What lenses do you have Strider?
Standard 18-55mm lense, f/3.5 - 5.6. I use a polariser filter too, I think it makes a world of difference with outdoor shots. Can't afford a nice new lense right now. ;P
The most important part is that you get the raw light data straight from the sensor, which you can later post-process to retrieve more detail in the image than the camera can generate for a JPEG.
This is exactly why I work with RAW. If I find places I think are too washed out, or overbright, I can usually tone them down just enough without losing much quality.

I"ve got a fair few pics I forgot to switch to RAW for and when looking at them later on the PC, it's kind of ruined them.

EDIT:
Damn, Caboose, you've been busy. Some amazing stuff in there. I love what you've done with the colours, I've always wanted to try working with really minimal colours, but I never like my results.

I assume he's using func_dustmotes, since you can't override what material it uses for the motes.

If he created his own custom particles, using a different texture, it would do the trick, though it wouldn't be as easy to get them into suitable shapes I guess.

EDIT:
Wait, here you go. Some guy had the same problem in L4D, should be the same in L4D2.

That cat pic of yours, (c)Striker, has really nice colours. The stick and the two pole things in the background are somewhat distracting, though. But you can't really control where a cat's going to go, can you.

And I like this one of yours, DiscoStu:

There's also a command (which I forget) to turn off the auto-reload. Another plus for me.

If you're still having trouble getting particles into your map, I can help.

Add the name of the particle (the .pcf file name, not the particle name in the editor) to the particles manifest (particles/particles_manifest.txt). You can mount all your particles in one .pcf file, this way, if you choose to.

Use an info_particle_system in the map, but this time, use the name you gave it in the editor. Don't include the directory, or .pcf extension here, as it's only looking for particles already mounted in the manifest. And then, obviously, set it to start on/trigger it.

It's a cool little app, but it definitely shouldn't be used as a replacement for a modelling package. I think it's UV mapping is pretty inefficient. Not to mention anything built in Hammer isn't going to look nearly as nice as a properly modelled... prop.

It's handy for large bits of geometry though (things like complex trims, supports etc.). Func_lod doesn't quite cut it. Also handy for any dynamic parts of your map, where pre-compiled lighting is going to look icky as stuff moves around.

I watched the portal demo on e3 and I pretty much saw all the effects I saw in the trailer.
I've seen them too, twice in 720p. There are no dynamic rays, no DOF, and you can bet no console is going to be using such a scale of supersampling at a playable rate. This isn't a bad thing as most console games don't have those anyway.

This is just no different than what Valve have done with their other game videos, that's all.

Yeah, but the model is static, and faked through layers. The kind used in their videos is a fully dynamic (deforming/shadowing) effect, definitely not a model.

Oops. It was. ;(
Crepuscular rays?
'God' rays. This sort of thing. You can see them in use in the L4D intro videos, too, along with a heap of supersampling and depth of field effects.

Point is, that teaser was the same sort of movie magic Valve has used many times before. Portal 2 is looking great, regardless.
Nintendo totally stole the show for me, with their keynote. It was the only conference that was all about the games, and had an impressive line-up to show. They also win points because they didn't have a dorky nerd on-stage dancing to a crappy motion peripheral.

in E3 2010 Post #281906
The video was all mostly realtime. Check my Portal 2 videos thread. it looks like Source uses completely dynamic lighting in Portal 2, or at least dynamic sky light. You can see shadows cast by leaves and such move around in parts of the videos.
That's all looks like an upgraded version of the projected lighting the flashlight uses in Ep3/L4D/L4D2. It's nothing new for Source, except obviously being optimised enough for widescale use.

The engine is definitely nicer, but the teaser was clearly not realtime. It's rendered through their filmmaker with many effects you probably won't see in-game. Crepuscular rays, for one. They've been doing these since TF2.

These are all incredibly fake.

The lighting is far too natural in the first one and you can see a heap of photography artifacts. The second one is a joke, and just a terrible photo to boot. The next two have been around for a long time and are built from concept art. The fifth is clearly another poorly taken photo.

When you think about the way games are rendered, you can easily tell how fake these are. That or they're using AA/AF/AO more advanced than anything else in existence. DirectX 11 isn't that good.

ZombieLoffe's had me fooled for a second.

A whole heap of crappy rumours have popped up recently. E3 is sending people into frenzies, I think.

I'm pretty confident "Source 2" is a long way off, and when it does come it'll be a slightly beefed up Source anyway. Valve tell us their engine is totally modular and able to keep up with modern tech, but there isn't a whole lot of proof there, honestly. I'd love Valve to prove me wrong this E3, though.

Whatever their E3 surprise is, it's Portal 2 related, and apparently of little interest to console users. Kinda narrows it down to something SDK related, a PC demonstration, or something totally boring now that they've delayed it.
