Just get wally.
Take some pictures, make them divisible by 16, and put them into a wad. its not too dificult.
If you has paint shop pro or photoshop it'd be MUCH easier.

Extremely sexy!

I wouldn't worry about wpolys for a map like this, considering the intent is not to make a good-performance multiplayer map. (Though of course, always keeping the wpolies as low as possible is good for many reasons)

So go nuts! If I were entering this, I'm sure my map would be in the 3000s! :)

Looks like Tetsu0's gonna go unchallenged.

We started out from entries from you and Tetsu0 and at least 2 other people said they were in, but alas, still no entries submitted :)

Whatevs!.. maybe in another life more people will actively participate in the minicompos! :P

Lol. No promises.
I just want this competetion to actually happen.
Can we change the entry rules... to like...

First 5 entries, or 3 weeks after the first entry has been submitted??

I think that's reasonable because it doesnt even loook like there's 5 people interested.

Goddamn it even looks sexy even in just wireframe!

I've thought about this problem too, but unfortunately, I have to stick to my guns on the terms of the compo.

If we can't get at the very least 5 people to participate, then it's my opinion there is not enough interest to keep this type of compo going, and it will die.

If that turns out to be the case, I still plan on having minicompos, but they will focus on general mapping practices rather than jsut complex brushwork. In the end, this is probably more benefical for everyone, albeit not as much fun imo :P

I understand the way you feel, but keep in mind why we do these compos, not for the token awards but to learn and above-all have fun! :P

I have a proposition regarding this. I'm planning on starting new minicompos on general mapping. At the time of the first general-mapping minicompo, I'll judge and remit awards to any entries we get--even if yours is the only one, but hopefully Caboose will get his in soon too.

ZombieLoffe: I see no reason why we can't keep the same layout--and even the title--for the new minicompos, that's assuming you've had time to keep working on it. Any Updates?

Fair enough?

Maybe looking at Tetsu0's map will inspire you to finish? (It is quite good)

Whatevs though, I know waht it feels like not wanting to finish projects. Probably 85% of everything I start never gets finished :(

If you can find some inspiration tho, please do submit yours! (unfinished even!)

Same goes for the rest of you bitches that said you'd be in this one!

I think that even if these things never get enough entries, they sure do force people to churn out really great stuff in a short amount of time. Two of my best maps would have never been made had it not been for the minicompos!

Yeah thats true.
The worst thing is tho im in florida right now, and my house is in connecticut. So its all based off memory.

Maybe if i get bored (probably will) ill throw in some detail to the appliances.
Btw those glass cabinets took me a good hour to troubleshoot.

Yeah, we sure have had some great submissions :)

Ideas to get more entrants:

-Give money/Prizes lawl :)
-Create multiple spam accounts to make them look more funner--and hence get more real guys to enter. ;)
-Maybe Advert on other mapping sites--I don't go to any others than TWHL, but I've heard other mapping forums exist? :)
Btw those glass cabinets took me a good hour to troubleshoot.
I have no doubt they did, being they're seperate doors and diffent sizes! You could also make the cabinet doors one func_door_rotating, and make the glass a {texture of some sort instead--transparent. It prolly wouldn't look as good, but would be easier :)

I always have trouble figuring the optimum place to put the origin for those rotating doors too.

I want to make a kitchen now!!1 :P
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-19 15:03:15 UTC Post #209973
All i did was make the wood a seperate door, and the 4 glass panels, one, yet seperate door.

I gave them the same entity position, named them the same. Same flags, rotation speed.. delay... render properties for glass was different (duh)
and i stuck a func_button which triggers both doors at the same time near the opening.

Set the delay, no move.. done.

Yeah, thats HL1. ^^
God... finished the FSS and RSS yesterday, but it isn't very acurate. Because the real towers have pipes, floors, steel bars and what not all over the place. Its really hard to map all that... so, the towers may look a little boring. The Shuttle itself is pretty detailed and acurate.

Whats left to do:
  • Use Spirit to make an as-close-as-the-real-thing launch sequence. Its gonna be tough...

I've decided, yet again, to try to keep the brushwork minicompos going, with some new small changes, rather than changing to general mapping ones.

