K. Compo 9 Results:The low number of entries for this minicompo was more than made up for by the astonishing quality of the entries recieved!
The attention to detail in general was far beyond what I expected in some areas, and less than adequete in others. In terms of Brushwork, all entries are superb: beautifully-stunning work, intricate, creatively interesting, and cleanly done.
Both maps were intereactive to varying degrees but for the most part I was impressed--though I was surprised nobody made a trap of an oven or fridge or sink, which was just begging to be done imo.
Texturing and lighting varied in both maps form adequate to better, but for the most part I was pleased with it all.
Where both maps could have really improved would be in terms of small props. There were about 1000 possiblilities for easy-to-make, funny props like: silverware, cups, all kinds of food, a myriad of appliances, and lots of other things--all worldbrushed of course. Oh well, whatevs!
Some small letdowns in all entries were the use of that goddamn morning desert sky and an utter lack of sounds--not including some standard button/door sounds, which were ok in and of themselves. Both of these small aspects while not directly relating to the compo would have improved the maps considerably, while not taking up too much development time.
Spectre by
aThe spectacular brushwork, creativity, and attention to detail of this last-minute entry shocked me, frankly. The fridge itself in this would have probably won the fridge prop compo way back, not to mention the other nice props and great utilization of glass.
A well-deserved first place! Kudos!
Kitchen - by Tetsu0This entry blew me away when I first saw it too. The intricacy of the cabinets and overall elegance of design of this kitchen is unmatched. However, as we all know, hard work can wear you down, and Tetsu0 left this beautiful map almost completely devoid of small props, which would ultimately take it out of the running for gold.
Tetsu0's entry also sported the nicest use of textures and the most cohesive interactivity with drawers and cabinets--there opening/closing were timed perfectly, and easy to use. They wern't perfect however, and more things could have been interactive like the sink and fridge, but whatevs... Another superb entry!
Unnamed- by CabooseThe Bronze is awarded posthumously to Caboose.
Seriously, though unfinished and unsubmitted, in a moment of weakness I decided to give caboose the bronze for the excellent looking screens he sumbitted here in the thread. When I first looked at his screens, I thought the map was for Source! Needless to say, it's worthy of a medal imo.
@Caboose: Please upload your BSP/RMF to the Map Vault, and link to it in here, to make your "posthumous" award official!

a: I'll leave it to you if you want to run the next compo. If you do, PM me the details!
Btw, since you don't have this in the Map Vault yet,
here'smy full review of your map. (you can probably fit it in the map vault anyway by removing the minimod format, and wadicluding any textures that aren't stock HL. We can help you with that if you need it!

If
a declines, I'll facilitate compo 10.
Again, great work guys and thanks for participating!
