly ripping off its structure :P

Big Beat

The Crystal Method (one of my all-time favorites, the albums "Vegas", "Tweekend" and "Legion Of Boom" are all a must-hear)
Dub Pistols (primarily the albums "Point Blank" and "Six Million Ways To Live")
Overseer (only a one-album wonder with "Wreckage" but still good stuff)
Fluke (actually it's more Electronic, than Big Beat, but what the hell - the albums "Risotto", "Puppy" and maybe "Oto" are the best, imo)

Chillout/ambient

The Future Sound Of London ("My Kingdom" and "Cascade" are my favs, but there's loads of others to choose from)

Misc

Juno Reactor (a mix between Electronic, Goa and sometimes Classical music. Some tracks are shite, but the albums "Bible Of Dreams", "Shango" and "Labyrinth" are pretty much win)

I guess that's about all I recall atm.