Rule changes:

-The compo will still end when at least 5 entries are recieved, but they'll too end after a predetermined amount of time--say something between 1 and 2 weeks. (I guess only one rule change lol.)

Also, I plan on making the subsequent compos even more specific and simpler, so if you wanted, you coulld generate a nice entry in a matter of a few hours--rather than a few days. The good side of this, is that it will make it easier for people with time restraints to enter. The bad news is, it will kinda reduce these mini contests to prefab/prop rather than mapping compos.

Your thoughts?

If you have an entry for the current compo--caboose--, I suggest you submit it now if you are ever going to... I'm closing this one in a day or so, and starting compo 10 ;)

I have a simple prefab compo set up for #10; that is of course, unless the winner of the kitchen compo has a decent idea and wants to run the next one.

My map is done: its being uploaded as I speak (type) onto Badongo: I had a problem compressing it, eg, I couldnt compress it as much as I had planned on: I was limited to halfing the file size, anyhoo: ill get to the point

Ill post the link to the map as soon as Ive uploaded it: I appologise for my lacking of hosting it on TWHL

Next compo however; Ill make sure to A) fix the file size which in turn permits B) hosting it on TWHL

Thankyou for your patience

K. Compo 9 Results:

The low number of entries for this minicompo was more than made up for by the astonishing quality of the entries recieved!

The attention to detail in general was far beyond what I expected in some areas, and less than adequete in others. In terms of Brushwork, all entries are superb: beautifully-stunning work, intricate, creatively interesting, and cleanly done.

Both maps were intereactive to varying degrees but for the most part I was impressed--though I was surprised nobody made a trap of an oven or fridge or sink, which was just begging to be done imo.

Texturing and lighting varied in both maps form adequate to better, but for the most part I was pleased with it all.

Where both maps could have really improved would be in terms of small props. There were about 1000 possiblilities for easy-to-make, funny props like: silverware, cups, all kinds of food, a myriad of appliances, and lots of other things--all worldbrushed of course. Oh well, whatevs! :P

Some small letdowns in all entries were the use of that goddamn morning desert sky and an utter lack of sounds--not including some standard button/door sounds, which were ok in and of themselves. Both of these small aspects while not directly relating to the compo would have improved the maps considerably, while not taking up too much development time.

The spectacular brushwork, creativity, and attention to detail of this last-minute entry shocked me, frankly. The fridge itself in this would have probably won the fridge prop compo way back, not to mention the other nice props and great utilization of glass.

A well-deserved first place! Kudos! :)

Kitchen - by Tetsu0

This entry blew me away when I first saw it too. The intricacy of the cabinets and overall elegance of design of this kitchen is unmatched. However, as we all know, hard work can wear you down, and Tetsu0 left this beautiful map almost completely devoid of small props, which would ultimately take it out of the running for gold.

Tetsu0's entry also sported the nicest use of textures and the most cohesive interactivity with drawers and cabinets--there opening/closing were timed perfectly, and easy to use. They wern't perfect however, and more things could have been interactive like the sink and fridge, but whatevs... Another superb entry!

Unnamed- by Caboose

The Bronze is awarded posthumously to Caboose. :P

Seriously, though unfinished and unsubmitted, in a moment of weakness I decided to give caboose the bronze for the excellent looking screens he sumbitted here in the thread. When I first looked at his screens, I thought the map was for Source! Needless to say, it's worthy of a medal imo.

@Caboose: Please upload your BSP/RMF to the Map Vault, and link to it in here, to make your "posthumous" award official! :)

@a: I'll leave it to you if you want to run the next compo. If you do, PM me the details!

Btw, since you don't have this in the Map Vault yet, here'smy full review of your map. (you can probably fit it in the map vault anyway by removing the minimod format, and wadicluding any textures that aren't stock HL. We can help you with that if you need it! :) )

If a declines, I'll facilitate compo 10.

Again, great work guys and thanks for participating!

Rim: If you're listening, could you possibly design a special contributor award in the spirit of your other ones? Keep in mind they are going to be scaled pretty small: around 100x100.
